Thanks for the advice, bro..

It is a pre-owned unit, and it is already over 6,000km..

This is a terribly hard car to keep below 2.5k RPM. And I still got 1.5k km more of "torture" before I reach the 2k km run in period. Ahhh! :banghead:

To keep cost low because I drive to Lumut twice a week for work. No need 100 words. :reddy:

You calculate a lot, don't you? A bit of a miser, kedekut fella? That's why u r so concerned about diesel cars resale value? Come on lah....don't piss us off here....go to another thread or get lost. Even upset the great man, Paul Tan. Who are you, meetoo? Small fry with no automotive industry standing.

Thanks to this thread with full of information that makes me choose my 320d, for 2 months i had drive it from minimum 40km/h until 230km/hr....the feeling in this car really hard to describe with words...thanks docrayboy, jediM and others 320d owner for the information that makes me buy this car!!:top:

Thanks to your very informative and poisonous insights on diesel and the 320d, i ended up getting mine yesterday.
(after a long fought thought comparing cars from other marques)
Like dcmy, its hard to describe the feeling with words. The car brings joy and smile to me whenever i drive.
I got myself a premium selection 2010 320d and cruised on the journey back to Terengganu where i work.
The car's amazing for a relaxing drive and VERY responsive when needed.
300+km done on a quarter of a tank with +-700 km to go (driving a la aunty mode most of the time while chit chatting with a passenger)

not 2.5k rpm la, not more than 3.5k rpm before 2k km.

Either petrol or diesel ....

Most of the newbies incl me don't know much abt diesel except the dirty smoke comes out from taxi or lorries. We have nightmare abt this diesel which is using MS 123 which is upgraded not more than 2 years ago to Euro2M. Thus, it is not surprising that many petrol user thought it is the same diesels we used. Furthermore, back to 3 to 5 years ago not many passenger car uses diesel (I mean daily home user) until recently Europe is using diesel technology as well as MY hiking up with petrol prices, users like us have to find alternative such as LNG or diesel.

I myself quite confused also to go for BMW diesel or Merc petrol until I see posting from docrayboy as well as PM from paltantk. Thanks to both of them for the advise which I find meaningful. For myself, I think the most drawback is not resale value as we do not know what is the resale value after 5 years later as diesel may become popularity due to rocket price of petrol but the clattering sound which is louder than petrol engine. Secondly, of course your personal perference whether u are comfortable with the word "petrol" or "diesel" which mentality feel that diesel is "dirty" and "cheap"

Just some of my thoughts !

So, jovial bro getting the 520d or 523i? Made your mind up? Here in KL, the waiting time now 9 months for the 520d. The 523i can get immediately, no demand. Of course the MR 50K difference between the 2 cars also helps the 520d sales.

Diesel being seen as dirty or cheap is a long-held misconception popularised by elitists without fully understanding the differences. Petrol has always been cheap in Malaysia due to subsidies, and now that some of that pricing structure is being revised, many are waking up to reality. As a commercial fuel, diesel has always been recognised as the star performer, simply because of heavy haulage requirements of lorries, trucks, vans etc and the need for fuel economy in order to keep costs down for the businesses running them.

In other parts of the world where fuel efficiency and environmental concerns have been common goals, diesel engine development has kept pace and diesel has long been the fuel of choice even for domestic vehicles.

My personal choice of a diesel powered vehicle was based on a little more than personal preference. In terms of what is available out there right now, nothing gives better value for money where performance and efficiency are concerned. It was and still is, the logical choice, for me anyways.

until we get the new Euro4 diesel, the diesel engines in the bmws being sold locally are still lagging behind their German and Euro versions, which run at full optimum efficiency. The diesel cars being sold here in bolehland are the DETUNED versions in order to be able to run on Euro2 diesel which spews a lot more sulphur into the air that we breathe.
Apart from that, i dont really like the 'expensive tool bag' clatter of the engine when heard from outside.

my friend, you are entitled to your opinion when it comes to what you think of the sound of diesel engine clatter, but please refrain from making statements that are untrue with regards to engine or vehicle performance. the new N47T 320d/520d's in m'sia are neither detuned nor lagging behind their euro equivalents.

A liitle bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, isn't it? Just bcos we don't get euro4 diesel here, the engines are detuned by default.
If u hv bothered to research a little prior, the only part that is left out on our local versions vs European specs is the omission of the diesel particule filter (dpf). To make things simple, the dpf is to the diesel what the catalytic converter is to the petrol engines. And we all know the positive effects on performance when the catalytic converter is removed.

On this same principle, it is even likely that our versions are more powerful than our European cousins. And this may explain the very impressive dyno results above official BMW hp/torque ratings which Paul tan did with a few forummers here recently. Search his blog for the results.

Friend, when u hv enough time in the 320d, you will finally appreciate that frugal practicality and true performance is no longer a myth. The diesel clatter heard outside? Bro, you are seriously missing the forest bcos of one tree.

I came from another turbo b4 the 320d and I did say that once on a turbo, u will always go turbo. I need to qualify that statement now 'once on a turbo DIESEL, forever on a turbo diesel'. You have just tasted the forbidden fruit

i am aware that the dpf is removed from the local versions. what i said is that its not optimum because the engine is designed to run cleaner. I dont give a shits ass about its dyno performance, i am more concerned with its environmental performance. Hence, its not performing to its true potential as a Green engine as far as i am concerned. No doubt the diesel crusaders here will soon be barking up my tree :)

Wow! I feel so touched that we have in our presence a noble gentleman who places grammes of CO2 emitted per km over other selfish benchmarks like hp and torque. :)

Not tree, its your arse. I mean, do you avoid beans in your diet so you don't fart alot of CO2 out into the environment, bro?

as a matter of fact i do doc. Is that a real doc or dog? i mean, you are so foul mouthed you cant be a real doc can u? A real disgrace to the BMW marque i think. If u can speak with proper English grammar then we might have a meaningful discussion about the subject matter which you seem to avoid at all costs. In the meantime google up manners.
