E36 318i 1994 or New Waja Campro

For maintaining and 4-pot E36, I believe your salary should be 3k+ or above (regardless of loans you need to pay), that should be fine for yearly maintenance. However if you want to own a 4-pot E36 and live tension free, I believe 4k+ is suffice.

Try to get a manual if you are looking for lower fuel consumption. The auto gearbox is costly to repair, manual is a less headache and also cheaper. I can get 550-600km on my 318i, manual, it also depends how much light or heavy footed you are. Since I use my car for daily driving, and drive around 3000km monthly on an average, I spend RM400-500 on the fuel.

Keep in mind the latest E36's are also 10+ years old, so if the previous owner has kept good care of the car, most of the parts wont need replacing. Even after you replace, the parts do long last, sometimes the lifespan of 2nd hand bmw parts is more than brand new proton parts also, depending upon the condition of them.

However, when you buy an E36 you will normally spend 5k+ the first time on overhauling normal things like aircon, cooling system, brakes, any leaks, and also new tyres if needed. Check the suspension, shocks and gearbox of the car when you test drive it. Most of the cars the steering alignment is out, however depends upon previous owner, mine was fine. Another thing will be sometimes bushes, ball-joints or interior parts which might cause noise when driving on bumpy roads. Things like that are not major, and you can repair them later onwards.

So bare in mind these are the general things you need to take care off, apart from servicing the car. The engine oil for 318i costs around RM300. Other things in service will be: gearbox oil, power steering fluid, brake oil, fuel filter, oil filter etc.

Obviously, thread starter has fallen in love with the BM already...

It's not difficult to understand really, same case with me when I was seriously contemplating getting my E34.

With regards to the salary and you're about to be married soon, let's say the element of risk is always there financially. There is no escaping this fact. I got mine 3 years ago, with a slightly higher salary but no other commitments. So far no regrets as the car has been almost bullet proof, but the risk was there when I put the money down.

If you're intent on the BM and trying to find the posts which are in favour of getting the BM, it's best to go for it...though please do make sure the car isn't a problematic one. Full service records, have a full 'check up', especially the heavy metal parts...engine, gearbox, fuel pumps, electronics (especially), beltings. if the car hasn't been trouble free, then best steer clear of the car. Repairs can seriosuly make you cry down the road, this model you're looking for isn't one of the most reliable cars BMW has ever made and many posters here can back me up on that.

If you have around rm10000k in the bank now as a backup for the car, then go for the BM. No point going for a car you don't like and having a sad face while driving it all the time.

Oh, and would like you to rethink your other option...Waja - Campro? Really? If you're not getting a BMW, at least get a good car...like a used Myvi. Or one of the Mitsubishi powered protons...7 or 8 years old...they're still more proven than..."Campro". Plus dirt cheap spare parts as well. Buying a brand new Msian made car isn't too advisable me thinks. Just IMHO (In my humble opinion)

I wud say anybody can afford to buy used BMW but not that many can tahan the maintenance.

I assume u are still young bro. Just planning to get married. Bear in mind in few months to come your wife will get pregnant/give birth. What if your gear box kaput when she's busy delivering. Where to dump your money first? Or another scenario, imagine her standing by the road side (with your small innocent baby) while you busy calling for the tow truck to tow your BM.

Sorry for painting the worst scenario. Go Proton.

Go Proton - Maybe worst than worst case scenario!!

Go Perodua.

I bought a '97 328i in Jan. So far spend around 5k fixing things. I can sense there is more to come. Fortunately I can afford it.
So considering your financial condition DONT go for BMW or Waja even. I think MyVi is a good car to own.

My advice, go for other top priorities first...your future family, a house..blah blah...

bmw later lah...the e36 will still be in the market in another 5-10 yrs, or even more...don't worry. You'll get one soon.

I totally agree with these Bros on this thread especially this page where everyone is asking you to 'wear your hat according to your size'. Be PRACTICAL.

Obviously u wouldn't want to end up as an empty vessel that makes the most sound.

I rather have people giving praises i.e. 'wow, drive Myvi but damn ambitious, practical. Sure one day drive Big car' THAN 'Cheh, berlagak only this kiddo..minimal salary but wants to show he is doing well!'

Which do u prefer? Obviously not the 2nd line rite? :smokin:

True, there will always be a time in life when you are financially stable to drive European cars, even though car taxes of foreign cars in Malaysia are mean.

Buying a second hand bmw is not expensive, however the maintenance sometime is. Just make sure you have an extra 5k+ in the bank just as a measure, if anything goes wrong. Considering the new 5 F-series is coming out and due launch in Malaysia, the price for E39 I suspect is also gonna go down soon. :)

If you can afford the maintenance, go for it, after all a UDM is a UDM. They are safer than most cars out there on the road. Seeing accidents now a days, sometimes I realize why proton wants to eat peoples money and at the same time NOT provide satisfactory quality or safety in their automobiles.

I haven't read the other posts coz no time but I hate to say this but don't get the e36.. it is a fact of life and i would not like to see you in debts.. bad debts! even if I don't know you but I feel for you...build your life first and your family.. In my humble opinion, you should get the Perodua MyVii.. It is more comfy than the Waja..It is of much better build.. It is economical.. RM65 gets you 430kms of town driving. Not much maintenance hassle. 5 years warranty. It is not too big. It is not too small. It seats 5 adults quite comfortably. Its second hand value is better because of demand. I bought one for my niece and it was a 3 month waiting period! I have a Waja as well and i can tell you that the MyVii is better IMHO. Plus u dont have to fork out 10k d/p.. Since interest is about 4% at the most now, just take max loan and put that 10k in ASB or something like that gives you about 10% interest or thereabouts. Remember, cash is king..not cars... so, save as much as u can bro.. just my 2 kupang opinion .. bear in mind, u might 'miss' this chance of the E36 but hey maybe u'll get e46 or e90 in the future..who knows!! good luck...
