Hi guys,

This evening I might be able to do some dyno testing on three different induction kits to see the improvement or set backs on the power and torque of our UDM.

But test will only will be on my E46 328i. I try to get some photo and dyno readings too and update you guys ASAP.

Stay tune guys... :)

Manage to get the filter dyno test done using Dastek Dyno at RS Impressive.

Car Used was my totally stock E46 328i. Only mod was the very heavy 17" M-Tech Rims with Falken rubbers 225/45/17 FRT and 245/40/17 Rr.

Filter Tested were all from Pipercross UK.

1. Run One was baseline Stock car with new OEM paper filter.
2. Run Two was with Pipercross Venom Shielded Induction Kit
3. Run Three was with Pipercross Open Induction Kit with Shield
4. Run Five was with Pipercross Latest VIS Carbon Induction Kit
5. Run Six was with a Taiwanese copy of the Japan Open Pod - Foam Material

Note: Power and Torque given to me was all measure at the engine. Time of dyno was about 5pm and wheather was very hot. All test were down at the same period without removing the car from the dyno machine for more accurate reading.

Baseline Stock Car
Power 151.7bhp @ 5000rpm
Power 174.5bhp @ 6000rpm PEAK
Power 170.9bhp @ 6500rpm

Torque 168.9NM @ 3500rpm
Torque 205NM @ 4000rpm
Torque 216.1NM @ 5000rpm PEAK
Torque 207.2NM @ 6000rpm

Run Two was with Pipercross Venom Shielded Induction Kit

Power 156bhp @ 5000rpm (+ 4.3bhp)
Power 180.3bhp @ 6000rpm (+5.8bhp)
Power 183.4bhp @ 6500rpm PEAK (+12.5bhp)

Torque 197.6NM @ 3500rpm (+28.7NM)
Torque 216.7NM @ 4000rpm (+11.7NM)
Torque 222.2NM @ 5000rpm PEAK (+6.1NM)
Torque 214NM @ 6000rpm (+6.8NM)

Run Three was with Pipercross Open Induction Kit with Shield

Power 156.2bhp @ 5000rpm (+ 4.5bhp)
Power 181.3bhp @ 6000rpm (+6.8bhp)
Power 183.6bhp @ 6500rpm PEAK (+12.7bhp)

Torque 200.3NM @ 3500rpm (+31.4NM)
Torque 215.5NM @ 4000rpm (+10.5NM)
Torque 222.5NM @ 5000rpm PEAK (+6.4NM)
Torque 215.2NM @ 6000rpm (+8NM)

Run Five was with Pipercross Latest VIS Carbon Induction Kit

Power 156.7bhp @ 5000rpm (+ 5bhp)
Power 181.7bhp @ 6000rpm (+7.2bhp)
Power 182.9bhp @ 6500rpm PEAK (+12bhp)

Torque 199.4NM @ 3500rpm (+30.5NM)
Torque 218.1NM @ 4000rpm (+13.1NM)
Torque 223.2NM @ 5000rpm PEAK (+7.1NM)
Torque 215.7NM @ 6000rpm (+8.5NM)

Run Six was with a Taiwanese copy of the Japan Open Pod - Foam Material

Power 152.3bhp @ 5000rpm (+ 0.6bhp)
Power 177.6bhp @ 6000rpm (+3.1bhp)
Power 182.2bhp @ 6500rpm PEAK (+11.3bhp)

Torque 195.4NM @ 3500rpm (+26.5NM)
Torque 216.4NM @ 4000rpm (+11.4NM)
Torque 217NM @ 5000rpm PEAK (+0.9NM)
Torque 210.8NM @ 6000rpm (+3.6NM)

My Findings

It really supprise me that all induction kit fitted had no power or torque loss at any revs. When i used to play Jap cars, they tend to lose a little at lower revs, but the E46 just gain all the way with a better flowing filter!! Now i wonder how restricted the exhaust is?? Anyone want to loan me an exhaust to try?? :D

The most power gainer was the Pipercross open pod with 12.7bhp increase over stock but just a mere 0.7 to 1.4bhp other Pipercross filter.

The most peak Torque gainer was the NEW Pipercross VIS Carbon kit. In the dyno, you can see the VIS giving a wider and flatter torque among other filter.

My assumption is the Pipercross shielded Venom Filter kit should actually work better in real life compared with the open pod, cause dyno was done with bonnet open, and while driving with heat soak, the open pod might lose some BHP compared to the shielded Venom. Then again, the open pod for the Pipercross has a shield too.

The biggest loser was the Taiwanese copy. Actually there was no intention to test them, but there was a new unit lying next to the dyno bench and hey, might as well just give it a go and see how they fair as they look really cool with the chrome housing and yellow foam. So from the test, it shows that gains were only in the lower rev and the last 500rpm only. Almost ZERO Power gain 4500rpmm to 5500rpm and mere 3bhp at 6000rpm.

The findings are all the 3 different types of Pipercross really work in giving considerable power and torque improvement and another finding was the al-cheapo filters may look good and same as the branded ones, but definitely does not perform like the reputable brands.

One more thing to note was that the stock car Power peak at 6000rpm and power start dropping. After the Pipercross filter, power continue to increase and Peak only at 6500rpm!!! That 500rpm more for you power hungry guys!! :yahoo:

Sorry guys, can't post any photos yet.. Just found out from Mouse how to post them but now just too tired and hungry to try to set up the photo bucket. WOW almost 10pm still surfing net in office... Will try to get some photos up for you guys tomorrow..

Cheers..

Chris, totally awesome dude. Hats off, pants off to u. Once I chip my stock unit, i'll post results. Stay tuned. :yes!:

Very interesting. Just curious, what are the prices like for each of those item?
