thanks for the facts schwepps. you sure sound like a marketing manager or product manager. and back to oils, what would be a good intermediate oil change (10k km) choice easily available in retail outlets? i ask this so that i can do an out-of-BSRI oil change at my workshop of choice.

Thought you're using Ravenol SSL? That looks pretty good. Otherwise Helix Ultra from any Shell station. They're both about the same price, and about 1/2 the price of dealer oil. But use an original BMW oil filter.

thats right i'm using ravenol. its just that shell H U is so much more convenient location wise for me. thx

Hmmnn... base on what Schwepps provided, our engine can only last 100k miles because we are using 5w-30 oil provided and recommended by SC. That means 160k km.. Averaging 30k km per year, we should be selling our ride immediately after it crosses 5th year.

For turbology's car, he's using 5w-40 so his engine can last 150 miles, that's 240k km. So he is in no hurry to sell his car until approaching 8th year..

Of course that 8 years on the road, you will be passed by similar cars that runs on 5w-30 which is slightly more powerful and more economical.. :D

If u run 10w-50, that's 320k km.. or 10w-60, that's 400k km.. that's why I ask why u stop at 240k km.. :p

For me, I had to stop at 5w-30 unless I wish to sell my car after 100k km.. Unless I make enough for upgrade every 3 years......... unlikely.. :(

Dear Astroboy,

If money is not an issue, which brand of engine oil would you recommend for e90 320? Torco, Q8? what spec, 0w-30 or 5w-30 ?

My main concern is performance as i intend to change car every 5 years. My e90 is 10 months old.

How long u intend to keep the car?! in kilometer terms.. 5 year is subjective because engine life greatly depend on mileage, not age. If your answer is >200k km, I would suggest u to avoid SAE30 oil and use SAE40 instead, or higher. SAE30 is performance oil, gives u power and fuel economy. Too thin to provide adequate protection should u want to keep the car above 200k km.

I'll be switching to Castrol Powerflow SLX 0w-30.. it should perform better than Torco in terms of durability and protection. Very cheap! Less than RM200/4L but can only get from Tan Chong service center. Don't forget to bring along a Nissan car number as they only sell to Nissan customer.

DearAstroboy,

thanks for the advice. the answer is less than 200km. I only do less than 25k km per year. I only want performance. what about q8 formula 1, 10w-50 or q8 longlife 5w-30?

Can you get the castrol powerflow at tan chong in PJ? what do mean by bring along a Nissan car number?

Yes.. I bought mine from that Tan Chong SC, PJ, on the road between Jaya 14 to Jln University... dunno what road name la.

Park your car in front of the showroom, walk to the back (Service Area), there's a Service Advisor hall. Have to buy it through the Service Adviser.. pay to the Cashier there, in the same hall. When they open bill, they will ask for your Nissan car number plate. Give them other car number, it will show invalid car, so bill cannot be generated. I use my friend's X-Trail number.

Don't go to the Spare Part room window, they won't entertain u.

Q8? I tried their 5w-40 but very thick la, unless u can get their 5W-30, which I think more expensive than Powerflow SLX.. so I suggest Powerflow SLX for your "performance" car..

Has anyone used Petronas Syntium 5000 0W/30 ?

Saw that being recommended in Autocar Mag for CoTY E90 325

Luckily I owns a X-Trail....so my BMW and X-Trail will benefit from each other...:top:

Just changed my engine oil from Quill PJ, 20,000km change. They use Castrol edge sports 5w-30. Engine feels sluggish compare to the previous engine oil I used which was from Ingress. i think its syntium.

Didn't like the feel of the engine with the new Castrol edge sports. Anybody got similar experience......

Sakit hati lah!!!

Astroboy & schweppes; how about oil for my 335i ? Which is the best ???

Bro, your 335 oil is available at TESCO or CARREFOUR. Variuos brands too, ie: Red Eagle, Knife, Neptune, Naturel, and etc....All these are LL06 & much suitable for 335.

Those are a bit upmarket, BlackE. Minyak Chap Kapak should be good enough mah! :D

Aside from recommendations from your jealous friends who wish to see your 335i grind to a halt, if you change oil & filter every 6mths or 12k (as I know you would), it doesn't really matter what brand you use so long as it's 5W-30 weight.

But if it were my 335i, I would use Shell Helix Ultra AB to ensure I'm using a true fully-synthetic PAO oil. Why Shell? Because they're 1 of the only 4 PAO producers in the world. All the others, including Petronas, are buying feedstock from them, and blending, packaging and marketing it under their brand. Some even outsource the blending and packaging.

and whre can i buy this SHUAB lube? doesnt sound like your garden variety shell lube u can buy off the shelf.
thanks

Ultra AB is only available as dealer fill, just like Syntium LL. I know you can get it from C&C PJ and I believe some ABs are using it, maybe Segambut. You need to call around. Ultra AB from C&C is slightly cheaper than Syntium LL from IA, about RM80+ per litre.

Hi all 3-series master... I just bought a pre-owned 320i. Mileage only 40,000km, confirmed by Auto Bavaria genuine mileage. Look like new. I have been driving for a week, condition is PERFECT. Then, many told me now BMW revise the engine oil change interval to 10k or 12k km. Since this is used car, I go 3rd party workshop for oil change. Change 4Liter of Mobile One 5W-50 oil. Since the oil change, I started to notice oil leak mark on the car park. I monitor 3 days now and each day I saw a small drop of oil.

May I know what is the possible cause and possible advise on solution? Could this be the engine oil leak problem or possible the mechanic did not tighten fully? Because it never happen when I drive the car for a week and only happen after oil change.

Appreciate your comment.. please.
