Hi Astroboy,

where do you dispose off the engine oil drained from your car? I am gagging to have a go on my own but I cannot find a place that can take those oil. A friendly garage?

Excellent question. I bottle it back and bring it out to a friendly garage when ever possible.

The stupid drain plug is not easy to open.. I almost gave up because the top is too thin for my size 17 ring wrench (couldn't get a good bite) and too tight for my hex bit, I almost twisted and broke my hex bit. I abandon project on Saturday evening, half way doing the Astro installer come install PVR for me.. ka-ka-ciao-ciao. On Sunday, I jack the car higher and use a cold chisel to knock the drain plug to loosen it. Ideal tool to open the drain plus is this..

Will go look for an replacement plug that has magnet.. size M12x1.5

Noted! Never seem like a problem with the mechanics.

I hope the new oil filter comes with a new drain plug washer.

Just to share, recently my rear right window regulator also ka-put on me. After checking a few website I decided to tackle it on my own but parts were expensive and hard to find. Bavarian Auto quoted RM330 for Germany one, Bomin RM380. Labour is around RM50. Cheapest Taiwan one I found was Sttuggart which was RM170 but they don't have stock and won't know when the stock will come (because of a sudden surge in demand for window regulator?).

In the end I got in done at an accessory shop at JB en route to Singapore for RM230 plus labour. The foreman actually said that BMW's door is much easier to dismantle than a wira! Easier to fix on also.

It can run anything la, if you not particular. If you particular and strictly follow the book, then use only BMW LL 5w30 lor. What's your concern?

0w-40 is similar to 5w-40 which is very common among the non-authorised workshop and is regularly used for E90 oil change. 0w-40 is more costly to produce compare to 5w-40 due to the more liquid state during cold start where the oil gets into the cam area a tad faster than the 5w-40, thus reduce wear and tear at the very critical cold start moment. At RM129/bottle, why should I complain? :4:

0w-30 or 5w-30 is not available in Tesco, if they have, I sure take. The next best economical Xw-30 I can find the the Castrol SLX Powerflow 0w-30, only can get from Tan Chong SC at about RM200. The Torco 5w-30 cost about RM55~RM60/liter which works out to RM220~RM240/4 litre.

I will get Castrol 0W40 $129 @ Tesco..cheap cheap... haha !

Hi Astroboy, saw your blogspot about the microfilter DIY. Do you know what is the original 3M filter cost? Am I right to say cost is the only motivation for you to go for the non-original OEM parts? What is your thought about the filtration quality trade off by using none original? If the efficiency is not up to par, that may cause air conditioning system due to unclean air?

BTW, great post, I'm going to DIY during my next change.

There's obvious difference in built quality but double the price for original.

I replaced mine because I suffer blower intermittent failure during which unable to regulate blower speed. Some suspect due to clog microfilter. Yet.. I later found out the culprit was the blower motor.

The microfilter only filter external air.. and my wife very sensitive to external atmosphere odor, hence 99% of the time, we set to internal circulation which bypass the microfilter.. so how dirty can our microfilter gets? Food for thought.

My Angel eye/corona lights on the driver side was malfunctioning and went to change it.

RM180 for the bulb plus holder
RM30 for labour

Personally i felt the bulb was very expensive and I should have sourced the parts myself. Could have done its easily for around RM100 only instead. sob sob

I had always thot that the oil change interval is at 25km but AB staff recently told me it should be 10km. I did asked him why do BMW changed the oil at 25km during service warranty then? No answer. I am lucky I changed mine at 10/15km thinking that I am doing it better than required.
Anyway, just done the oil change service at AB yesterday (95km) and the bill comes up to RM773.20. The breakdown:
1- Engine oil service - RM45
2- Service standard scope - RM30 (dont know whats this for)
3- Oil filter - RM66.27
4- Vehicle diagnosis - RM60.00
5- Windshiled cleaner - RM11.31
6- ShellHelix 5w30 6.5ltr -RM552.50 (must be the most expensive oil@ RM85 per ltr)
7- Tax - RM8.10

Basically labour RM135, parts RM77.58 and oil RM552.50. I also asked abt alignment which he said would cost RM400++ as well as brakepads
RM600++ front and RM400++ rear. Rear lights would cost RM1052.00. Its expensive, I know, which brings me to the next part. Anybody knows a good place for alignment, o'gnal/OEM rear light and brakepads/sensor would be much appreciated.

Muhaimin n Astroboy, great info.

8 Dec 2012

My AC kaput and damage was:

1. AC Cooling coil - 1750.00
2. Expansion valve - 265.00
3. Blower Motor with Regulator - 880

all parts original. Is this reasonable?

Also did some maintenance and change tyres:
1- Michelin PS3 - RM650 each
2- Rim bengkok - RM75 each
3- Alignment and balancing free but the co quoted RM110
4- Change rear turn/brake light - RM650 each. Bought from a reliable sparepart dealer plus service RM15 at autobac.

....heard that problem a lot...the first time ive got changed the whole light under warranty....now happened again...got temporarily fixed but have to sent in to check on the wiring....bzbz maybe sent in when free...2) aircond not cold, changed evaporator last mth. Today sauna in car ....half way the blower shutsdown suddenly...darn have to sent in on monday.....bmw 323i......

Got my bulbs from Bavarian Auto for RM48 each(H8). Changed myself according to the manual but its pretty tricky due to the small space.
