I took delivery of my E60 525i in March 2006.
As of this March 2009, she will be 3 years old. Her mileage now is 120,000kms.
I am here to personally tell you that CKD isnt necessarily any worst off than CBU cars.
My E60 525i is a CKD and my elder broinlaw's E60 530i is a CBU. You dont even want to begin to wonder how much problems the CBU 530 as opposed to my CKD 525i not mentioning my high mileage.
My CKD is solidly built and to this day, has had no major problems or nothing i thought was not fair for the manufacturer etc. Everything that has happened so far, i thought has been very fair given the mileage and the frequency of its occurence.
My only complaint is that i have to top up engine oil every 5000 - 8000kms but the thing is my friend who bought the EXACT same car at the EXACT same time from the same dealership also has to top up every 5000 - 8000kms. Led me to believe that this is possibly a common occurence with these new engines.
Honestly, these oils cost around RM60+ previously but now around RM90+ from Auto Bavaria or any dealership. I just buy 5 and make sure theres 1 sitting in my boot at any given time. If it pops up as engine oil low, ill just top it up the next time im filling gas. Not very hard. I dont really think RM90+ every 5000 - 8000kms would be painful for someone who bought a RM300 - 400k car.
Nonetheless, my Audi B7 A4 2.0tFSI also drinks engine oil right about this rate if im not mistaken?
All in all, i think that the CKD cars are actually built very well. I have no complaints at all and i have seen FIRST HAND experience where a CBU car had way more problems and had built quality issues on the inside (rattles, loose panels etc) as opposed to my CKD car.
Not to mention i'm riding on 20' rims with H&R sport springs and he's not.
Safe to say the CBU guy is now sold and i heard the new owner just replaced the transmission a month ago at a good 20K i think? My CKD baby is still holding up very well at 120,000kms driving like the day i bought her which is around 45k - 50k kms a year.
I hope you guys get your engine swaps sorted out though. I would really not want any local AB technicians reassembling my engine changing piston rings and such.
Just my humble 2c.
