thanks redhybrid,

since day one no maintenance/modify that I make. Just normal checking. Will do full service went it reached 5000km usage.

no one update on this thread? here new symptom to share. "wingg....' sound comeout during parking (engine stop) without I push the alarm button. This happen occasionally (3-4 time a week). and sometimes it will trigger the alarms. Any idea?

no news means good news!! been quite about a month now!

all SMGs still rocking? dating ballerina? =.=

how are you guys!?

Hello masters and sifus,

I just owned an e46 SMG 325. Appreciate your guidance so that I can better enjoy my new ride.

I had an Alfa 147 Selespeed and I daresay the BMW 'selespeed' is different from an Alfa. :)

Cheers!

for the better or the worse?

Hard to say, I need a bigger car as the Alfa 147 is just too small..can even fit a golf set in the boot. You cannot carry more than one passenger comfortably.

But the transmission of SMG and Selespeed is different in more ways than I can imagine. I can simplify it in the following:
1. SMG 'knocks' softer and engages the gear a wee bit faster but Selespeed revs harder;
2. I don't know about the maintenance of the SMG yet but the Selespeed is tough. Those who says its a bit 'manja' clearly never owned one or owned an already defective one. You can whack it but remember it needs monitoring of the oil. In SMG i think (correct me if I am wrong) it uses a normal ATF oil. I don't know if it will ever run out of ATF oil like an Alfa.
3. The gear changes is different. I am still adjusting with the push up for + and push down for -.

Had a new symptom just about an hour ago. Gear not shifting down on slowing. Stuck at 4 when stopping. Gearbox logo appear, has to completely turn off, and turn back on. And it was ok. Happen again at another toll both..from 5, manage to go down until 3 but normally it goes down until 2. Accelerating give a beeb sound and C mode dissappear. Shifting up or down manually didnt do anything and after a while it was ok. Shift up..went to C mode..another toll both passed.

But at home parking lot there goes again beep sound. R doesnt want to engage and gearbox symbol appeared. Switching off and back on, it works again.

Anyone experienced this before? Im thinking its time for a pump...because for a past few weeks, the bzzzzzz sound when unlocking the car were a bit weaker than usual. And was browse around e46fanatics... That pump will cost $4000, usd. And what worse is that most of them changed the pump at 100k miles, just about my mileage...

Going to visit bomin tomorrow to see whats going on underneath. Pump or pentosin was escaped from the system due to leak.

Getting scary now...sighhh

Asyraq,

For smg, dont have to worry much about the ATF. Put more attention to the clutch actuator. Its the weakest component in smg that leak prone. When it does, browse through the forum again for a cheap solution of it.

gear shift problem sounds like a pump actuator issue, go to BM World and change the pump actuator seal bro, i hope the actuator still works fine. if it is just the seal, it will probably cost you around rm700 - rm800. also get ah wai to check your clutch. i changed both a few months back, sakit poket but all work just fine after that.

Afazlee,

Changed the hydraulic pump at bomin the next day. It seems the case but i was reluctant at first. I want him to change the relay for hydraulic pump because gt1 says its not active. Zero pressure indicated. And next, just for the sake of argument, he runs the bleed procedure - failed. Teaching in procedure also failed since there was no pressure accumulated. The pentosin level looks ok though. And i agreed to go for a new hydraulic pump. Got a smiley face once the old relay plugged in- whinning sound came back!!!!!!! I got back the pressure.

Anyway, i have done the clutch actuator seals change out at ah wai place october last year. It was leaking badly enough that the clutch plate went south too. Maybe because it soaked with pentosin. So new clutch with a repaired clutch actuator. Going to visit ah wai again to check on the actuator. Visible leak appear underneath now. Heard there is a new place at sunway that has the competence to do the same. Its just that they dont keep stock for the seal kit.

its quiet....everybody good?

Have read through all post to my not so new problem that i thought would be normal for SMG which i guess not suppose.

I have exeperince (always) when it is bad traffic that only 1st and 2nd gears come into play, it will be ok for 10-15 minutes...no jerking. going longer than that, jerk will be bad...very bad until a very light throttle it will act like the clutch is fully released (as if in manual car).

Noticed it will be ok again once i stopped for 15 minutes - engine off. door lock. unlocked (whine sounds came). starting the car, engaging gears. everything fine, no jerk.

I did some thinking of what maybe the problems:-

1.leaking clutch actuator - maybe but if it is leak through that, there will always be jerking, since the clutch cannot hold position when it was told to do so by SMG ECU - so clutch actuator is out of equation. I have changed the seal of it july last year.

2. observed some leaks at bell housing+engine assembly - but no...since i was last checked the pentosin level - in the interval of 2 weeks, level is not even decrease.

3. temperature - this maybe it. when its going hot, the performance of the seal for actuator is compromised and actuator could not hold position. but 7 days a week driving that car, pentosin level is ok, no...out of equation again ..... OR......

4. when it gets HOT, hydraulic motor pump is not activating/cut off??? of course when regulating position of actuator, pressure inside the accumulator will eventually fall below the threshold (30 bar if i am not mistaken), that it will ask for more pressure and motor is whining, imagine that once we engage gear, pressure will push the actuator to engage clutch...once throttle on, it will release pressure slowly until it completely release but in bad traffic, there will be a lot of pressure bleeding out and the hydraulic pump will be busy until its getting HOT and cut off and it uses whatever pressure it has left inside the accumulator. if it that is the case, i guess everybody is facing the same problem.

Please share your thought as well.

Thanks
