I'm looking to bring in a F10 523i but found out that Asian ones come standard with a 2.5l engine. The global one (3.0l engine) specs are fine, but the specs on the 2.5l looks a bit anemic. Worst of all is that BMW Germany, which I'm dealing with, says that they have only one global price for the 523i. If its to be exported to Malaysia, then it gets a 2.5l by default, with no discounts compared to the 3.0l global version, plus the 2.5l engine is an older one as well. Really pisses me off. Looking further, I found the F10 520d - its cheaper with better performance. Beats the 523i Auto (Asian spec) by half a second on 0-100 and a full second on 80 - 120. BMW confirmed that the 520d motor will not be derated for Asian spec cars. (Common rail pressure may be lowered but particulate filter will be removed, so no net change in performance)The only drawback is that its a 4cyl and probably rattles rather than hums. I've never had a diesel before, let alone driven one. Since the F10 520d will only be rolling off the lines later this month, the only feedback I can draw is from any E60 520d owners. I know that the torque band is narrower on diesels, but BMW still uses the same transmission as petrol engines. Does anyone have any driving experience on the E60 520d on noise level & vibration (in cabin) as well as how well the transmissions are mated to the engines, any gaps in power delivery etc? Thanks

The diesel model is the new 184 horsepower BMW X3 xDrive20d – this 184hp and 380Nm version of BMW’s single turbocharged 4-potter diesel engine made its debut in the BMW F10 and is expected to hit our E90 LCI 320d pretty soon.....Wait for the new 2L diesel engine...bro.....hitting Malaysian shores soon...

BMW seems to be putting the 2.0l diesel in its product lines quite aggressively. The have recently launched the F10 touring, which is the first F10's to have the 2.0l diesel. Read that they are now using active engine mounts that go soft or stiff depending on the revs, so the apparently the F10 is quiet even with the 2.0l 4 cyl diesel.

My main concern is how intrusive is the diesel clatter and vibrations are when inside the car. Not bothered if it sounds like a tractor on the outside, as long as its quiet on the inside.

BMW Germany has given me an indicative late October date for the F10 520d delivered to Malaysia.

My 320d is damn quiet inside. Go for the 520d I would say if you are aiming for a 5 series and don't want to spend 400K for an anemic 523i.

Judging by the 320d, the car is very quiet inside whether at idle or on the move. And I agree, I don't particularly care if it's loud outside as long as it's quiet inside and I've been satisfied.
