Yes.. I think you should know cos you are the GB specialist..

Since you are here.. Could you explain what are the problem faced by most E46 owner with the GB?

I have my GB aux pump fail at 100,000 KM for my e46 but not for my E36. My E36 GB fail @ around 150,000 KM which required complete overhaul.

There is also alot of discussion of the ATF to use for GB. it there any difference?

Ok. I try to explain what I know and what information I get from my boss.

1st of all, E36 and E46 is using diffferent type of gearbox. GM and ZF. E46 comes with 5-Speed transmission. So far, the problem caused by E46, is more on mechanical faults. Maybe cause BMW know GM gearbox is long lasting, so they created ZF gearbox to get more customers. >.>

For ATF on gearbox, there are actually many type's of ATF. However each ATF is specially designed for different gearbox. GM gearbox using 1 type of fluid. For ZF gearbox, 6HP another type of ATF while 4HP,5HP another type of fluid. Basically all the fluid type is different for different gearbox.

i think its the ealier symptom of gearbox sensor problem... experienced it.. last 2days.. and today.. my gearbox indicator light on edy.. haiz.. pls advice me good w/shop.. thank u..

tenno, now we are using Dextron VI. PetroCanada already handshake with GM company to produced a better GM oil. It produced double the power than it normally do. Cheers to PetroCanada :top:

i did try to flushing gearbox oil. But sad to say there no shop around can do coz they need special adaptor to connect the ATF flush machine to GB host. Nothing suit. Btw i had the oppurtunity to see the ATF that so dirt. And that dirt has block the ATF to flow nicely to GB coz when i opened up the other hose, theres only small amount get through. I presumed that sum is empty as yours. Probably plate also worn out but pump still working. Now surrender at workshop. Hopefully not get conned. huhu.

Btw i have a Q, is that realy white bottle ZF as you mention only suit for tiptronic GB only? (this was said by mech). I think as long as it is Dextron III(manual say), is good enough.

Adriangzh, thanks for the good info. But this petroCanada is limited in the market. And again my question, does it suit for E46.I heard E46 also has diffren type GB. Mine is 318i 1.9(A).

E46 got 2 type of GB. You must 1st make sure the type of GB you have.
If you are using GM gearbox, yes tis petroCanada suit you. Actually it suit for all GM gearbox. :top:
However if you using ZF gearbox, you must use different ATF oil. Hope this info help you.

When the mech open the sump, there is no oil left. Luckily for me, the ATF was flushing out all the metal part and no filling got into the GB. Chaneg the pump for about 1K plus 400+ for the oil. Total cost part + labour - about 2K. Add 980 for torque converter as the sleeve was also worn out. Did not overhaul the GB which will cost about RM5500 to RM6800.

Jarance, where did your oil go? No leak? Simply disapear? so I should open the sum as well as you to know whether theres an oil inside or not. Any recommendation on ATF to be used for my 318 1.9 Japan full spec Y2K?

I simply dont like maggie..[/QUOTE]

it is clearly stated on the GB. I just seen an E46 GB made by ZF. it clearly stated the manufacturer and the recommended ATF that you should used in case of repair.

It was overhaul by a GB specialist but after overhaul there was a alarm came on when after driving for a while. I saw this GB in my regular workshop. The chief mechanic say that the GB specialist cannot solve the problem on ask my mechanic to help.

need help.. wanna send my e46 for repair.. pls advise me a good workshop... gearbox problem.. most prob the sensor i think.. pls advise me thank u..

Chetz, if u experience the same like me, u r maybe right. Mine still under repair. The cause is only GB suiz/sensor. But then the sleeve worn already cause i drag the car here and there to look after workshop. So dont drag your car anymore until u fix it. Mine will get out from wshop within 2 or 3 days. Will update later all the cause and cost.

hie tenno.. ya pls update me thank u..
ive send mine to auto bava for dygnose.. and the results is gear monitoring.. they ask me to change the gbox.. quote rm25k.. :banghead: damn~ made think that i should have take an evo instead of european muscle.. as the parts are more affordable.. ive ask some fren and beemer sifus.. they said most prob its the sensor.. or dirty oil (an assumption) i havent drive much since the gbox indicator turns on.. wanna repair it before it became worse..

sending for gbox servicing tommorow... and hoping it'll solve the prob..
- change gearbox oil
- gasket and filter

hope to hear from u soon bro.. thanx

you cannot solve your problem by just changing the atf and filter. i think your problem is much more serious. ab have quoted 25k for a new gb. you can overhaul the gb for about 8.5k. it might not be as good as new but at least 90% as new. try m-scope or m1 for a quotation.

Yes. What Jarance said is correct. It cant solve the problem. U have to change the sensor, need to do some work on GB body and maybe some other part depend weather there any wear and tear. GB recond alone is around RM2.5K (thats was quoted by my friend those day). But then it is not including workmanship and other parts need to be changed. Just get ready to be charged.
Today im not going to see my car. Hope to see progression tomorrow evening. Busy lol somemore my bike also visited a workshop yesterday. Aiiya. Double the problem already. Lucky my bicycle didnt follow the decease.

Haha. Today i go to the worshop. Suprise looking at my car outside the workshop ready. I was thinking that my car perfect already. D foreman ask me to test drive. Though gear change is better, unfortunately the good result i expected is not happen. Ist,2nd are smooth but when come to 3rd gear it was difficult to engage. Once 3rd gear engaged, it will stay unchange forever until the shutted down and start again.
So far foreman just did service the GB body valve and solenoid including change the ATF. Its getting better but stuck at 3rd gear. Probably plate worn out and sleeve maybe? That was said by foreman. BTW if we repair or replace the plates, does it called overhoul? He qoute me up to $4K subject to how worst inside the GB. Once again have to leave the car at workshop. Aiiya..

Yes, when you replace the plate it is call overhaul. The repair kit comes in a set. Even if one plate is worn out, you replace all of them. The repair also include all the gasket and seal.

so u didnt changed any sensor bro tenno?? how much the workmanship cost?? mine is ok edy.. the gbox indicator doesnt turns on edy.. but foreman advice to change the ATF, gasket and filter.. dirty oil oso could make the solenoid malfunction.. hope to hear my car progress today...
