Can the oil separator issue be detected thru diagnostic?

In my e39 case there were no specific errors but the symptoms was air flow rate frequently on the high side >19kg/hr, sometimes 21kg/hr when idle.

Replaced the MAF with a cap ayam one, the reading still same.

When replaced the oil separator only then came down to ~17kg/hr.

I have this issue before but i think is not the oil separator, it is ur camshaft sensor got problem. If oil separator got problem it sounds like a car taken of the air filter.
U try to use scanner to check whether the camshaft sensor still ok or not.

Camshaft sensor is very easy to change. i bought it from ebay less then RM100 including shipping fee. If u change in workshop then will charge u RM400++ due to the camshaft is selling RM300++ in Malaysia.

Thx weiboon..I also suspect the same thing because i changed my camshaft sensor 2 years back, but it was a used unit though. Took her to diagnose but found no error on camshaft sensor, but there were errors on DME. will get back to the workshop and diagnose again..btw the price u got on eBay is really cheap lor....

Reading (value) from a good MAF should be (1) Air-cond off - 11 kg/hr and (2) Air-cond on - 15 kg/hr. Cap ayam MAF won't work. You need to get Bosch MAF price about RM 600 for e39 525i M54.

Wasn't really sure if my MAF was faulty then so got a chap ayam one for comparison and the readings from INPA before and after was almost the same. BTW my E39 523i M52. Anyway will leave it there for time being.

If u confirmed that is camshaft sensor then buy the new sensor from ebay then change it urself. U can save alot of money.
U dont have bmw scanner or inpa scanner ? Most of us got the scanner. Then faster buy 1 scanner from Jarance..............hehehhehehhe
My e39 got error in DME then click it in then show me camshaft sensor is out then i just change the camshaft sensor then no more error on camshaft sensor. My symptom same with ur symptom.

I am not sure how much the labour charges for oil separator alone as I was billed lump sum of 650 (labour) for a lot of parts changes.

I just changed my fan belt cost RM195 and Oil separator cost RM800.
If the oil separator and the carbon fibre hosts got problem then your car might not good in acceleration.

wow...mine's an m52 engine and my ccv/oil separator costs rm242/-.just the separator without hoses.for m52 got 2 hoses only compared to m54...got 4 i think and the oil separator osso not the same....maybe that's why expensive..

My e39 is using the oil separator which is same with M54 oil separator. I have opened my oil oil separator and found that alot of sand stucked inside the oil separator and blocked the air flow. Then it will cause the hoses attached flat and might cause the hoses leak due to the less air at outlet. That is why need to replace all the hoses at the same time.

Where is the shop and what is the name of the shop ?

Just fixed and upgraded a few things on my E39:

Replaced wiper washer pump and hoses = RM350
Swapped the original halogen headlights to Xenon (Philips retrofit kit) = RM1,200
Replaced the MID with a brand new unit = RM2,800

When my bank account recovers next month, I'll be doing a few more upgrades to my car:

Fix the pixels on the instrument cluster
Source and replace standard rims with 18' staggered BBS
Touch up paintwork (picked up some stonechips and scratches on front bumper and rear fender)

BMW's. A passionate but expensive hobby! :D lol

Why the need for a new MID unit?

The original MID was behaving erratically.
The display panel loses pixels if I leave the car unattended to longer than a day (since I have 2 cars, I alternate between them).
And when I drive over rough roads, sometimes the MID blanks out completely. I actually have to tap on it to get it working again.
Got varying quotes to fix the problem. Some quoted RM600. Others said a recon unit would be better. One offered me a 2nd hand unit for exchange at RM1,500.
But when I found out a new unit costs just 1k more, I decided to swap for a new one instead. At least I know for sure it won't be acting up again anytime soon...
