Into my 2nd month with my 2003 525i, and they weren't kidding when they said even the best E39's will need some TLC and $$$ to get them back into shape. Just to share, I racked up the following in the last 8 weeks:

(1) Fuel float sensor (left & right units) & hose clip = RM952.00
(2) Full oil service, software update + gearbox flush & refill = RM2,260
(3) Replace front left sill plate (original had cracked and literally disintegrated) = RM 195.00
(4) Replace engine mounting (2) = RM RM390.00
(5) Replace gearbox mounting (2) = RM136.00

Items to be done at the next service:

(1) Replace valve lifters (all 24 of them *gulp*)
(2) Replace driveshaft main bearing
(3) Service gearbox valve body
(4) Check VANOS unit and replace seals if required.

An expensive hobby, having an E39, but still...every time I start her up and take a drive, I know it's all worth it ;)

Ah Wai's @ M Motor Garage.
A friend who runs a 00' 528i recommended him to me.

rpmnut,

What's up with your gearbox valve body...that you need to service it? Or you mean check & replace the solenoid actuators on it?

The gearshift is occasionally jerky, with the gearbox sometimes hunting between 2nd and 3rd gear especially on part-throttle openings. The guys suspect it's something in the valve body that's worn out. You reckon it's something else?

Mine got this 'Trans-safe-mode' on the dash one day when starting engine.. slowly drive to Kayu Ara to get it diagnosed and Crankshaft sensor is the culprit @ RM350..

Crankshaft sensor = Camshaft position sensor?

Are they same sensor?

no la bro.....crankshaft sensor at the front near the thermostat housing and camshft sensor near the oil filter housing

How does the crankshaft sensor affect the gearbox? They appear to be two completely different systems....

According to the mech few sensors if faulty will trigger that message as a precaution so as to protect gearbox from potential damage.. (?)

Hello to all the Masters, i own a E39 year 2001. For a while now, my car feels a little jerky like engine mistimed when it climbs hill or when it tries accelerating back after negotiating a corner n slowing down. Foreman has donesome trial n error things which causes me quite a sum. 1) looking at the gearbox, servicing it, change oil and housing connectors. 2) changing long shaft.
3) changing rear lower n upper arm which he claims may be givng way due to old age. Lately, he diagnosed it as faulty TORQUE CONVERTOR. He changed a re-cond one which turns out to be even worse than its original one but the symptom is exactly the same. I could be wrong but of all he has done, i felt this significantly affects the car n hopes that this is the real problem. If it is, what can i do?
1. Can it be repaired?
2. Should a another re-cond one be sourced?
3. Should a new one be bought?

Thanking the Masters out there in anticipation if anyone can offer some advice and the cost of ending this nightmare. thank you very much.

Better start with the cheaper diagnose first. It could be your propeler/long shaft or the coupling (gearbox will give a different telltale). Shaft is expensive if new, it can be recond though for a few hundred only, result wise depends, you can get lucky the first time or it needs to be align and balance again.

Dear All Masters,

Thank u forall the valuable advice. Foreman offered to rebuild the torque convertor and if it is not succesful, there will be no charge and i wud probably move on fm there.
