My 2008 E92 325i Alarm asking me to top up 1ltr oil. Is this normal??

thanks guys.. much appreciated. Now I can sleep better at night.. will just use the alarm as a reminder for oil change :D

I think it is normal especially in this climate and if you enjoy revving the engine or do long distances often.
If this troubles you though, you may want to consider a not so thin synthetic oil for next oil change, like 10w/60 as opposed to 0w/40, etc. but it COULD dull the performance slightly.
BTW, I think the good old look at your driveway for oil stains to detect oil leaks is not as effective as before given these cars have a tray attached to the bottom so intermittent leaks may not ever get to the driveway.

Is normal, happen to my E90 325 few days ago, just done 8K since last service. Didn't top up, straight do oil change :D in SC.

I suspect the sonic oil sensor mis-interpret "dirty oil" as "insufficient oil", the only way to find out is to drain the oil into a container with measurement scale to see if really drop in oil quantity as oppose to drop in oil quality. I suspect no loss in oil, only dirty oil contaminated by our notoriously high sulfur content in fuel.

I have been having this problem for a while now. Been topping up 1L three times after an engine oil change. During the next change, notice oil overflow at the filter area, so the mechanic change the filter housing gasket. Thought the problem will go away, however after only one week the oil level indicator flashed up again, suddenly below minimum. Asked mechanic, he said that this could be the oil level sensor kaput. Been driving with the annoying oil level warning for about 4,000 km, got pissed then top up 1L yesterday morning. Surprisingly, the sensor still reads below min and still indicates to top up 1L !!!

So, do I change my sensor or still top up?

Nizam, there are cases whereby the oil quality sensor kaput and need replacement. I suggest to immediately take note of the abnormality when +1L warning pops up prematurely i.e. below 7k km traveled in the magnesium n52 6-potter..

Fortunately I've never had that problem before. I've changed oil twice already every 10,000km.

I use PETRONAS Syntium 5000. So far they rock. I love 'em.

Astroboy, mine is N46 320i. Been having this problem for the past 3 or 4 oil change. My mileage now is 92k already. Don't want to keep topping oil as the engine may end up with too much oil which will lead to many other problems.

I guess it is timely to change the sensor, anyone know the price? Can't stand the annoying warning anymore. Maybe BMW should revert back to the oil dip stick.

Lan,
Also used Syntium 5000 and need to top up 1L before next oil change (after 7k), agreed they are rock Bro.

nizan1979, our N46 is actually same as the N46 used in the last batch of E46 and they get dip stick. i thinking to retrofit since warranty habis liao! Shouldn't be expensive..

Wah, can do such retrofit ka? Kinda interesting. I wonder how much it would cost? So what do we do with the sensor, de-activate it?

i'd say this is normal. I experienced with E87 118 before. Now with 08 E92 also same.

Both used Shell Helix Ultra fully synthetic - from authorized SC.

When the sensor pop-up, I checked engine oil level using dip-stick, true enough at low level. So topup 1 ltr, & dipstick back to max level. So, it was not not sensor problem. BY the way, between low & max level on dip-stick is 1l oil required.

I've never asked anyone why that happened using that particular engine oil.

Just wondering, if there anyone use an oil treatment? if it, how it's going?

I've been using Syntium 3000 since day one. Alhamdulillah, no need to top up thus far, except once when I stretched the 3rd oil change interval to 14k. After that incident, reduced the interval to 8k. My May 2008 E90 325i mileage now is 100k plus.

I have a 323i .. It is normal to top up the oil once it reaches 12000 to 15000km between oil change..my sensor detect that engine oil level start dropping after 12000km.. My 2009 car has already done 90000km .. So I have done quite a few engine oil top up.. Don't seem to have any problem and my last service at ab Glenmarie report all normal..

eEkkKK... what oil change interval are you following? How many km your replace oil once?
