Yes, now I would agree with you that a dipstick would be better. Apparently the oil level sensor is rather sensitive, as it also has to measure the viscosity of the oil. If it can't get a proper read on the viscosity, it will tell you to top up 1 litre, and that's not good for the engine at all if it's already full. It can often happen just after an oil change when the viscosity suddenly changes because it's new oil.
