our BMWs use synthetic oils. it should last beyong 10,000kms. theoretically, it should last 30,000 km without much fuss.

hence, why BMW around the world, recommends 20,000 to 30,000km service cycle.

however, if you would like peace of mind, service every 15,000km to 20,000km (you are still well within 30k lifespan).

servicing more often will be better but it wouldnt be cost effective. (hey, if you have unlimited resource, why not?)

engine noise being coarser after 10k is just "placebo" effect.

my brother works for Petronas Lubricants department, he says that Synthetics can last beyond 50k for normal driving. so unless you gun your car daily, 15k to 20k service cycle is perfectly fine.

here is a print screen of PDB's Q&A.. for more click here..

Bear in mind many who had sludge issues going long term may not want to reveal the problem fearing resale issue.
However, those who have visited workshops and seen how bad are some engines with sludge problem will think twice about extended oil service interval.
If, unfortunately, your engine developed sludge problem few years down the line, I'm not the one with the headache, you are, that is if you still driving it. If you have sold the car, the headache would be the next owner's.
Bear in mind, sludge problem doesn't develop overnight, it's a long process. It's accumulation of sediments inside the engine.

SC people told me not to go with long service especially if low mileage user. Says worry about sludging. So even they are concerned about sludging when you follow the long service schedule.

Low mileage city-only driven cars tend to be more prone to oil sludge issue compared to those who travel long distance occasionally.

I agree with Fabian, and sludge is a known issue discussed many times.

Would flushing the engine before oil change help those who go with long service intervals?

Fabe ... Yeah that seems to be the pattern. So we need to Tekan tekan and go for long drives once a month la. :)

sludging occurs mainly for Mineral Oils. and 1970s synthetics. newer synthetics are much much better in maintaining its lubricity and composition.

synthetics are not very prone to sludging, however, if most people have FUD (fear of uncertainty doubt) then maybe 10k rule is good.

Just request to be present when they drained the engine oil the next time u send it in for oil service. ;)

Fabian and Tianci,

were you guys in italiauto club before or in merc forum. Seriously the nick sound familiar.

On this issue of oil sludge build up I think its all depends on the car owner itself. Its their choice to follow the manufacture interval or otherwise. Usually car nuts (including myself) would "pandai-pandai" and not follow the interval due to own past experience. I disagree of the placebo effect as the car that I once followed the manufacture interval was building up sludges. The pity guy is the new owner of the then secondhand unit .

In europe the car price do not cost an arm and a leg. It be a pity for the 2nd owner here in malaysia (who still pay a lot for the car)
to fork up a few more thousand for oil flushing, tap pad adjustment etc and all upon the car purchase (if he is lucky. worst of top overhaul).
Over there (like for fiat) the used 2nd hand unit used by the management is sent to "3rd" world i.e north africa etc.

Oh and I to are well aware of Selenia (does using alfa/fiat before counts :) ) and Petronas Lubricant.
Me and my family was in torino for the last 3 years for them.
