Learning to use an E90

What are the spec/trim levels of the E90 320i nowadays? I know there used to be 320i and the 320i SE. Now they have limited run 88-units Highline. Don't they offer the 320i SE nowadays anymore?

I think in BMW-speak, "parking lights" refer to what we commonly know as the "angel eyes" i.e. the four rings. The feature that you are mentioning might be the Safety Lights (or something like that). To activate it: after you switch off the engine, activate the high beam, both lights will stay on for about 30 secs to light your path...

There's this thing call Courtesy Light or Welcome Light you can set. Need to learn about this too. That's for lighting your walk path at night after locking the car. There's preset duration of I think 10sec. Personalisable into the key.

There use to have std and SE for E90. Now the SE become std and upgraded SE with blacklines tail lights, called "High Lines".

That's why my 320i (std) comes with 17" rim and Climate friendly window coating, Bi-Xenon, semi-electric front seat, rain sensor.. bla bla bla.. That's why I don't mind getting an '07 car now because of all this bla..bla..bla.. :D

Man, all these features are so simple yet our local car manufacturers arent doing it for some reason. I'm writing these down to DIY some of the stuff for E36

oh, i meant only one side of the angel eyes are on. lets say parking on the left sided of the road, so you would wanna on the right side angel eyes as well as the corresponding rear lights, how do i do that? i tried that by changing lights to auto then moving the indicator stalk, but only sometimes successful, any BM tech here?

Seriously, these might be simple but lots of designing effort involved and bear in mind that whatever item installed, its under the warranty coverage for the next few years and lots of running cost involved for maintaining such technologies in the car from the manufacturer side. We just pay and use, simple! They are the one with headaches and they need to keep cost low to stay competitive. BMW is certainly not their competitor because different market segment.

Local manufacturer? They can't even sort out the head lights keep burning problem! They better stay away from such technology before someone gets hurt! :smokin:

Another trick is; u start your car. then u off it. take out your key, & re-start again...wallaa, u can drive your car without a key...hehehe....enjoy...

kompius maaaaa....

What I meant was, some of those can be done by yourself by programming a PIC microcontroller thru a relay map, the major concern is getting the right sensors and reliable sensors for the application.

I dont mean all, i mean some of the simpler ones. The harder ones are possible too if I have access to the wiring harness before its installed in the car. But of course that's not gonna happen.

I'll look into it for the next DIY project

I don't think there's any electrical contact between the key and the lobang on the dashboard. Pushing the key in is to trigger a button switch behind the dashborad lobang and once that's activated, the "PUSH START" button is ready to fire. During which, even if key pull out, the car can still run.

What JV88 said is possible. This is a "close proximity" technology just like RFID signal and contact is not required for such technology as long as the key is within "range".

How difficult to get the headlights working without burning every few weeks? I wish them good luck man! It might be simple for u and me but we must accept the fact that human are born with different IQ level.. :thefinger:

Just do the DIY and don't forget to post your findings. Am eager to see your creation!

Going for the Courtesy Light and the Parking Light first!
I'll be watching this thread for more ideas

There are minor differences in 05,06,07 and 08 spec E90's. One difference is Simon's 08 E90 no longer comes with 3 keys unlike mine. Also no wallet key holder in the glove box to re-attach and place into the ignition. Did your car come with 2 or 3 keys?

I believe that the ignition key hole has electrical contacts so that the right key will start the car, and data is downloaded like your mileage to your key each time. I think its also re-charging the key as you plug it into the ignition hole.

For keyless entry, the 335i spec we get here has it. BMW comfort access. MeinAuto demo'ed this to us in our meetup sometime back. To lock the car, just step out of the car and touch the door handle or something. Really neat.

Mine only 2 keys.. no wallet key.

For valet parking, recommended to:

1. pull the metal key out,
2. put all valuables either in the glove compartment or boot, then
3. lock the boot from the glove compartment, then
4. lock the glove compartment with the metal key.
5. Keep the metal key and pass the remote to the jockey.

The jockey won't be able to open the glove compartment and boot.

Another interesting observation we found when comparing cars is that the chassis welding type is different between CKD, CBU South Africa and CBU Germany. Mine and JPB's are Munich build and have the same type of welding on the chassis. Energy's CBU E90 has chassis welding similar to what we get here on the CKDs. You can pop your hood and look at the weld spots just below the chassis number. Munich built E90 welds look something like this:

BJM7978,
what I mean is our E90 key got the memory that even after u switched off the car and pulled out your key, within a few second u can even re-start it by press the start/stop button without using the key. About the same function as keyless entry but not that easy though. Cheers :burnout:

Why do u want to do that? Can't seem to find the reason to do it.. apart from the feel good factor for "hacking" the BMW computer.. :D

sometimes, when u stop at any petrol station alone for 'natures call' or whatever, u don't want to stop the engine car & prefer the air-con running but u cannot let the car on without anybody inside rite? So what do u do.....One way is applying this trick lor..
