whoa there dude.... I was merely pointing out a web site that will give you some ideas.... Im not an e36 driver myself so I cannot comment.

On things like that you have to ask mr lee himself although I suspect he will advise ori or stock pads changed at regular intervals is good enough for most purposes :)

However I have heard of dicussions on this topic which suggest Ferodo ds2500s as being good as well as the EBCs .... there will be some trade off in terms of feel and noise but feedback to be fair has been inconsistent or insufficient due to the high cost of these things.... some think they are good while some dont think so....

Funnily enough this makes good quality stock/ori stuff the better prospect given the price/performance balance they provide.

Thanks for the info Lee.. Is the Voltage Stabiliser something like the Pivot Raizin device? Looks kind of interesting with those red lights... Or is there any other brand that u would recommend?

Zee77,

I am using Pivot Raizin blue and red.

I've got 3 blue in the boot next to the battery and 1 red under the dashboard next to the ignition key.

I've not tried other brands, so can't comment.

Note - watch out for fake Raizins.

Hi 8080pbmw,

My response in blue.

[Hi Lee36328,
I am some sort of a car nut myself. If financially possible , I wouldn't have sold all my previous cars ( even the protons ) . Sometimes, I even wonder where are they now and how's their condition. I remembered telling the used car dealer that i hope he finds a good owner for my putra when i hand over the keys to him. He gave this kind of face that like I'm some idiot can not let go of his car.
Ha ha ha! I feel you dude.

Present ride have been with me for approx. 4 years now. With the amount of TLC and time spent on my ride , the present market value does not make sense nor justice to sell it.
The main reason mostly is the TLC spent makes the car very nice to drive and no car in the present market value can ever come close. Word.

Maintenance cost aren't very high as only regular service based on manufacturer's recommedation. Only fully synthetic engine oil until now.
Have already the Ori ///M body kits with replica GTR rear spoiler , Bilstein Yellow + Eibach Pro-Kit springs (good choice), Front Strut bar ( from Fabian )and other stuffs like HID , angel eyes head lamp..etc.
But I believe there are still many other upgrades to make it "perfect".
My ride is 8years+ . Chassis strength will be my priority , (I agree) so forming has been on my list since reading your feedback sometime back. but Desmond can only do it at his shop and will only come up to Penang with a min. 4 or 5 cars for him. (The last I checked, Penang is only 2.5 hours away, so...) So that didn't work out the last time.
ARB , I don't mind getting it if the results are that impressive. Is Eibach a good choice? Am using Eibach front and back, and happy w it.
X -Brace , where are those available ? are they fixed inside our front fender ? does it also have fix for the rear? They are fixed under the subframe. Check this out. http://www.understeer.com/xbrace.shtml

Camber plate , I have my ride set up with the 17" M Contour rims on P.Dragon 225/40/17 on front and 245/40/17 on the rear . M Contours are cool, but I don't like Dragon. Can these camber plate prolong the life span of the tyres (prolong your life by throwing away ur dragons might be a better option) by giving it an even wear ? Yes, they can, but this is not their purpose. They allow you to adjust the camber and caster of the front, and if you do it right, you'll LOVE corners. I believe my tyres wear out more on the inside. That's because of negative camber, (and maybe you don't corner hard or often enough... ;-)
Voltage Stabilizer , having the battery housed on the booth limits the products available with ground cable . No it does not. I've got 3 next to my battery. The voltage stabilizer are fixed near the battery (yes, except for red pivot, which is fixed next to ignition under the dash) and ground cable( or cables ) running from the rear to the engine? (Yes). How much is the ground cable ? what gauge are those cable if there are power cable used on amps? Ignore ur Penang instincts, and just buy a set from a reputable shop and have them install it. Life is too short to worry abt such details.
My brakes are still Ori, rear pads might due for change. AB now offer promotion for RM1488 for the brakes system replacement. What are the other proven options around on disc and pads combination? Err.. Brembo if you are serious... otherwise BMW original is fine, like Jips said.
if only Penang have the choice like those available in KL. Not much choice here and have to compromise on most occations. (Drive south for 2.5 hours and I'll buy you coffee while u mod ur car.)
Hope you don't mind me asking so many questions. Not at all. My pleasure.
Cheers.:D]

This might be a very old thread, and now revived again. Thought I just share my ownership experience here as well.

1. First impression

1997 model.
Just as I expected it would be. I've driven the e36 328i many times before, and also several types of bmw's in the past. Car has full M3 kit, lowered, brand new leather trim on doors and seats, new external rubber parts. brakes dont feel right...

2. Next impression

wow its LOW. 1st day out with the car, went to visit a friend at pantai hospital, scraped the car everywhere. guys with lowered cars, beware of this place...

3. The mod starts

Already lowered, bilstein springs and dampers. car on standard 15" rims now, looking for 17"s only at this point.

4. Performance

Enough on the powerside, just enough for me. will look to improve handling as time goes on, which is more of a priority to me.

5. Housekeeping

air cond sucks also, will get it done asap.

6. Fuel consumption

has a healthy appetite for RON97 ;)

Car had 159,000km when bought.
So far, changed some wheel bearings, hoses, all new rotors and pads. serviced and or rebuilt steering rack, new tie-rod ends. new long shaft coupling, changed all fluids, gearbox, engine, diff...

lee: do you buy a de-carb product and DIY? or you get your mechanic to do it?
as for the installation of the Raizen, where did you get that done?

cheers.

Hi Lee36328,

Thanks for the detail reply . I did some checking and found that Eibach ARB can be had for RM2100.00 include installation. The same place also can form the chassis of RM700 using Wruth products. However, the portion that will be filled with form are the chassis that is on both sides of the car where the side steps/kick panel are( entry point also at this place after removal of side steps panel).
How much will be the cost for those above and the X-brace( where can i get them with installtion? EurocarMotorsport? )
One of my friend is comtemplating in selling his much loved 325i manual to get a Honda Stream with 2.0L engine. Sure hope he change his mind as he too have spend so much $$ and time to do up to present mint condition.

BTW, the place also got Blue Raizen without cable for RM190 and RM275 with cable while Red one which takes cares of the spark/ignitions are also around RM275.00. However, the ground cables are only those available in the box which will be install one on the battery negative terminal to ground and the rest install at various parts on the engine. No long cable from engine to the battery negative terminal.

Dragon sucks ? I have only done some 15K km on them, only complaint are noise.
And yes, i have not have much of those cornering hapiness lately.

Hi 123,

My comments in blue.

[This might be a very old thread, and now revived again. Thought I just share my ownership experience here as well.

Yeah, this car has got some loyal fans. Good to see it is still being enjoyed. Keep the comments coming.

Are you talking about the 'floating caliper'?

2. Next impression

wow its LOW. 1st day out with the car, went to visit a friend at pantai hospital, scraped the car everywhere. guys with lowered cars, beware of this place...

I've welded steel plates to protect my exhaust...

3. The mod starts

Already lowered, bilstein springs and dampers. car on standard 15" rims now, looking for 17"s only at this point.

Arb, sports suspension, 17", some form of chassis strengthening, and you'll be in heaven. Check out xbrace and camber plates.

4. Performance

Enough on the powerside, just enough for me. will look to improve handling as time goes on, which is more of a priority to me.

True, the engine output easily overwhelms the standard and aging chassis. Strenghten the chassis and you will unlock the car's hidden potential.

5. Housekeeping

air cond sucks also, will get it done asap.

Naidu.

6. Fuel consumption

has a healthy appetite for RON97 ;)

If well-kept, will settle at around 24 sen/km on Vpower, mixed driving.

Car had 159,000km when bought.
So far, changed some wheel bearings, hoses, all new rotors and pads. serviced and or rebuilt steering rack, new tie-rod ends. new long shaft coupling, changed all fluids, gearbox, engine, diff...

Wow. Not bad. Any improvement after changing the long shaft? Was it vibrating before?

lee: do you buy a de-carb product and DIY? or you get your mechanic to do it?
as for the installation of the Raizen, where did you get that done?

As busy as I am, the only DIY I do is driving and pumping gas... all done by M1 or KLAuto. Raizin was from KLAuto, check out Desmond.

cheers.]

Did mine a while back, so not sure how much the foaming will cost now. Pls make sure it's done by an experienced shop - it's a non-reversible process.

Last I heard, there was an x-brace in Eurcrmsprt. Not sure if it's still there.

Your friend? Ok, I'll bite. Give me the details of his car pls. Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken, mine has a cable from the negative terminal all the way to the firewall in front. I'll check.

Ha ha. Knew that will get you.

Yes, I was happy w Dragon when new. Even took it to track.

But it does not age well. Toward the end, it got really bad. The way I drive, I can't afford the risk... know what I mean?

My next projects :

1. do my gearbox... again!
2. fine tune my front camber settings
3. new tires! pondering what to go for next...

Aiks, what's wrong with your gearbox? Thot you overhauled it not long ago? Hmmm, must be all your trackdays....:D

Ever thot of going manual?

I normally change my tyres when it reaches it's tread wear indicator. I noticed that Dragon's compound might be harder than other model being specially designed for our market. CSC2 will be my next choice , that's if nothing better comes along.
Camber plates seems like a specialist job to me, not many options here.
Might check out KL Auto when I come down for the annual dinner.

Kennyg - "Lee, how are the camber plates? Any difference in corners?"

Can't say for sure, because I installed xbrace at the same time, as you know. But this I can say, xbrace + camber plate, totally transformed the handling.

oh mannnnnnn!!!! Mod tak cakap orang  !

I need to test drive your car again ASAP!!

wah lee, looks like you have modded your machine... mmm care to let us know where is your prefered workshop? did you join for the TT in Bkt Jelutong?

As for your question on tyres, i just changed mine to Dunlop DZ 101, nice handling...

Since it has been in the market for a while, most bmw workshops would be familiar w the e36, so choice of workshop is wide.

Just pick one or two w good reputation that you trust, and stick w them. That way they know ur car and ur preferences.

I use M1 at kayu ara mostly.
