It seems there are quite a number of newbies who recently purchased this model.Having been a newbie owner myself previously, and having learnt many things the hard way, I thought I'd start this thread for the experienced sifus out there to share the benefit of their experience w the rest of us...The 328 is a powerful car. For many of us, it is quite a large step up from our previous cars. There are many issues specific to this model which i wish someone else had told me earlier...So, let me get the ball rolling...1. First impressionLots of torque! Unbelievable!2. Next impressionHmm.... how do i make it PERFECT?3. The mod startsRims! Tires! Join the Car Wax shop as lifetime member!4. PerformanceSuspension, shocks, air filter....5. HousekeepingAircond sucks! Overhaul the whole system... dashboard down job...6. Fuel consumptionOhmygod.... its got such an appetite for petrol....That's just some thoughts I have, looking back on two years of owning it.Unofficial instruction manual for beginners...1. Mandatory refurbishmentAll the bushes, ball joints, wheel bearing, BRAKE PADS etc. generally has got to go.. have it checked, and replace them if in any doubt at all. Trust me, this will actually save you money in the long run2. TiresIf you got this car, no matter what u think or say, YOU ARE GOING TO PUSH IT... so get the best tire you can afford... or rather, YOU CAN'T AFFORD NOT TO GET GOOD TIRES.... ask around, plenty of advice out there... regular choices Continental Sport Contact (CSC) II, Michelin PS2, etc.. I'm a tire moron, so my basis is very simple... it's got to be EXPENSIVE, and EUROPEAN... and don't forget, get the right size... some people like to run on smaller size in front, bigger size at the back... check ur owner's manual...3. SuspensionThe standard suspension is too soft and therefore DANGEROUS.... took the new e90 for a spin yesterday, almost toppled it going round a highway exit ramp... salesman asked "Can u check if the EBD lights came on?"...dude! I'm busy keeping four wheels on the road and keeping us alive... will check those lights for you when my balls are no longer blocking my eye sockets, ok? And that was only on a two litre engine... you get the picture... do yourself a BIG favour, and change the suspension... eibach, H&R springs, bilstein, Koni shocks, they are all a massive improvement over the standard set up4. ARBBest money you will ever spend on your car, goes together with item 3 above. Why? They will improve your car's handling so that you can concentrate on managing your understeer/oversteer round bends instead of wondering whether you can corner safely on two tires...5. Chassis stiffeningFoaming... worked for me... enuf said... other choices, x-brace, struts brace... in the works.... your car can never be too tight... mmmm... slurp.... damn...! tight things are God's most magnificent creations... tight short pants, tight thong, tight t-shirt, and most of all a tight, tight chassis and suspension....6. Voltage stabilizer and earthingI'm a total anti-gimmick guys, and a total sceptic.... but this stuff works! Our 328's are getting on in age, esp it's electrical and electronics.... this will clean up the current and give you better performance on all things running on battery power, including better ignition, radio/cd player (saved me a lot of money on ICE! standard system sounds much better now!), and best of all, better low-end TORQUE! slurp slurp! Am running two in parallel... This gets my vote as the ALL TIME BEST MOD in the Sub 1K Category7. Engine and fuel injection cleaningImagine an oven used for baking day in and day out without ever being cleaned.... how efficient would the oven be all clogged up by carbon? Get some reliable products and clean both your engine and your fuel injectors regularly... you'll be amazed at the rejuvenated youth in your engine... Winner, Best Mod, sub RM100 categorythat's all i can think of for now...i hand the ball over to my fellow 328 owners to share whatever they like...

Another thing to watch out for...

the 328 has got plenty of torque, which means the autobox typically gives up and dies around 150k km onwards... mine lasted until 190k km before it succumbed to the inevitable...

so, take good care of your slushbox, flush regularly... a rebuild costs around RM5k... a new one, at today's euro rates, around RM15-20k....

I agree, lot's of TORQUE. I took my car last week. It's fantastic. Previous owner did all the mods. The mods done so far that I can remember from what i was told and see is :

- Original full M3 bodykit with side mirrors
- Breyton 17" rims(3" deep dish)
- Koni + Eibach(not sure spring height but my rear fender covers the tire nearly 3/4)
- K&N Filter
- Superchip
- Breyton rear muffler
- AC part

I couldn't stop driving the car..but now since you've mentioned that the gearbox will give way at about 150,000km...mine is now 152,000km..what are the signs that i should look for?

Congratulations, Musclehedz.

Sounds like you get a car with lots of mods already as a bonus... that's great! If you add up the cost of all those mods when new, you'll be surprised how much the previous owner has already spent on the car...

when you get a chance, do a dyno test to see what's the horsepower produced by the performance mods, namely the K&N airfilter, Breyton exhaust, and Superchips... and compare w the standard spec...

Also check out whether the previous owner has installed any antiroll bar... he might have, otherwise the car will roll excessively on standard...

Since your mileage is already 152,000 km, these are the things to watch out for...

1. Slow to engage Reverse - it takes a couple of seconds for Reverse gear to bite
2. Occassional 'kick' when shifting up under certain rpms (especially when you release the throttle after excelerating under load)
3. Gear service light comes on
4. increased fuel consumption due to gear slipping (I always monitor my fuel consumption, a sure sign if something is wrong w your engine or drive train if it goes up...)

Things to do to prolong the life of your gearbox...
1. Avoid sudden impact-type of stress to the box; shift into N, pause, before shifting from D to R, R to D, R to P, etc, avoid flooring the pedal from stationary, better to build up speed smoothly, avoid shifting into gear during high rpm..
2. Regular maintenance and gearbox oil change

What year is your model? I think 97, maybe 98, judging from the mileage...
At this age (latest model is 98/99 anyways), just like mine, the engine will have accumulated some carbon deposits already. You will benefit from a thorough engine and fuel injector cleaning. check out voltage stabilizers and earthing cables as well... this really cleans up the current, giving you bettter idling, and more responsive torque, to name but a few benefits... People who drive my car can't believe that it's almost 200,000 km on the mileage... very torquey and smooth and quiet...

Other things to watch out for...
- steering rack - your car should track straight and true at top speed, if not, your steering is too loose, also check for leaks, steering racks are all recond now, about 2k...
- aircond - about time for the cooling coil and compressor to give up, dashboard down job, a few thousand...
- roof lining.... if the previous owner has not done this, it will droop on you soon... but simple job, coupla hundred bucks...

Let me know if you have any other queries on this model... will be glad to share if i've encountered it before...

Lastly...

WELCOME TO THE PARTY B) B) B)

Lee, Have a query.... where is the "voltage stabilizers and earthing cables" and how to check if they are OK? BTW, mine's only a 318 (so sorry to hijack)

Thanks Lee,

Yes, the previous owner spent a lot of money on the mods and accessories. He even gave me the ICE with Kickers,Alpine, etc..

I think I will take the car for a dyno. Where do I get the standard specs to compare it with? I maxed out the car yesterday all the way to 240km/h

As for the antiroll bars, its an M3 unit i think even with the bushings and all. I took the car on sharp and high speed corners, the car stuck to the corner like glue and i could not feel any body roll at all.

I've oberved and tried out the things to look out for on the gearbox just only, and no, they don't have any sign of the symptoms that you've mentioned though. I'm guilty of flooring the accelerator from standstills at traffic lights :D

Mine is a early 1996. I saw a few very thick earthing cable on few places, is that standard or modified?

As for the air cond, its quite cold though. Roof lining previous owner also changed it recently and rewrapped the steering leather as well.

Only thing now I want to do is a very very good and super black and glossy paint job :D Got any suggestions of painters?

I posted up my Speedworks dyno chart but can't track it down. Will hunt for it and put it up soon.

Congratulations in owning a 328i.
I also recently treated myself to a 328i Cabrio.
Yes the torque is strong. Sometime when i am not attentive, it pins me to my seat, almost wrenching my head off my neck!!
But my car inherited the dreaded scuttle shakes.
Nevertheless, driving up to Camerons, Genting, Penang, or after work from Shah Alam to KL in the evenings is great, with all that power & torque.

I have also been advised to be wary of the geabox condition, so i intend to change oil every other engine ol service.

btw, can anyone tell me, what is the actual height for my car? I find it very low and suspect it has been lowered before. Hopefully, i can do something before I crush my exhaust system.

Cheers!

The crappiest ownership experience of this car is actually trying to find a buyer. Officially off the market now, but all reasonable offers considered!

wkwoo69,
I didn't know u were wanting to sell your car :(
But what do u intend to get after u eventually sell it? :D

Mr Lee,

Excellent car dude..... and I must say the driver is pretty good as well.....capable of inducing WTF and OMG type sensations to any who dare go onboard the light blue monster :D

Agreed that the first thing you'll feel is the torque especially at the bottom end. Then the top speed. However, I do feel the acceleration/gearchange is less smooth compared to E46 328. But the power must be more or less the same.
On the strong torque, I really must ease off the throttle otherwise I'll be pin down on my seat like ccl68 mentioned. My only concern is that the power delivery should be smoother...

c-square,

no worries about hijack, always happy to help.

the standard car does not come w voltage stabiliser, and it uses the car body to earth the electrical circuits.

over time, this becomes less effective as both the car and the wiring age.

a voltage stabiliser passes the current through some batteries (looks like batteries anyhow), and what comes out is a very clean current, and anything in your car running on current (that includes your spark plugs!) will be smoother and more efficient... same concept as high end home hi fi...

the earth cable is an ultra low-impedance cable designed to earth the system more efficiently... also helps with cleaning up the current....

worked wonders for me (in fact, i installed two voltage stabl is parallel..)

check it out, and let me know how it goes...

Lucky you... sounds like the previous owner has really sorted out the car...

Painting is highly subjective, and depends on how much you want to spend., i can recommend a painter for each budget... just let me know... can spend anything between RM2k+ (not recommended) to RM4-5k+... depending on how fussy you want the painter to be...

I think the standard car does not have earthing cables, so yours is probably modified... any bonus for you :yes!:

"High speed corners.. stuck like glue..."

Careful... careful... always remember, safety first....

A word of friendly advice... go find a place where you can SAFELY explore the limits of your car (like Sepang trackday, for eg.) ... I recommend spinning the rear out a few times so you'll know what signs to watch out for that it is approaching its handling limits, and LEARN TO COUNTERSTEER!

Your car is a DANGEROUS machine if handled incorrectly... so... please be careful... :eek:k:

Forgive me if i sound too grandmotherly above,... got a few close calls before... would not like the same to happen to others... and I've gone through performance driving course before..

MEanwhile, enjoy your new baby... and lets get together one of these days and swap notes... cheers!

The scuttle shake is inevitable, i suppose, for a cabrio...

you might wanna consider foaming, to further strengthen the chassis..

I remember a conversation about driving at 230++ km/h and TAKING YOUR HANDS OFF THE STEERING WHEEL!!

Lee! You're the MAN!
