320i bought new from AB 2 years ago been experiencing bumpy and jarring ride. Got a courtesy 316i lately and the ride is as comfortable as my e39.

This rule out the run flat being the culprit.

Anyone know the differences in both models suspension system? Can replace the 320i absorbers with 316i?

Cheers.

I drove 320d M Sport up to 180kmh without any problems. Felt like normal 120kmh smooth :).
I suppose I could push to 200kmh but didn't do that. It was on Eco mode, not the sports mode.

Driving 200km/hr on Eco pro mode? Wonder what's the purpose?

Not intentional to test eco pro. But just pushed the pedal without realizing it on the highway and it worked

What's your mileage now after 2 years? The courtesy should have quite a low mileage as they tend to sell it off after a few months of usage so the suspension on it would not have went into many potholes and insane speed humps. I'm using a 316i too and I can tell you after owning it for 1.5 years my sussy feels like crap when I take it on uneven roads..as if the system does not absorb the shock enough so I feel all the vibrations.

As for the difference...none I think. The 320d M-Sport setup has a passive M-Sport sussy and the 328i M-Sport setup has adaptive system. The only difference I can make out is @ the front where the 320i engine is heavier hence BMW had to do some minor adjustments to the setup...but I could be wrong.

I am going to share my experience.. not sure which suspension setup you have.
On the F10, we have electronic damper controls for the shocks.

Experience - how the system screws up
1) Once plugged into 3rd party diagnostics/reset/test systems (outside workshops)
2) Once in a while, when you start the car, and the system detects fault or error in one of the many sensors related to driving dynamics (No error message but internal faults are stored)

The suspension will be very hard, almost as if, you are driving on rails. Every small bump can be felt. As if there is no shocks at all.
(This is not a fail safe mode(no error displayed))

System does not correct it self - send it back to factory for a reset -hopefully they acknowledge and resolve it for you (Quill failed to rectify for me despite many trips back)

Solution :
Get a ENET cable, install INPA on your Notebook

1) Connect to car
2) Start the car (*Important - not just ignition)
3) Select Chassis Type - F10 , or F30 etc
4) Clear all error messages (both hard/soft fault)
5) Reset Dynamic Vertical Management ECU
6) Go to EDC (Electronic Damper Controls), you'll see "Satellite Dampers" (there will be 4 - Front Right, Left, Rear Right Left)
7) Select to "Release Damper Values", for each of the "Up - Hard, Up- Soft" - then click "Save All Values"
8) Select to "Release Damper Values", for each of the " Down - Hard, Down - Soft" - then click " Save All Values"
9) Do a Reset All on the EDC- Satelite
10) Off the car completely (remove keys)

You will find your suspension smooth and supple like the first day you got the car.
(FYI - takes getting used to as INPA is all in German)

Unfortunately, the above cannot be done using ISTA/D

This is my personal experience and I have spent a lot of time researching the above.

I cannot be sure if it will work for F30 - you do the above at your own risk. OK?

I do appreciate feedback. Thanks

Finally, got back the car ftom AB after almost a month for them sorting out all complaints. Now it totally felt like a different car from tight and weighted steering feel to basically having the absorbers performing like one.
The did mentioned replacing absorber mounting, but not sure what else they replaced, added or removed.

Now can feel like a BMW from steering feel to ride and handling. No more bone jarring ride. Took them 2 years to finally sort out their assembly problems.

Bought new 320i from Ingress a month back & experiencing a lot of issues with suspension/handling...

- The car is too bouncy, Comfort and Sports mode, shakes left <> right too much.
- All the small bumps on the road can be felt; this is at low speed in Comfort mode.
- Squeaking sound from the front side when driver sits in before starting the car.
- Sound from front side when the car goes over the hump/speed breaker.
- Car get shifted while going through yellow/red lines or split line in the highway, noticeable when it’s in turning/corner position
- Car unable to maintain in the center of lane for straight road, noticed in speed above 100kmh.
- Also experiencing under steering/over steering in smooth corner in the highway
- Once in a while, experiencing car dragged to left/right on speed above 80kmh.

I'm not sure if these are common.. Anyone got any idea?

For last three, suggest check alignment, tyre pressures and steering adjusted

Looks like you need to raise these issues with the SC and do it quick for the alignment issues and pls check your tyre pressure too as suggested by bro KengKok. RFTs are hard so you will feel every single bump on the road unless you switch it out for non-RFT. I'm currently using non-RFT and its way better in ride comfort and the road noise is reduced.

As for the bouncy ride you will need to change to the after market suspension to solve it. You may search in this forum about it as its a widely known issue. We're hoping the stock suspension in the LCI F30 coming later this year will sort things out. The Comfort and Sport modes does nothing to the suspension unless you buy the 328i M-Sport which has adaptive suspension.

For interior noise its a never ending battle. I have squeaky front seats and I need to apply leather cream to stop the noise. If you have other noises that aren't supposed to be there then your best bet is to demo it to the SC techies and have them solve it for u. It took me 3-4 visits to the workshop for them to iron out all the interior noise and settle some other issues with the car.

Done alignment, tire pressure check, steering check, suspension check... Checked by Ingress & AB, but still same... The wobbling & shaky seems to be standard character for 320i. Most of the time I do highway driving only (120-160).. Speed above 130kmh+driver only+petrol below half tank, really sucks...

My F30 Suspension Upgrade

My F30 suffers from the common suspension problems of floatiness, bounciness, front-end dive during braking and crashing into dips on the road. On several occasions small bumps taken a little too aggressively will unsettle the rear end and gave way. The Missus complained about the ride almost everytime she rides in it. Rear passengers gets thrown about and several have complained of car sickness. It seems to be getting worse with time. Further to this, I fitted the MSports body kit with the MPerf add-on. This lowered the car body by 1" and added with the softness of the suspension, I crashed into road bumps resulting in the replacement of the front lower lip spoiler. Every time I climb the incline to park the car at home, the lip will scrape the road. After 2 years, I couldn't take it anymore and decided to do something about it.
I considered many solutions and setups from several brands. But I concluded that the chief culprit are the shock absorbers and decided on Bilsteins for its value for money and their reputation.

With the Bilsteins, I had the following options:
Option 1 - Change shocks only, keeping the stock springs and anti-roll bar.
Option 2 - Change shocks and springs, keep the ARB stock.
Option 3 - Change complete suspension which includes shocks, springs and ARB.

I considered the Bilstein B6 which are uprated shocks for non-lowered cars but availability was an issue.
I can have Bilstein B8 which is essentially the same shocks as the B6 but it can be used for both standard height and lowered cars. This is more widely available.

I was tempted to go for the Bilstein B12 set which consist of the B8 shock absorbers matched with shortened comfort biased Eibach springs. This setup will also allow me to fit beefier uprated ARB from H&R for better roll resistance. I didn't fancy the similarly shortened H&R springs because it is too sports biased. The B12 setup will lower the car by an additional 1" which would be totally unacceptable and will aggravate the lowness problem. I could upgrade the rims to larger 19" to compensate for this, but I am not ready to do this yet.
So I decided on option 1 - just replace the shock absorbers to B8 because it still gives me the option to go B12 at a later date. Installation of the B8 was very quick and painless. All it took was a couple of hours. It was an exact fit except that the standard bump stops had to be ditched cos they will not fit the larger B8 shafts. I immediately took the car for a realignment after the fitment.

The result of the B8 is immediately felt. It has transformed the car. The ride feels firmer and the road rumble is felt and heard more than previous. The bounciness, floatiness and dive are completely gone. The car feels more planted during cornering. I do feel the road surface undulations a bit more than the standard shocks. It is still comfortable, not jarring at all. I think the soft CSC5 tires are helping here. Dips or road humps can be taken more aggressively with a muted thud instead of the previous dive, crash, fly and loss of back-end. Now I can drive up the porch without scraping the lower lip.

It should settle down in the next few days.
My missus gives it the thumbs up when we took a dip on the highway at high speed. I am enjoying my ride again.
I strongly recommend it. Beware it will void your warranty.

After the above, I strongly believe the floatiness, bounciness and front-end dive of the F30 is purely a suspension issue. Changing the shocks will cure the problem.

My F32 does not have the problem

Hi, Encik Saat, I am driving a 2013 F30 320i with stock suspension and needless to say, I too detest the floaty and bouncy ride. Read your interesting sharing posted back in Oct 2015 about changing to Bilstein B8 and I am very interested to change to B8 like what you did.

Just want to find our how's your ride now with the B8 after almost 2 years with the Bilstein B8? What is the costs back then?
