"Brake Light circuit" > check owner's manual & "Tail light fail" in the E36 are common complaints because of wear and tear.some forummers here have said it's because of loose bulb contact with socket and suggested soldering more lead to contact point. This is one cause. another is use of bulbs with the wrong wattage. The Bimmer elecronics are sensitive to types of bulbs used and OEM bulbs must be chosen carefully.I realised my other mechanic had installed tail bulbs that were too bright/hot and incompatible, causing them to blow, hence the error message. The "Brake Light circuit" error was because of a faulty brake light switch, which is located above the foot brake. Changing to correct bulbs and replacing the switch have resolved the problem.
