I'm not a big fan of wails and howls (ala Ferrari, Maserati or Lamborghini styled exhaust notes) - I don't really like to announce to everyone of my impending arrival, so the timbre of the exhaust note doesn't give me a hard-on as much as some. I'm however, pretty particular about how I want my ride experience to be (shudder-free). How I want the power delivery to be (smooth, silky) and how I like the feeling of ample reserves available at my command - the N52 in its various forms & displacements can deliver that experience. It never seems to run out of breath at every-day speeds of driving, and you'll learn to appreciate just how quiet and subtle the car is, at idle. None of that shuddering or clicking over that can sometimes plague diesels or 4-potters. It's a very very refined experience.
Again, just my 2 cents worth
Well said wobbles. That's the reason why i am still undecided between 520d and 523.
Tested both cars last week. I must say that the torque in 520d is amazing but at high speed, the output is lacking compared to the 523. Both are equally good cars nonetheless. Inside the 520d is pretty quiet but i can still hear the low sound of the diesel engine, especially when you go on slow in traffic jams. Once you step out, or when i hear the car salesman driving off the 520d, it does not sound like BMW at all.
I'm currently driving an E39 523 and i am not sure if i can ever get used to that diesel sound. Strangely the 520d is selling better compared to the 523. Most 2011 stocks for 520d is almost gone while there are still plenty of 523. The price of 520d is simply too good to dismiss the car and the torque is really out of my expectations.
Need to decide soon. Help! Help!
