The temp that's shown in the dash is the outside air temp, not the engine temp...unless I'm mistaken.

Nop. I am talking about a hidden menu. My outside temp can be 80-90degC.

Guys,

The hidden menu you are referring to is actually located at the tachmeter. Look directly above the 6000rpm (red zone). You will see about 8-9 graduations (tick marks) that will eventually decrease to 3 when the car is in ambient temperature ( my e60 shows this). So the rule of the thumb is the more tick marks you see, the colder your car is, and if you don't see any, then drive straight to AB!!!!!
The reason they did away with the temp gauge is because people brought their cars in over a slight increase away from the mid point. This BMW claims is normal. Hence to avoid the influx of panic stricken owners, they got rid of the temp gauge. This was told to me by a frontline service staff at AB glenmarie.

Woow...that is so intersting...like unlocking a special code in a PS2 game. Will take a really close look at my tacho on the way home!! Thanks.

I had sent my car back to AB cos had some creaking sound coming from the doors when going over bumps and corners. Apparently it is the door rubber lining which was not good quality. So they changed it for me under warrenty. No problems since.

I took it over 210kmph once on the way to and back from PD. Wind noise is there but quite common and usually coming from the rear mirrors. My old RX300 was even louder!

At 5000km I got the oil and filter changed even though recommendation is 25,000km. Cost me around RM500 to do that. So now I have much more confidence in flooring the pedal to the metal!!

John,

Where did you get the oil and filter changed?? If BMW recommends to change at 25000km, then they are using synthetic oil, which should last you at least 15000km.

I got it changed at AB. After the service, they reset the computer and next service is in another 25,000km. All the travel information is stored in the ignition key and retrive with a reader at the service advisor's desk.

I changed it for my own piece of mind. I will probably change again at the next 10K km or every 6 mths.

Here is a lousy shot of the secret menu. I can't remember which entry but I think this is the one. The temp will go up as the car warms up; it was 30 something a couple of minutes before I took the shot.

Besides Stranger, Johnchen and myself, who else owns a E60?? Information like this is crucial for good maintenance of our cars. Thanks.

Stranger, how do we get to this "secret menu"?

Johnchen, did my "tick" explanation work on your E60 as well?

Cheers

The tick is indeed a good indicator. I have always taken it as a "soft" rev limiter. That's to say, never rev beyond the tick

I looked at it yesterday, when it dropped till about 3 ticks (always the case for me after the car has warned up), the temp was about 90-95degC.

This is a trick that existed I think for E39, E46 or even E36.

Generally, it shouldn't mess up your car's setting. But I have found there is some adjustment coefficient for fuel consumption (I can't control them) which I have messed up and couldn't set it back. So now I have super good reading on this which is not true.

As for the temp, I saw some similar adjustment. So be careful.

For E60:
Menu 6 is the fuel consumption part. 6.3 or 6.4 is the calculation coefficient adjustment.
Menu 7 is the temp. 7.2 or 7.3 is the adjustment. 7.1 is what I showed earlier.
Menu 2 will show you some funky test sequence and you will see your speedo/tacho go maximum. Do this only without starting your engine.

Here goes:
To navigate:
1. The knob on the dash below the speedo is the "button".
2. To move from menu 1 to menu 2, you must make sure the content or menu 1 is not shown. When it's shown, a light press of the button will cycle through the sub menus, like 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.1 something like that.
3. Hold the button down a bit longer will enable you to move from menu 1 to menu 2 instead of the submenu. When you do that, you will see that the content of the currently displayed menu/submenu disappear. Then each light press of the button will move from menu to menu.

To get into the secret menu:
1. Press the button before starting the engine and you will see the obc light up; turn the key (without stepping on the brake) without cranking the engine. You will see the secret menu show up. Release the button before it disappears. You are now in the secret menu.
2. You must unlock the menu first; otherwise you can only see menus 1, 2, 19, 21 I think.
3. To unlock, go to menu 19. Wait for a while, you will see 2nd line as "lock: on", and 3rd line "code: ?" You must key in the code by pressing the button. The code will cycle from 1 to 45 and back. The code is part of your VIN number which will display on menu 1.1 (when you enter the secret menu, leave it there for a while and you should see something like, in my case, B1234567, which is the last 7 chars of my VIN); the code will be 2+3+4+5+6+7 which is 27. Press the button in menu 19 until you see "code: 27"; then stop. The menu reverts to menu 1. To make sure you have unlock, go to menu 19 again, and you should see 2nd line as "lock: no". If it shows "code: ?" again, make sure you hold the button down such that you can move to menu 20 without changing the "code"; otherwise the menu is locked again.

So much for the long description; try it; any question I will be happy to answer. But try it at your own risk.

BTW, menu 21 is the master reset. It will ask you to enter your date and time again.

Stranger,

Thanks for the indepth explanation on the secret menu selection. I don't think I will go there, looks too complicated. Furthermore, don't want the screwup anything. You know the saying "If its not broken, don't fix if"

Cheers

I owns e60 as well, but its kinda complicated as stranger explaination on temp gauge locater in the hidden menu. Dont have guts to try-out, it might cost me a bomb if things goes wrong.... :beaten:

I agree if the e60 owners could group & share among us...esp me with limited knowledge in cars and bmw, of course.

Anyone drives 530d?

I don't really notice it with my E60 but with my RX 300, yes pulls left all the time but managed to get that corrected after many tries.

John,

Wanted to attend, even PMed one of the committee members for enquiries for payment and booking, but did not get a reply. So made alternative plans. Will be road testing my E60 to Singapore tomorrow. I think we share something common here....my in-laws are from Singapore.

Cheers
