Mine using E36 318i 97, timing chain, less headache, there should be no problem if you plan to buy E46 M43. But....
If I were you, I would find the M54B25/M54B28 engine.. :rock:

Where got M54B28?

For M54, there are only B22, B25 and B30.

B28 should be M52/M52TU.

if you wan less headache thn m43 win hands down....compare with n42..

1 running on timing chain
2 parts are cheap to replace
3. less electronic sensor = less headache

my m43 is presently clock 330k millage........yes..true millage...still goin strong..from songkla to singapore..this car have been all type of places...even offroad..(but after offroad session my lower arm gave away)

bot 2nd hand tht time was 120k millage...the rest is me...

all i can say is...the car is underpower.....but good fuel consumption...maximum i went up 650km per tank...

i would say engine not a problem..is besides the engine part..like gearbox,hoses,more hoses,casket,radiator,expansion tank,longshaft, ignition coil, bushes, rear differential,absobers,starter, battery,alternator etc etc...

currently my gearbox sometimes cant reverse...need to change some solenoid or something...but hey..12 years car...330k millage...is tough baby..

Where got M54B28?

For M54, there are only B22, B25 and B30.

B28 should be M52/M52TU.

Sorry, My mistake, M52B28 I mean. TU much better.

E46 318i 1998-2000 using M43B19, means 1.9L.

This is a nice E46 318 CI with M43 engine owned by an enthusiast,. I have viewed the car and almost confirmed the deal but I was temp by a 330ci then a cabrio.

i love the m54b30 engine...the sound and the power delivery....too bad cant afford the roadtax... every year is tough...

for me m43 is good enuf for daily ride...still not enough fun factor...

im still trying to get some idea how to squeeze more power from this powerplant....

Yup bro..its depend on your wallet..if u can afford to maintain M54 or N42 its ok to have this one..bcoz this is a new model engine with technology..that means you maintain the technology on the engine..

for me..M43 its good enough..bcoz i just use my car on weekend or "Balik Kampung" only..daily i just ride to the office
