...for diesel turbo too??

Yes, I have friends who have remapped their VW GTi, Airtrek Turbo, Sorento, Rexton and Range Rover TD5. I was told the increased in bhp & torque were significant :top:

p/s: I believe it'll be the same for BMW turbo diesel engines

Why I can not get any info about ECU remap from oversea forum? Curious the ECU remap is not recommended?

Hi all enthusiasts!

Regarding ECU remapping, I have experiences on it and would recommend anyone who wanted better engine power and responses to go for it.

I am just offering my 2 cents worth and my information may not be 100% correct. If so please feel free to correct.

I am very happy with Bernard as my E39 M54B25 has been tuned for Bernard from BVO himself (while he was in KL and organized by member Feisal) and it is now running at 161WHP, bearing in mind the the stock bhp from the engine is appx 192bhp, and factoring in 30-40% loss in automatic transmission (manual transmission, DSGs, SMGs are more efficient gear boxes and thus present less losses in HP).

Remapping or ECU tuning basically boils down to Air/Fuel ratio (AFR) among other things. All mass produced cars are normally tuned to be running your AFR richer than is really necessary for vehicle longevity (more importantly engine). As a simple explanation, if the AFR is too RICH, then our engine is like being choked with too much fuel at an instantt without oxygen to help it burn, thus not really as fuel efficient and producing more carbon by products. Remapping methods commonly sought to LEAN out this AFR. Of course, the AFR tuning is also dependant on your throttle position/load as well as your RPM. A good tuner will have to max your car's potential while retaining a fair bit of safetly margin to prevent your engine from blowing itself out (if too lean).

Is it reliable or safe for your engine, some may ask. I would say it is quite safe as long as your tuner is knowledgeable. In the end, if you engine or car is in bad condition, it is definitely not going to help your car/engine's condition. Again car performance is not all about engine power alone... its about the whole package... Imagine yourself driving your BMW monster and speeding up to 250kmh or more and fast approaching a bend but your suspension/brakes/chassis/tyres were to fail you (any which will likely kill you)!

So my advices to you all enthusiasts are to make sure your car is in good condition (engine too of cos) before doing your ECU remap. For those who are interested to have other mods like upgrading exhaust systems, air intakes/filters, cams, you should do your upgrades firstly before going for your ECU remaps to maximise all your mods' potential. Make sure you know your mods and inform your tuner (Bernard from BVO in this case) accordingly when he is tuning your ECU.

Exclusion Clause: IT MAY/MAY NOT RENDER YOUR CAR'S WARRRANTY AS NULL AND VOID!

Cheers!

Is the ECU remap transferable from a car to another car?

the remap is basically a new mapping loaded onto the ECU to replace the stock map.. So what do u mean by transferable? U would need the reader and whatever tools to read the mappings and load onto another car.. or something along the line.

It's not a chip like the older OBD1 DME (without EWS) where u can just take the chip out and put onto another car with the similar DME..

can M52 undergo the remapping process as well?

yes, he covers the ECU remapping from E46,E39 , E90,E60, E65, Z series , X series, & including new 335 turbo, except e36 where the ECU is working on Eprom chip

You are correct, when u flash the ECU you are actually erasing all data from the original ECU and putting in a new programme...normally they will save ur original ECU setting into a thumbdrive/CD so that you can reflash back to original settings if need be... anyway they will only tweak certain perimeters only and not evrything... ..but piggyback is just tricking/bypassing the original ECU but the BMW ECU is very smart and after it finds out that its being tricked it overrides the piggyback settings..
I may be wrong but this is what I was made to understand.

I see. If under any circumstances I need to revert back to the original setting, can any workshop with the computer re-flash it back, or do I need to contact the person who flash it?

I believe anyone with the software program is able to re-flash it as long as you have the original map! Normally, the person who did the re-map in the first place keeps your file.

Thank you to all the Sifiu's for your input and advice. I am just discovering this and am really keen to try this out.

Ade, I am trying to work out a group discount for us. Did Bernard say how many cars we need to get together for that price of RM1500? I am hoping to get it as low as RM1,000.

Have been a bit busy today and have not had the chance to follow up with Bernard.

He didn't say how many cars for RM1500. He just told me its gonna cost me RM1500 if there's enough demand to warrant him coming down to KL. I doubt RM1000. Maybe you can check with Feisal who organized the last trip. There were I think at least 10 cars and prices are about there as well..
