Bro, my 1993 E36 318 auto is up for sale. I've done practically everything to keep the car going. Suspensions, top overhauls, bearings.. Cost me >6K already. If you interested, pm me. I sell cheap2 one. Red hot colour with pretty neat interior (red also).

Satisfaction and safety comes with a higher maintenance. If you are driving an E36, just keep aside 5k+ in the bank, as a measure if anything goes wrong, that should be sufficient for repair. The most I believe you will spend on the car for repairs is, when you initially purchase it.

After that if you service the car regularly (every 10,000km), drive it like a UDM, take care of it, such as.. drive slowly over speed breakers, avoid deep dirty bumps, the shocks and suspension should give more life. If you have auto gearbox and fiddle with the sports/performance mode too much, it might cost you expensive repairs, since old auto gearboxes tend to die after 150,000km typically and need to rebuild them. Manual gearboxes are okay, will not cost you that much, and you can also show off a little in front of cars such as civics and accords, however manuals are rarer to find. :)
