Agree with 'Gameoveer' regards the brand of Petrol. I've tried Petronas and seem the consumption was higher compare to Shell. Eventually there's no diff on power. About the smoke generate more if using Shell, hmm... that's the D-point to smoke some Ah Beng who try to tail on us! :p

If I may share my experience with three brand of Diesel I have been using and observing so far. The engine appears to be "looser" and more responsive when on Shell and Petronas (although Shell is felt to have a slight edge) but one big gripe I have about Shell is that it leaves that "greenish-whitish" crust on my tailpipe. When the car run on Caltex, the car feels lumbered and less willing to surge.

Our prez aka dzuljazz uses bhp..:4: no complaints from him yet:4:

Btw has any one diy engine oil? I have just measured our oil filter cap.. You need a 28mm socket wrench to open it up:4:

Can anyone advise the correct part# for oil filter? I guess 11428507697 is correct but BavarianAuto says its 11427566327..

mine filter part no read: 11 42 8 507 683. Might be due to the 177bhp to 184bhp update. I believer the filter for 177bhp version is slightly shorter with bigger diameter. Whereas for my 184bhp version, it is taller with smaller diameter like the upper photo.

mine is on BHP and no complain till now. been using shell and petronas previously but seems to me that the milage for bhp is slightly higher compare to petronas. again, AES may contribute to this milage calculation.

Hi all,

I was interested in getting E90 320d with the N47 engine, until I did a google search on N47 common problems. Top of the list is premature timing chain failure for cars with mileage over 100k miles, but some like even way before 100k miles mileage.

It seemed like there is a sprocket design issue affecting 05.01.2009 - 01.03.2011 production. Below is the link to the technical bulletin and also extensively discussed thread on this failure.

What are your thoughts (320d owners) on this?

thanks for sharing, bro. something for us to look out for.
there are quite a few fellas here who have already exceeded the 100k km mark. so far so good, no major complaints by anyone yet, touch wood.

I was looking for something that could replace my e36 328 manual and the 320d seems to tick all the right boxes. :)

Anyway, symptoms for timing chain failure, according to what I have read - mechanical grinding noise during idling. Some reported that it just failed during drive, which means, expensive engine repair. In the UK, since the labour charge is expensive, finding an used engine on eBay seemed to be the better alternative.

I asked my mechanic over the weekend. He heard from one of the mechanic from a local BMW distributor that there was a timing chain replacement done for X1 xDrive20d due to noise. The timing chain location is near the firewall and the engine has to be dropped to facilitate the replacement.

Wah 160k and i thought my mileage was high.
Any wear and tear items changed post 100k mileage bro?
