Neoh, for E39, the headlamp is sealed with glue. You need to bake it in the oven to soften the glue in order to open the headlamp. Do a search on this retrofit. It have been done before but it take a bit more time.

CCFL is cold cathode fluroscent light. They need a inverter to convert 12VDC to 120VAC/300Hz in order to work.
I have bad experience with inverter for my E46 HID light.
SMD LMD are surface mounted device LED. They are plug and play and operate from 12VDC direct. it does not need any inverter to work and hence save space.
