643km and u are complaining...hehehe...

Hi bro, As highlighted by bro docrayboy in his earlier post, 320d can easily get 800km per tank..

I wish I can achieve that too.. Lol..

Sepang Quill Track Day & 320d Performance Powerkit

As promised, here are some pics from the recent Quill track day in Sepang on June 12.

The track cars were all lined up in the parking lot in the morning, getting their Castrol sponsor stickers and identification numbers prior to going out.

The F10 MSport, in Alpenweiss, was there on display too. I like it! The front lips especially are a marked improvement on the base model.

And here are the cars just before launching out onto the tracks.

And here's the Performance Powered 320d!

According to the SA at the track, you get the following: A new ECU, an upgraded intercooler fan and a new straight dual pipe exhaust! Too bad guys, no torque converter...!

As mentioned earlier, the new ECU cranks the N47 up to 201hp/420Nm, so 320d owners with the original 177/350 get a bigger improvement. Costs including labour estimated to be around the rm8k mark.

note: In the engine bay, you also get a little plaque to identify that you've had the upgrade!

This particular beastie had the yellow banana performance brake kits too. Nice. You don't get it as part of the engine upgrade package, haha.

Appreciations:
Let me say big thank you to Quill for organising this event, and for the invitation.
Thanks to docrayboy for extending the invite to enable us to join in!

Any reason why no new torque converter?

not sure, I've asked for the package specs & price when it becomes available, the guys at quill said they'd send it over. maybe they don't have the full details.
i'm under the impression that the ZF GA6HP19Z 6 cogs that we get in the 320ds is designed for 400Nms - though feedback from other forums seem to indicate exceeding this design torque is "ok". Quote from e90post http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97568

"That's quite correct - the torque is always the limiting factor in gearbox designs, as it is this twisting force that will ultimately wear down gearboxes. Where manufacturers give nominal torque ratings for their gearboxes (for instance the 400NM for the GA6HP19Z) these ratings are specified with quite considerable tolerances, to ensure that the gearboxes last for the lifetime of the vehicle. In practice of course, automatic gearboxes do fail, but the failure rate has dramatically decreased with the more modern ZF gearboxes compared to the older designs.

The most respected tuners - Hartge, Alpina, Carlsson for Mercs, DMS, Dinan, and others - understand that there are inherent limitations in each model car's specification, and will only tune your car within the limits of the mechanical components. Having a tuned remap producing 500NM in your car whose gearbox is only technically rated to 400NM is not so much of a problem, because the tuners 'torque-limit' the output to ensure that there isn't an excess of twist-action under full engine load.

Hartge in particular (I can't speak for the others, other than Alpina but that's a completely different story) warranty their remap and components associated with the remap. So in effect if your gearbox fails BECAUSE of the remap, then Hartge will pay for your new gearbox. However of course that depends on whether it can be proved that the gearbox failed due to the extra torque, or whether it was just a dodgy gearbox in the first place."

Was with Maniac at the event as well, nobody could really answer that question but from BMW's official site I've read online the Performance Kit officially comes with the cooling and ECU upgrades only, no torque converter included. I'd jump for it if the torque converter is included.

Also Maniac it seems like this kit is for the BMW N47 184hp/380Nm only, not the 177hp/350Nm engines since they're limiting it to March 2010 models and newer...

420nm torque!!! That sounds absolutely wicked. Maniac/gameover, how was the drive? Were the performance differences immediately apparent?
Just a feeler, anyone intending to do this upgrade? Can bro Paul tan's connections give us a better group buy price? :) Thinking aloud n very tempted

Nobody was allowed to drive the upgraded 320d. We were worried about the auto transmission since 420Nm is beyond or close to the capacity of the AT box already but the guy did say that there wouldn't be any problems "within the warranty period". Not very convincing IMO :D

I would love to do the upgrade if it included the torque converter replacement, that's a bit more insurance for me beyond the warranty period plus it's also a free ATF replacement :D

Talking about ATF replacement, did anyone of you done it ? And, what is the recomended period to change ?

Oh if that's the case where did this thing about new torque converter first surface actually?

Good question, I googled it and it's on several other forums as well with the exact specs posted by docray originally. Apparently the price for a manual is about £150 cheaper than the auto version because of the torque converter. However I've not seen a single owner who's actually installed it on e90post or any other forums out there.

Anyway let's wait for the final package from Quill etc.

Hi Zarcon! What do you think of the new Power Kitted 320d?

Yo doc.... was in the car with Jerry during Sepang but he was under strict instruction not to overkill the car...lol...but definitely feel a different punch with it. personally i think it could be worth it with the promotion price. Though am getting confused if the kit comes together with the twin muffler, as different people giving me different answers now. I think if it comes all in at around 7k plus, im sending my car in.

Truth be told. Had it been a toss between 323i and Passat cc, I'd chosen the VW. That's just my honest opinion. No malice intended.

The 320d is one monster of a ride and I do see myself very comfortable in it for at least another 3 years before the itch starts again. By then, let's hope they will bring in the 325d. Yummy-licious!!!!

Passat CC is nice! but still cant compare to the 320d?

go test drive the 320d bro.. very hard to know ur preference until u urself have test driven it.. what is music to others, my not be the same case to you.. some may like the adrenalin rush of 380nm, my not be the same with u.. very subjective..

Hi Zarcon! No twin muffler in the Power Kit package-but its a good investment I think adding a bit more money for the twin muffler. Then it actually sounds like a sportscar! It already drives like one-we know that, even without the Powerkit.

Very abnormal-I never need to top up my radiator.Better get it checked mikey!

went back to PG over the weekend, whole way there and back..only 1 car wanted to play... a brand new alpine white 320d. its torque at high speeds is really impressive....at 150kph, i wasnt paying attention and a gap opened up....he gunned it and just disappeared.

wonder if it was chipped

All 320d cars are very fast-its boils down to how hard you want to play with it when you really floor the accelerator and start hitting speeds of close to 250km/hr. With the Powerkit, 275km/hr shouldn't be unachievable.
