my brother was quoted 55K for 1997 328i 1 owner...just yday

Comparisom based on my car...clocked 155,000km's

Just came back after viewing this car (WXX 6128 - clocked, 168,000km's) for my brother... although it was on the pricy side, we decided to give it a try as it was only 1 owner and the car looked great (pics) via mms.

First thing i did was open the hood as the overall car looked ok, no signs of accident whatsoever... Engine was very quiet and very clean and sounds awesome when i rev'ed it, no signs of any leaking or oil stains. It was quite obvious he came straight from a car wash, hehe.. raining!

Then moved on to interior, looking good wt a nice dashboard, clear OBC wt no missing pixels and AC was cold wt a good blower. Front 2 seats and door panels were re-leather'ed... OEM kenwood HU and changer. Centre broken AC flip. Both A pillars are falling off..

Now the intresting part: test drive... Accelerator pedal was a little heavy/rough, took it for a spin.. Sadly not what i expected, the car was very sluggish and revs were weak, car is struggling at 2nd and 3rd gears.. Switch to S mode, no difference, sigh sigh, disappointment. Smooth gear changes though... steering had a lot of free play, gear lever was kinda hard too.. suspension and rims were ok, all standard.

Now the tricky bit: 1 Owner? but had 3 diff names on Reg card?? he claims the car was re-financed, by this time i have lost the tiny little bit of confidence that i still had on the car as all the above were fixable. Then came another surprise when i asked more, he told me that he had changed the ECU before to solve some ABS problems:stupid:.. and it was from an E46?? Thats it, didnt even speak about the price and we left wt nothing but disappointment... Was looking forward to the 4th E36 in our family.

Sach,

Thanks for you post. That was the kind of discussion/experience sharing that I hoped for when I statred this thread. Unfortunately this thread seems to have taken a life of its own.

Now back to your experience. I agree that it is getting harder and harder to get a clean and honest E36 nowadays with the newst car already hitting 10 years.

But I feel there are still very decent rides out there and with some patience and luck you are bound to find it.

hi anxious...

i am also looking for E36... still in the process....

btw... can join you all for TT sometime? i from Penang also

hmm e36.. in 4-5 years when i start to work, e46 will be the new e36 with price at 40-50k, which u can get a 328i e46.... e36.. become classic car already.. haha..
but e46 = more electronic parts than e36 so more headache?
i wonder what will happen to current 7 series or s class when they get old 5-10 years later? break down like mad?

anyways ive seen on motortrader M3 e36 convertible year 95, 3.0 286hp, price 90k ... weeks already its there.. seems nobody buying..

Looks like I'll be in a lot of trouble when I decide to sell my car. 12 years with 350,000 Km clocked.... but it drives better than most new cars. Important thing is the maintenance record. Good looking car, low milage, with no records? you're asking for it. So insist on maintenance records. When I sell my car, I'd probably sell my maintenance records for 10K He..he.. Hey I have to be rewarded for maintaining the car wat!

bros, i'm selling my car e36 1997 locally assembled car for 36k. good condition with minor cosmetic repairs (estimated 2.5-3k) for the potential buyer. i advertised in motortrader and you can't imagine the absurd offers i get . the following are examples :

1. "i pay cash! how much less ah? 30k can ah? uh? why kenot?? cash! cash!!" (KNN!! pay me in EURO's and i will gladly accept!)

2. "aiya! no 18" rims...very sad!" (TNM! advert says standard stock!)

3. "i pay cash! 30K ! can't pay more as i only have 10K for mods! can ah? cash wat?!" (TMNT!! got $$$ for mods but no money for car!! buy earlier model lar...)

4. "love your car! . repairs approx 2k at seller's own cost cos tight budget and need to spare transport cost (approx 4k) to transport the car to east malaysia. offer you 35K all in! will release payment upon receival of car in east malaysia (original offer)" (NMCCB! you must think i hate my car that much!)

5. "how is the car compared to a honda or a toyota ah?" (i ask the guy why you buy "Acer", not "HP"?...not "I-Mac"?...not "Dell"?...no answer)

6. "i hear my friend say maintenance is very very high wor..." (ask your friend to pay lar...f**k!)

Just sharing some of the enquiries I've received thus far. Looking forward to more enquiries...

haha hahah!!

reminds me of my expr when I sell my cars.. yup. there are a lotta non-serious people in malaysia.. I sugg with 3/4 of the buyers you can hangup almost immediately .. or just say

"30K can.. 25K can!! even 20K you pay today..!! pay in one hour even cheaper.. wan or no wan.. doe wan doe wan.. wan must fast fast,, already got offer more kuat than you.. talk cheap.. action more strong.. see when"

thee above will enable communication on the sellers lever... besides..
thats how a lotta peopel think!!

what can I say.. if you car is in good nick, well maintained then about 35 (plus/mine 2-3k either way) is probably a realistic price... someone who offers way above/below that is prob not serious and is just trying ot fish...

if you are interested in selling me the car, give feel free to PM me details of car thanks!

sounds like a REAL lemon,,, prob will cost like 10k to fix IF it can be fixed properly & a lot of risk.... reminds me of a 525i e34 I drove.. ti had zero power... engine totally friend and the seller felt it was in good condition.. and wanted 40K (this was some years back)I told him if he got 20K he better sell it hahahhs!!

With the crazy price drop on 2nd hand cars especially older than 10 years one, hell im not selling my car. Firstly besides the few minor hickups i had throughout the ownership of my E36 i find it cheap to maintain then my previous perdana. As long as u find a honest mechanic and a good one everything is fine. BTW loads of chop shop has BMW parts so no issue for parts. Few of the problems i had was air-cond, body throttle, air flow. Didnt cost a bomb to fix and i drive alot. Call me old fashion but i actually prefer E36 to E46 so hell im not changing cars. Bought mine over 6 years now, happy owner and no regrets even the price drop more than 50%. E60s are nice but too costly for me. If there is any other project i would try out the E30.

E36 is the best between performance, and some comfort.
Starting from E36, all 3 series is getting fatter generation by generation.
And to make matters worst, stupid AB don't bring it any manual E46 or E90 (thanks god my E36 is a manual :D )

Aiyo. Starting from E21, 3 series is getting bigger and heavier. Just like me. *headache*

i was just sharing with my wife how big the 3 series is from generation to generation. next 3 series is gonna be as big as the current 7 series!

ya...
cars are getting bigger and bigger (for the same categories)

and worse of all... japanese cars are getting higher and higher....
one day the sedan will be as tall as a lorry.....

but good thing is german makes never follow the trend... of making cars higher

bigger and higher is fine.
But it need to be lighter, and lower Cg (center of gravity) !!
