Hi people,

Just several weeks ago, on my way up to Cameron Highlands, the iDrive indicator showed that the engine oil was at minimum level. I called BMW mobile, and they advised me to top up 1 litre of Shell Helix Ultra Fully Synthetic Oil which I did.

Now 2 weeks later, I am concerned with the engine performance. I called BMW Voice again, and enquire them regarding engine oil topup if I should send my car to BMW authorised dealers to topup.

Apparently, the technician on the phone said normally they do not top up oil, the dealers will perform a full service change of oil and oil filter.

Now being worried if my engine is at optimal performance, I asked if I could just do a topup instead of a full service since I have 8k km left till the next service change.

The technician said

At minimum level, the engine oil left is still drivable because there is still 5 litres left in the engine. However to keep engine operating at best performance BMW advises users to do service even between the service change provided by BMW. He also said no need to worry of anything until iDrive pops up a signal, then only I send it to the SC

What do you guys think? Should I be worried and just do a service now even though I have 8k km left to the next service, or should I just try to top up myself?

1. +1L engine oil top up for N52 engine in the E9x and E6x is pretty common at an interval of 6k ~ 8k km.

2. The engine is better off to have sufficient oil than 1L short.

3. Try not to stretch engine oil use to above 10k km.

4. If the +1L comes up at 8k km, then it make more sense to replace the oil than topping it up and drive another 2k km. If at 6k km, then just top up and use another 4k km lor.

5. Best is to top up with the same grade and brand oil if you want to be particular. For me, any fully synthetic of the same viscosity would do for top up.

I forgot to mention that I am already at 16k km. I had my 1st service done at 8k km while 2nd service is due in 8k km (25k km).

So at 16k km(another 8k km to service), I had to top up engine oil of 1 litre on my way up to Cameron when the signal showed.

1. Should I be worried or just wait till something pops up? like a signal from iDrive or a piston flying out from the bonnet.
2. Is it true at engine oil minimum level, there is approx. 5 litres of engine oil left in the engine?

Sry if I didn't write my post clear enough.

For me, I wouldn't mix engine oil of different brand, not to mention different grades or different batches even if the brand and grade is the same.
Perhaps I am too anal, but it's just some precautions that's within my reach.
Expert says change the oil every 6 months and you're safe.

~ 6 cylinder N52 is running on 6.5 liters or 6.9 quarts (edited :p) engine oil. If u r 1L short, then u should have 5.5L left.

~ If your 1st oil change was at 8k km on the odo, your subsequent oil change should be +10k km, so your 2nd oil change should be at RM18k km on the odo. And if you already at 16k km on the odo, that means you have traveled 8k km since the last oil change. Short of 1L after 8k km traveled is common for N52 engine even though some say their's remain full. If u intend to travel another 2k km to complete the 10k km, you should top up, if you already book for oil change this week, another 300km without topping up should still be minimal risk to the engine.

~ If you want to wait till 25k km on the odo to do the oil change, top up now is a must, but most of us won't advise using the engine oil for more than 10k km. You shall see sludge in your engine as early as 40k km and overhaul should be at around 80k km. Good luck!

I just sent mine for the service.

It cost RM530 for a normal service, I was lucky enough to get the Raya promotion for RM488.

6 cylinder N52 uses 6.5L of engine oil..... not 7.5L.....
