Hey there,

I agree with Initial M, for those whom just start step in "Working World". Local car is the right choice for you. Make sure it's brand new. It can prevent you from having headache for about 5 years by just maintaining the scheduled services. Try to save money within this period and I can assure you grab E46 pre-facelift by year 2012 approximately with E36 current price.

P/s : The negative point is you can't join our TT for next 5 years :) Joke only !!

aiyaa..
wait for 2 or 5 years is quite long huh....

a kancil for me is too small, i'm 1.77m n 100kg guy...

matasura,

I've read your thread with great interest and it is really a pleasure to know that there are people out there who share our passion. I was in a similar situation two years ago so allow me to share my experience with you. As much as I would love to have another addition to the club, I have no wish for you to burn yourself in the process.

Let's be honest about this, being as passionate as you are about the car means you're probably not going to buy one and then just drive around in it. First you'll itch for the bodykits, then the rims, then the ICE...the list is endless. So first things first, it's the car you're going to buy. Finding a good E36 is dificult enough, I myself spent half a year just searching for the right one. Finding one already fitted with the mods you want (bodykit, rims, etc) is a big bonus, as the value those adds to the car is nowhere near the price of you buying all of those yourself. I found mine with the original M3 kit with matching 17" M3 rims.

After finding the car, make sure you know a good, reliable mechanic before you purchase it. Make no mistake, this car WILL suck your blood but if you already have a good mechanic lined up....it will be through a straw and not a fire hose. It will make your ownership much less painful in terms of RM expenditure.

When you got your car, replace EVERYTHING that needs replacing. Keep in mind it will be at least 10 yrs old. Once I got mine, I spent close to RM 6k just replacing parts. Even though there was nothing wrong with the radiator, I ripped it out and replaced it nonetheless as it is 10 yrs nd a common troublespot. Make sure you get good rubbers too (Tyres), it's the only thing thats going to keep you on the road and if you say you bought an E36 just to drive slowly everywhere...:thefinger: . I know you're lying. The ICE system in my car was totally gone so I spent another 4k setting it all up again. So that's RM 10k right after I got the car. But think of it as buying a 50k car instead of 40k (If you bought it at 40k).

Yes, I know it's a little steep but it is so necessary. Otherwise I'd advise you against getting it. It's been two years now and, touch wood, it's not given me any problems and every single drive has been fantastic. You won't jump on the difference right away. I drove my car for 2 years then I had to suddenly drive my wife's Iswara somewhere and...oh my god, I realise how good it is once I'm not in it anymore.

Keep at least 10k in the bank for emergencies and every month set aside a couple of hundred for your car. You might not need it if you're lucky but let's not gamble.

Like you I'm from Penang but I'm not working in KL. I'm also in my twenties and graduated from a local uni a few years ago. This E36 325, is my first car. And I think I'm prouder of my car than most. I'm the only one among the guys in my office who bought a 2nd hand car, and over 10 yrs to boot. In the past 2 years, there has been at least 4 new Myvis in the office basement carpark. 6 Cities, a couple of Vioses, a number of protons and some other makes, most of them under 100k. So in the cafe we can talk and discuss on who's car gets the best mileage, has the most space and is cheapest to maintain. And I can join in but I will be hard pressed not to finish last. But when it's a question of which is the baddest car in the lot....it's always that 12 year old car in the corner of the carpark.

P.S. - Careful when you test drive your E36s. Don't press that 'S' button. I gatal tekan it and now...I'm owning the car. It destroys all rational thinking in the male brain.

Dear Mat,

You are still young, so take your time...in a few years you may even afford a E46.

I graduated 12 years ago. For the first year I took a bus to work!

I saved up enough money to put a down payment on a 11 year old Mitsubishi Tredia 1.4(M). That car served me for 4.5 yrs, I hardly spent much on maintainance.

I then bought a new Waja ( I took 50% loan) and used it for 2.5 yrs, ( the Waja is now used by my wife and has been fully paid up).

I then got myself an E30.....it was 15 yrs old and costed me RM26k. I used it for 4 yrs and spent RM15k on maintainance in those 4 yrs and sold it recently .

As you would have read I only recently got myself a 1995 E36 325i for RM40k....this is after 12 yrs of working. I got it cash so I have money for repairs. Todate I have spent a further RM20k (that's RM10k over my initial budget) on the car and "touch wood" it has not had any problems in the last 3 months, so I guess it has been worth it. My only regret...not getting a 328 but thats anor story.

You see bimmers are truly GREAT cars as they can really last BUT it has to be taken care of....this entails spending money, so honestly unless you can afford it , my advise is put off you purchase for a few yrs, you still have a lot of time.

When you are financially more stable, then by all means get yourself a UDM. Its pointless to struggle just to own a car. To enjoy it ur ownership experience has to be as painless as possible.

hi anxious,

You're lucky to own 325 than 328. Actually 325 easy to maintain than 328. 328 usually using almunium head which give you high possibility to have problem but 325 still used cast iron that much stronger. From my specialist mech, 325 engine can be improve more powerfull than 328 and the top speed can reach 260 km/h.

Well said Anxious!! Owning a UDM is one thing, maintaining the UDM is another thing! The word is PASSION~~

choosing is never really easy... myvi is just a car. bmw is a bmw. the factor is always money. you decide what you will decide. i will just share my experience.

for the super rich bmw might be just a car as well. for me it's like love.

love makes you do all the crazy thing and you won't care.
i'm not rich but i get along just fine, barely sometimes!!! i know i'm better off using a kancil or myvi. there would be a lot of cash to spare if i did. but i love bmw especially MY bmw.

when i'm away from it for a few days, the first thing i do when i got home is to start the engine and have a quick drive around. when i'm stressed i take it to the highway. when i'm bored i wash it, wax it, polish it.

i have dream about it. i also have nightmares.

just like love i'm driven by it. i'm always thinking about how do i earn more so i can enjoy my bmw more. i'm focused at work. always desiring to perform. i'm always aiming high. i'm not complacent. never satisfied. not yet.

my e36 drives me on the road and in my life. my aim is to be able to own a brand new bmw one day. and i will. i know i will.

i'm getting married next year, and am already planning my children's future. i am 29.

coming from a poor family doesn't mean you have to stay in poverty.
find your love and let it drives you.
if your heart is set on a bmw, don't fret if you can't have it now. aim to have one in the future.
let that "future" bmw drives you "now". let your myvi takes you to your bmw.
in my case, my current e36 drives me to the new 3 series in the future. and i'm enjoying every moment of it.

just remember that love is blind but your mind will show you the right one.

thanks to my dad!

......this guy is REALLY crazy towards BMW. Actually im like him also... no... no.......
no....HE IS LIKE ME also

since it is almost end of the year, i'm thinking of getting a myvi first...
maybe in 2 or 3 years, i'll get my dream car!

Good for you! It will never be too late to drive a UDM. But make sure you do!

All the best!

be like me la bro, from grad and first job..... stick to brand new car. be it wira, waja, sentra or innova. bought my own car only after 9 years of working..... initially when started working, naik bas, pakai motor (was even a superbiker) before......

after 11 years of working and 5 figures of salary, then only i got my UDM..... Ultimate indeed! But like someone's dream..... dreaming of buying a brand new UDM someday..... but you're gonna need all the dough to keep the relationship with your UDM.....

so, go and develop your career first, get a stable (well paying) income and then mess around with a UDM..... she's like a mistress you know...... even my wife is jealous of my UDM. Lebih gosok UDM dari bini......

another, stick to brand new cars if you can....
