Hye All Sifus,Since Im Still new In BMW Model..I just want to know Which model of Engine For E46 ( Standard ) Low cost Maintenance?1- 1.9 cc 4 cylinders2- 2.0 & aboveHope All Sifu Can Help Anda Share Some Experiencethanks :top:

Hi wan e46, im driving the e46 N42 y2002. If you talk about standard maintenance, the cost is about RM200-300. Off course my car is already 10 yrs old and standard wear & tear maintenance of the car goes from hundreds to thousand plus to replace worn out parts. So far touch wood, my car hasnt got any major headaches at the moment but i am always prepared with extra cash if that happens. You can go check out the thread on maintenance where other sifus put up their cost of servicing from various workshops.

Lowest maintenance of all the E46 will be the M43 1.9L as pointed by Astroboy. 10 or 20 year old BMW not a problem as long as you buy a well maintained car.

Anything above 3 years old will be lining up with replacement parts.

M43 valve cover gasket is RM40, N42 is RM300.. *&^%$#@!!

M43 no valvetronic motor, no Vanos sensor or leak problem, even water pump is half of N42's price..

thanks sifu astroboy for the reply,

by the way.. im really not familiar with BMW Engine..Can u give more explaination with picture ( maybe )..what a different of M43 engine and N42 Engine?

M43 is the 1998~2001 318i 1.9L E46 engine. Facelift 2001~2003 E46 318i using 2.0L N42 and in 2004+, E46 318i using N46, a slight improvement over N42, but 99.99% parts sharing.. All 4 cylinders.

E46 320i is using 6 cylinders M54, 2.2L.. 170hp. That's different class.

N and M engine difference? Huge horsepower, fuel efficiency and technology difference. M43 no Vanos, no Valvetronic, use accelerator cable instead of wire, etc. Imagine Honda no VTEC versus VTEC.. :4:

Are u sure M43 is build between 1998~2001 ? M43 is using timing belt. My e36 1993 318 is using this engine. If this M43 used in e46, is that meaning e46 using timing belt ? As far as i know e46 never use timing belt.

E46 N42/N46 using timing chain.. please refer to the wiki link I provided above for the exact year of the E46 model.

My mechanic told me to stay away from E46 2.0L, too problematic. E46 1.9L is a better choice.

yeah if like that..i will go for E46 M43 Engine model 2001 and below..thanks for the great info bro

Finally i know what is the mistake. e46 and e36 also using M43 but the M43 engine picture is old version which is use in e36. e46 is using this M43 --> http://www.mudah.my/BMW+E46+318i+1+9+01+AT-16584926.htm

Newer version of M43 is using S shape manifold. Older version is non S shape. Newer version is using timing chain and older version using timing belt. From the picture u shown, there is a plastic box beside the injector. That box is cover the timing belt pulley. If this engine is running timing belt then the plastic box already flows out alot of engine oil................hehehehehehe

My mistake... M43 all using timing chain.... the photo I show above is not correct (M40).. M43 is this:
