the gormen has hinted many times that the petrol subsidies may be removed in totality or drastically reduced..they intend to put in several mechanisms so as not to 'tax' the lower income group..i wonder if the gormen will look into removing or reducing the import taxes on cars which are presently extremely high...in the case of thailand the car tax is low but fuel prices are relatively high...(time to think of a M5 or CLS350..)

Great idea - lower price of cars, lower gomen subsidy on fuel... so pay as u use. Road tax will go up on higher cap cars, i would think!

All subsidies should be removed and let market forces dictate the prices. Money saved on subsidies should be used for other more beneficial purposes like building more universities, training for farmers to use better farming techniques and fertilisers, fisherman to be trained to use sonar and high tech boats to increase yield and etc....

In a perfect world, that's exactly what would happen.

However the reality is very much different here eg Can-or-Nauts, Cars in the north pole, longest this and biggest that, etc etc.

Spent time with fishermen some years ago and pity them coz they're really getting a raw deal.

use the savings make msia a toll free nation. that would put us all in a very good position.

if petrol subsidies wereto abolished, do it in stage over a span of 2 years to lessen the load on the consumer. eg. cut 5 to 10% off every six months.

However, use the revenue save for the rakyat lah and not some projects that is hard to maintain and costly to build.

Thats the main problem.

$$$ saved by the gomen from removal of subsidies may not necessarily translated into more benefits for the rakyat.

yalor, even in Singapore, when the govt got extra money, they give rebate in term of income tax offset. In addition, they give cash rebate by depositing the money into the CPF saving..

I don't think the petrol subsidy will be totally removed as the price of goods as services will sky rocket due to a ripple effect. The message is being rewinded again and again more as reminder that we need keep them as govt so that they will continue to mantain the subsidy or repackage it in a different way.

Who wants to create a political suicide by being the person or party who is responsible for the staggering increase in cost of living? People will just look a the govt and blame them regardless of what ever reason they give.... bottomline counts.
