Time to sell off all the bimmers you have and buy brand new Perodua or Proton.
Isn't that what they have in their mind when they implement such regulations?

If the petrol subsidy is completely removed, Then there is no reason to punitively tax higher cc cars, as they have been doing. Will they at least revise the roadtax structure?

The answer is very simple. There's no political will even though how sensible your idea is. I learned this from a forummer who works for a policy maker in the government.

there is a lot of "bullets to bite" but can msians take it and not use it at the next General Election?
Many of us are so used to subsidies and we are caught in the middle income trap while the government got too dependent on commodity based revenues as well as unnecessary taxation.

Imagine if you are in the government's shoes today. What would you do, WITHOUT having a possible political backlash OR without getting to see the initiatives implemented and survive the next General Election. Typing on the keyboard is the easiest but coming up with a decent and sustainable solution is not.

I believe the government is trying but there are too many things on the plate that will affect so many people thanks to the people voted in the past.

That's what running a government is all about. If they can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

the price discrmination must only be a temporary measure, for so long as there is one, the will be unrest and misuse. a smart government will use this price variation policy only as interim measure, after determining it as the path of least political damage. in the long run, the whole nation must adopt prevailing market price for petroleum products, or risk the country going bankrupt.

In fact, they should have started looking into all these ye~ars back, but since oil $ is there to support, they don't see it or I would say ignoring it. Normall citizen or a qualify accountant can see it, why don they...? Also why a small country without resources can manage it & a country with all the resource you have can't? Like funfer fahrer said, if they can't take the heat, let's drive them out from the kitchen or replace them with someone more capable. If we miss the boat, we are going to be in deep deep sxxt.

Just like frog in the water, and the cooking starts. Now, it get's pretty hot...

I honestly believe things will get a lot worse before it becomes better.

There are plenty of unsustainable policies which are draining the government's coffer.

The economic pie isn't exactly growing, but the population is definitely growing.

Eventually, something has to give way.

At present moment, I do not think the government has the political will to do the right thing and put the proper policies in place so that Malaysia will be competitive in a shrinking global economy.

PM Najib is caught between a rock and a hard place, and he inherited all these problems, no thanks to 22 years of TDM's policies which in my opinion are the root cause of all the problems we are witnessing today.

Mr President. I can see 2 of these unsustainable policies you talked about, which indirectly led to the issue we face today. Both were also were contributions of TDM. Get rid of them, at least half the battle is won. The 2 policies I'm talking about is:1. Proton
2. AP

Sell off Proton to VW or GM or whoever can make proper use of its manufacturing facilities to compete in global arena. Without Proton, entry level cars like Nissan or Toyota can be made so affordable. Imagine how much lesser monthly installment you need to pay if cars are a lot cheaper. With higher disposable income, you can then provide petrol at prevailing market prices. Nobody can fault you if global crude oil price goes up. So long as you don't already punish the rakyat with other taxes like this "Proton tax".

AP - just get rid of it. Who the heck benefit from it? It's an even worse idea than Proton. At least with Proton, the intention is noble.

Hopefully with his smart investment banker brother's help, the PM can navigate the country out of this subsidy issue, which has to go as a matter of time. But the other compensating factors must be sorted out first.

KY or the tingly ones like Play O???? both works ;)

Truth be told... and untainted it is... they know GE13 is the death knell... so from now till then, rape the country like a bitch in heat... then leave the scraps for the rest of us... unavoidable destiny...

I won't be surprised if this is true.

What TDM have done is nothing short of miracle that he have put us where we are today. It was TDM policy that pull us through from the 97 financial crisis (look at thailand and indonesian post 97)... Because of TDM policy that Malaysia have one of the biggest middle income population in the world ... It's because of TDM policy that so many people have got college and university education ... It's because of TDM that Malaysia is very well known all over the world (for the right reasons) .. it's because of TDM that Malaysia is a major player in the manufacturing of electronics components due to incentive policy in attracting FDI and having a large pool of skilled labour .. i can go on and on :D
Please don't downplay TDM contribution to the nation... Yes he may have erred a few times but his positive contribution far outweighs the negative.
We should be grateful that we have TDM who has the vision, intellect and wisdom to transform Malaysia to what it is now ...

Back to oil then :D ... imo the government should just end the oil subsidy altogether and use the money to improve our public transport, restructure the road tax scheme (i.e. make it cheaper) or maybe use the money to buy the toll operator companies and make the highway free for everyone...

getting out means being voted out.... many of the things that are being discussed will shorten their tenure. Just a thought, if an alternative govt were to run this country, would the decisions be different? Not trying to defend anyone but trying to put things into perspective. I hope the decisiosn made soon will be good for the country in the long run. It is imperfect but from what I've heard, it has to be done and should have been done yesterday.

Unfortunately, the voting public is also not mature enough to differentiate proper reps. People have short-term memory amongst other things. Okay la.. enough of my 2 cents. Gotta do work and save this country .. hahahah

Beemer, let me point out some misconceptions;-

1) Indonesia and Thailand have been attracting more FDI than Malaysia post 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Similarly, other countries than took the IMF prescription has done better than Malaysia, South Korea as well. Mahathir's capital control policy has caused many investors to shy away from Malaysia. This is a fact.

2) Do we really have one of the biggest income population in the world?
Middle income earners are defined those having combined household income from RM1200 to RM3499. Malaysia's per capita income in 2008 is estimated to be around USD 15,300 =RM 52000 (based on 3.4 exchange rate). However, government statistics have shown that about 90% of the population's household income is around RM3000 (yes, 90% are middle income and below).
Realistically let me ask you this, if you have a family with 2 kids, and your combined household income is RM3000, won't you be struggling to make ends meet with house and car loan and school going children. Is that middle income group for you? This is the inconvenient truth.

3) Now about Education. No doubt under Mahathir, we produced more graduates than ever. But Malaysia also produced a lot of unemployable graduates, which subsequently the government came out with this Graduate Retraining Scheme. Do you know how much it has cost the Rakyat? Officially, more than RM 1.4 billion has been spent to retrain fresh graduates. How do unemployable graduates contribute to the country's growth, let alone the billions spent on them to retrain them??!! Again, this is a fact.

4) Mahathir was lucky that when he took over the government, everything was in place. Education system, Judiciary, Rakyat was in harmony and so forth. The same can't be said now for PM Najib, even though I think he is a capable and likable person. I don't think there is any need for me to elaborate the korek korek korek incident which till today has tainted the judiciary, the MAS RM8 share buy back, the MISC bailout and etc.

And yes Proton and APs were his creations as well.

Whether he has done more good or bad for the country, I am afraid the jury is out on this.

Cheers
