My E36 Experience

finally, i owned my first BMW E36 328i year 1998 on 6.6.12. i bought it from one of the forumers. it was love at first sight. new experience for me since i've been driving japanese car all this while. looking forward for my 1st routine maintenance and the repair list this weekend.

My E36 has been with me for 5 ½ years now and I have travelled over 83k km.

It has served me well throughout the last 5 years and I will be sad to see her go but I just don’t have space to keep her with the arrival of my E90.

I was just going through my records and have made a summary of my E36 Experience which is as follows:-



2007(12000km)

April -purchased the car (79895km) RM40k

April--initial repairs (Oil Service, ATF, Power Stering Absorbers, Thermstat, Valve Cover Gasket & Seal, Spark Plugs, Fuel Filter, Axle Oil Brake Fluid, Coolant etc )

May - resprayed car/changed color to black

June - replaced cylinder head, air filter, changed brake pads and rotor (R), changed tyres, tie rod

Sep -Oil Service, Coolant, Air Con Filter

Nov - new armrest

Dec -exhaust extension , inspected car @AB, Oil Service, ARB Bush & Lower Arm Bush

July- Oil Service, Spark Plugs, Coolant, ATF etc RM846.14 (100k km), Rims and tyres , Reverse Sensor

may i ask. If the transmission light came on, is it means the time overhaul the gb? In my case, last 4 months, the light came on, and my mech solved it by reset the fault code. Second time, happened last week in Batu pahat, since no workshop have the comp. Socket, i just ask them to change the transmission oil, also the light gone, but i can feel the car vibrate more. Sifus, please advice.

Hello Saz..did u proceed overhauling your GB...my e36 318 transmission light came out twice this week..but it goes off after a I did a hard reset by shutting down the engine. Need some help here by anyone who used to experienced the same.

Hi guys

I've had the transmission light come on a few times over a few years in the past 6 years ownership. I've overhauled the gearbox once.

The light comes on when the gear fails to shift, either by slipping or other reasons.

If it is because of slipping (you'd have early signs, like vibration during gear change. Not all gears, my experience was going from 2nd to 3rd - count it yourself because you can read it without a computer) then maybe the clutch plate has worn off and you'd need to overhaul the gearbox. I did mine at Jitra, it ranges between RM2K to RM4.5K depending on the damaged components inside.

SOmetimes it could be the solenoids. There are a number of solenoids underneath the gearbox, some cost about RM100 to RM700 each (recon). They exist in certain configurations and maybe one of them needs to be replaced. Then it won't cost you so much. You'd get problems with gear shifting but I think no vibrations during gear change if my memory serves me well.

Someone with knowledge can correct me if I'm wrong.

due to the current rainy season ...could be some water went into your gearbox socket pin .... just ask the workshop to clean and dry the socket up for you ..located below the gearbox housing area .

I spent rm20k+ in the 1st 8 months of ownership in 2007. Remember the problems i had inthe begining.

After that abt rm30k in 5 years which is quite fair incld mods upgrades maintenace everything....which isnt so bad.

hi guys..been following the transmission failure thread and suddenly my M43 experienced the same 4 days ago while driving back from Sri Manjung right in the middle of the village in between Teluk Intan and Bidor at about 8 pm the transmission light came out...but when I reach Bidor I shut down the engine and after a few minutes I started the engine back and the light goes off, just continue my journey safely to KL. the next day went to my Mech and he send my car to his friend to check with the computer. it says there is problem with the Engine Knock sensor and the speed selector switch. then he refer the case to his sifu another UDM specialist. according the sifu we can not trust the machine, he said the GB is the problem. my mech suggested we change the gear box oil and hope for the best. I pray its nothing serious, but till now the transmission runs smoothly and the light did not come out anymore.

I really need some feedback on weather is there any truth said by the sifu my mechanic referring to. had anybody experienced problems with the engine knock sensor or the selector switch as indicated by the diagnostic tool.

If its gearbox, you"ll know it. Warning lights will come on and gear will be stuck in lower gears.....dragging.

In my case i cld feel car getting abit sluggish a couple of weeks b4.

After gearbox rebuild, car drives wonderfully.

I was lucky,it happen after 5 years of ownership.

Up till today the warning light has not flashes yet...the gear change over seems to be like normal. hopefully my mechanic advised me correct...

well mine also happen after the fifth year of ownership...

a bit worrying though coz had to go to Ipoh in a few days time....maybe have to swap cars for this journey.

Sifus out there should I wait for the light to comes back or.....

Back to my e36.

After 5 yrs and 9 mths of ownership, my e36 has found a new home today. A good friend took over the ownership today.

Well i am already onto my next project......06/07 325i E90. Started new thread already.

E90 is superb but sometimes i still miss the "feel" of my e36!

oh i miss that one...good to have another project there..well, e90 is better and newer but the previous doesnt seem easily forgotten right?
