I'm going to close this useless rambling with a quote from my mom-in-law

"Buy car sure lose money. So better buy car you like so even if you die, you'll die with a smile"

Your mum-in-law is a very wise woman.

:D

It looks like a majority is dissuading you (for frank and sincere intentions) from getting the Bimmer at least for now, and that those points put forward are indeed valid and wise considering the circumstances that you are in. Most importantly is to get your priorities right before thinking of spending a sizeable chunk of your disposal income on cars. Sure a monthly salary may be able to get you the e36 318i but with not much left to meet your other expenses for necessities.

Came across an article in "Supercars" and thought it was quite appropriate here....
Quote*(Who doesn't dream of owning a BMW, Mercedes, RR or supercars like a Ferrari, Porsche or Lamborghini? Who doesn't want to have a Ferrari Testa Rossa or a Porsche 911 Turbo in his garage? Who doesn't want to spend his weekends driving his Ferrari 328 GTB or a Porsche 928 GTS? Who doesn't want to visit friends, showing up in a Ferrari 575M or a Porsche Boxster? It is the childhood dream of virtually every man to own and get behind the wheels of these cars. It is a dream that really doesn't go away and will inspire and push us to work towards achieving such goals.

The point here is that whilst you should pursue your dream and get a Bimmer, you should not do it at the expense of other more important priorities. Probably it makes sense to delay the ownership of your dream car for a couple of years (you are still young and I believe have the ability to very quickly earn larger pay packet) until your finances are more robust. Delaying in realising your dream car doesn't mean you are a lesser man but only simply mean you are responsible person.

Think about it, bro and make a wise and informed decision.

Cheers

Very well said. I've read somewhere that most Lamborghini owners actually keeps the car for a few years only. They just wanted to go through life teling peole I had a Lamborghni.

Having siad that, u r probally totally confused with what we are trying to tell you, what the heck, we only live once, follow your heart.

12 years old E36 ......unless you have rm500-rm600 per month to spare for maintainance..always use thid rule

RM800 - RM1k monthly installment
RM500 maintainance ( you'll need this.trust me )
Petrol / parking / touch n go ..excluded

I have experience owning a 1990 E34 with my salary close to RM3k back then and still have to 'tapaww' my wife hard earned marney just to get the tank run properly...and look good on my eyes. And that tank consumed all the yearly car maintance of 8k....in the middle of the year..and I still have 6 months to go without a cent in car allowance :)

Sold the tank already and now drive Proton Saga. RM60 of today's petrol and can get close to 400km.......and my previous E34 tank consumed 70 litres of petrol for a mere 420km in mileage.

My advise are, start saving more money and eye for newer E36, 1999 318i or 1996 318iS ( DOHC )..........or if you want to experience the ultimate wallet bleeding machine .... 1997 E36 328i...nowdays only cost rm55k with 60k loan...and you can extra 5k :)

Now....worrying the 1997/1998 economy meltdown repeated again, I'll rather use a cash car and start saving for the rainy days ahead ....

Still, I always spend my Sunday morning go to PJ Sunday Sales to look for some good condition of 97' E36 328i....

Guys, I am new here and already purchased a E46 year 2000. But looking at the reply you guys giving our friend here, I am really wondering now if I made the right decision to get the E46, which I have just signed all the document this afternoon.

donnyteo, welcome to the forum. Please introduce yourself in the Newbies sectioin.

As for your concern, we advised based on his mentioned salary and buy an 11year old car. It's common to spend some money at the initial stage to replace the wear and tear items, after that, it'll bethe routine maintenance.
As for your 6 year old ride, there'll be less wear and tear items to be replaced but never the less, certain items would need replacement as well due to daily usage and age. There are some information which u may find useful regarding the maintenance of the car ie gearbox, power steering, power window, engine oil.
take care of the engine and gearbox first before getting racunned with the bodykits and wat not... :p

cheers

Don't think like that lah

All we are saying is that you better allocate some money above the monthly instalment for maintenance. a >200K car (new) still need a 200k car parts regardless of whether you pay less than 100K for second hand.

Anyway, a 2000 e46, unless very high mileage still got plenty of life before you need to start changing major parts.

Do u mean RM500 for maintanence monthly or every 5000km.

What if I buy this BMW from a BMW mechanic. Maybe he have change the wear and tear parts.

thread starter,

i think u got a lot of response here due to your current earning. i wudn't do it if i were you, but u seem to have set your mind to get the E36. Bar any major repair needed (that g/box hilited by Fab is a good example), running cost wud still be painful, the auto 318i is not actually a fuel economy car....pls set aside ~RM400-500 for petrol every month

go ahead la...buy the car. share us your story later ok?

sebelum hari kiamat datang, enjoylah sepuas puasnya. kalau mampu, beli BMW! kalau teragak agak, beli waja. kalau kaki boros, beli kancil!
duit anda, pilihan anda! pikir masak masak, mampukah saya, sanggupkah saya maintain? kereta lama, mesti kena maintain. kereta baru, maintainence free 3 tahun... duit extra boleh buat make-up!

This is my experience when I first got my e30/m40 318i close to eight years, a month after I use it and this is one in a million and can happen to any car by bad luck, while driving at the north south h/way all of a sudden my car died at 120km...pull to the side check fuel ok, electrical ok but can'nt start, call my man check and found one of my plugs lost its head well gone case, towed the car then found that one of my valve broke at the neck that hit the pistons and a big hole damage my top head too. I was quoted get ready 10K to overhaul, that time new in BMW worried and never mix and know anybody of this make so blur. at last look for a second hand engine and mine you m40 was not easy to get than and lastly lucky got one from Ipoh Road only one from Japan and cost me RM5500 so buy and all I can recall I spend nearly 7k. thats not all I have change my gearbox all because of the stupid boys bad workmanship, my wiring looms from the engine to the computer box can say all change except body. this is not to scare you but be prepared anything can happen to an old car and don't blame the earlier owner nobody knows what is inside.
Good luck.

2k monthly salary for a e36 is way too risky imho, unless you've putting in a high downpayment or just pay cash for a slightly older one and put aside a few hundred every month for maintenance.

in my case... that'll be my ol' lady e30!!! hahahahah

if u have the passion (& of course patience!!!) for udm...believe me... other cars won't compensate...
well, cost will always come into consideration... but if there's a will there will always be a WAY....

Read this topic with much interest.

If it is any comfort, note that I will be selling my 318 (slightly above 7 years) with a much heavy heart as maintenance is getting higher, such as wear and tear - now have booked for a new civic. Have to use the brains instead of the heart, bro.

I believe a ball park figure is not more than 25-33% of your gaji should go into car repayments and unless u can settle the loan within 3-5 yrs then better look for a more managable loan amt. i.e. get a cheaper car.

My two baht.

The problem with using the brain is that there are not much choices to choose from if you want something nice. Now that I am free of car loans, its hard to choose what next when the E46 starts to become costly to maintain. I swore never to take loans anymore a few years ago. The Jazz was the first achievement and from now, its the brain over the heart in my decisions...

Maybe when I am super loaded with kids all grown up and finished school, I'll end up getting something which tugs my heart :p

MY CHINAMAN OPINION: - With this salary, dont mix PASSION with PRESSURE.
Take time to build your career, look for biz opportunities, grow and be successful.
I was only driving a 10year old wira when my salary was 5K.
Now that i have a little to spare, i can easily enjoy my UDM financially mix with passion!
