Closing in on 10k miles on the clock....

I am learning more about the car's characteristics...I feel this car is set up more as an autobahn cruiser/stormer than a backroad carver. I find this car really comes into its elements at steady high-speed cruise. It just gobbles up miles effortlessly and competently. At speed, everything starts to make sense...the firm yet compliant ride, the seat design, the steering feel/ratio, the transmission even those darn RFTs....it's pretty darn good!! Even the dash layout/design is set up for this, true it lacks the sporty and intimate cockpit feel of the E46 but adter many miles/hours behind the wheel, you'd appreciate the airy expanse of the front cockpit and the minimalist design is more soothing.

On a tighter course, the E90's got a few things going against it (to make it short of perfection). Its weight, dimensions and refinement. Here, I find the E46 is livelier and lighter on its feet...especially in tight autocross style courses/turns. I also find the E46 more communicative in steering, seat of pants and sounds. Don't get me wrong, the E90 is very competent especially with the sport suspension...it will take all types of corners with much speed and capabilities. And the steering feel is still best in class in weight and feedback. Also the 6-speed Step in DS mode picks up the revs of the N52 well enough. But I must concede that the E46 is a little bit more entertaining.

After 7 months of ownership, I still feel the magic of the car. The car is still a joy to drive long after the honeymoon is over. The exhaust and engine note has gotten louder (sportier) and the suspension has settled in and is a bit more compliant (a plus when tackling DC streets). I took the long scenic way to the office this morning: I took some curvy back roads on this fine autumn Friday morning. The air was crisp (OBC says 9 deg celcius), the moonroof was open, the AC and radio was off, the sky was blue and the sun was shining, highlighting the color of the leaves which has begun to turn. I left the car in DS as I snaked through the parkway and reveled at the exhaust note bouncing off the stonewalls/bridge. It was very nice :D

Problems? I have some new rattles for my SA to hunt and rectify (dreaded B-pillar clicking). I still need to monitor oil consumption but it is levelling off. The car is wearing well...still looks as good as the first day off the lot. New car smell has gone down though :(

I am doing the K&N drop-in filter thing, hopefully this weekend. Our filters are different, we use the flat-panel assembly here in the US while you guys have the cylindrical filter arrangement. (DIY: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4101)
The jury's still out on how much power/difference is attained with this mod, folks have reported a louder (more pleasant) intake sound and some have noted slightly improved response and fuel economy. We'll see. As far as I know, the K&N filter will not void warranty but if you're concerned you can always swap filters prior to bringing the car in for service. The filter swap will not register an error code.

yea i saw some diaghrams on the diff filters , the flatpanel ones are huge eh. while we in m'sia n the rest of the world gets the cylinder type of arrangement :D

if there is slight FC improvement im sure we all are up for it in a jiffy.
i reckon something like tat for a relatively new car is bout rm300-500?
checked in k&N's site there's a model out for the 320i i guess that'll do :D but for kancheong fella like me i guess i'll call the SA at AB glenmarie to confirm the void or not thing.

bout exterior mods i've seen some e90's on the road in KL with m-tech bodykits n acs rims already . look badass especially from the butt point of view coz of the rear apron . the all white onthe top signal like isalso available to install but quite pricey i heard bout 2800? or something . someone correct me if im wrong.

n i've noticed most e90s in the states has the orange bit in the front lights , havent seen any in kl , guess it's a US only thing? is it part of the light fixture which has a function or its just pure show no go?

the cockpit in the e90 is definitely more airy compared to the e46 , maybe its just me . makes a big difference especially when u're 6'1" tall. rear legroom is very good indeed that's the first thign that i tried when first viewing the car :D

and of course the typical m'sian test of strenght which is the slaming of doors :D
chooopp! ... :D approved ! haha

sgbuloh_e90:

lol your comments on slamming doors was funny....

Best to not call them lest they register your name in their systems as potential warranty violator lol, if you're curious, just buy a filter, install it and see how you like it. If you don't you can always sell it. Always replace with OEM filter before you bring the car in for service, just to be on the safe side. They will never know. FYI, I paid $40 shipped, for my filter but have not installed it yet. We have to remove the entire airbox assembly just to replace the filter. Looks to be a 35-45 minute job, and I am notoriously lazy lol.

The M-tech body kit is very nice, especially the rear bumper/apron. Really makes a difference. In fact some people in the US just prefer the rear bumper (which, for 2007 is available seperately). I think you are referring to OEM Blacklines taillights, its an OEM part. If I am not mistaken BMW AB is charging RM2,000 with installation. I'd see where you can buy the part cheaper as it is very easy to install by yourself. 10-15 minutes should do it.

Unfortunately, US E90s have the amber reflector built into the headlight. Very ugly. Its a requirement by the US Dept of Transportation, for visibility. You like the orange reflectors??? We can trade if you want lol.

The front cockpit space is quite generous in the E90. The rear is not bad, definitely bigger than some other competing cars, about par with the W203.

ai yoh.... dun worry la.....

my mileage is 4,800 km and i have been doing 220kmph few times!

Wah!! I've only done 1300 km but the engine does already feel smoother, or is that my imagination.

On another note, my 161 rims are coming finally, arranged with BMW to do the swap on Wednesday.

KL2DC, your posts are always informative and interesting. I for one truly appreciate the facts you give us. Eg, the characteristics of the E90 you describe are exactly what I'm looking for at this stage of my driving life. For a back road carver, there'd be nothing to beat an Impreza in which I had a part share quite a while back. Been there, done that, and had enough of 6MT shifting ;) Now it's cruising time, but in something with a lot of verve lurking. Guarantee I'll join you guys as an owner in 2007.

WRT 6MT, sport suspension and MTech kit, you didn't misunderstand me, you were just mouthing the things that YOU want in your next E90/E92 :D Am I correct?

Waiting for that 335i, Schwepps? Can I get a ride when you get it?

Curious!! You're the small minority that seem to like the orange reflectors (i.e. US spec lights).

The amber reflectors are part of the headlight design and cannot be taken out. US owners after the clean looks of the euro lights have to do a full and costly swap. To put it into perspective, the US spec xenons headlights fetch about $800-900 in the used market, while the Euro xenons (without the reflector) fetches minimum $1,800 (for complete set)!!!

As mentioned, I will gladly swap my US spec bi-xenons with your clear euro spec bi-xenons :D

You got me! :D That last post was a manifestation of my subliminal yearning or regret for the ideal E90 specs lol

At break-in time (1,200 miles for me)...the engine does feel looser/smoother. I hear that after 10k miles the engine gets better. I'm nearly at 10k and I have noticed the exhaust is burbling louder and the engine sounds more 'garang' at WOT !!!

kl2dc..bro...did u get my pm?...my ride's getting almost done now...engine definitely better once u clock up the miles

danc,.....welcome back...can you let me know what item they offer to change for u ...as i am in the mid of negotiating with AB Pg to change some of the items for my e-90. by the way what is this CIP 19.1 all about....need some help on this lah..as i m new to BMW,,,regards.

Today I've changed my standard 17" RFT to 19" Breyton Flame. Cannot resist the temptation already.....looks meaner & sportier than before....the question is, how to put a spare tyre into my boot as now I'm running on a normal tyres....:(

How much was the damage? Post some picts!! If you get a can of tyre puncture sealant & an electric air pump, that should cover it.

Seems like a collateral damage for me!:D What to do, good things not cheap, cheap things not good :)
Anyway, plan to make my car like the picture below:

Nice....Breyton Flames are great :) Now hurry up and drop that car....please post pics!!

Wrt spares, you can either:

1) Put a full-size wheel/tire back there. You need either the BMW jack kit or suitable adaptors for a regular jack. Our cars have those stupid jack adaptor blocks and not all jacks work with the E90. The factory jack kit fits these blocks. You'd also obviously need additional tools.

Another consideration is to use the roadside assistanace service to help you change flat tire.

Try a way to secure the spare, remember the wheel/tire combo weighs minimum 60 pounds each. If you want to be creative, perhaps a audio shop can fabricate a custom enclosure box (like a sub box) to hide your spare. But either way, you will 'eat' into your available trunk/boot space.

2) Latex sealant and air pump kit like the ContiComfort kit (about $25-45) or the M-Mobility kit ($150) part number: 82110134558. Only use a LATEX SEALANT, any other sealant is messy to clean up and will affect the balace of your tire/wheel.

3) Pray real hard you don't get a flat tire ever :D

Guys,
where can we find the latex sealant & air pump kit in kl? does the accessories shop / hardware shop (e.g ACE Hardware) sell those product? alternatively, can we order the m-mobility kit through AutoBavaria?

JV88...you cna probably order the M-mobilit kit from AB, the part number was listed on my previous post. For the ContiComfort kit, I am not sure, best to check around. GL.
