A no brainer, but just would like to confirm that the oil will need to be changed together when doing this?

Not necessarily. My oil wasn't due for a change when i did that.

Was told by a mechanic today its quite a tedious job. Alternator and everything from the side needs to come out. He quoted me RM100 for the labour though.

It is tedious. Yup all those mentioned have to be removed.

I did my 1st service of my E39 530i today after getting it yesterday. was told that it is better to flush the engine everytime we change engine oil, (which contradict my other mechanic's advice on other car model) any comment on this?

The car has been using Petronas fully synthetic 0w40 from day 1.

What is the mileage done on your e39 530i? Think 0W40 would be good for a new car. Something more suitable for your car would be fully synthetic 5W30 or 10W50.

If you replace lube every 8k to 10k km (fully synthetic lube), it is not necessary to flush the engine.

Mileage 165k. i went back to the same service centre the previous owner did all the service from day one. He told me the car has been using 0w40 all this while (so i continue). i did ask him why need to flush engine everytime since using such good grade engine oil and change every 8 - 10k km, he said is to prevent sludge from building up.

I checked thru all previous service records over the past 5 years of my E39 530i. The car very well taken care of, with on time service, fully synthetic oil change every 8 -10k, nevertheless, i noticed twice the car broke down and was towed back due to i) Fuel pump+fuel float+fuel device ii) Radiator + coolant tank.

Car broke down is something i am very much dislike, as this car will be driven by my wife too. just wondering how to avoid such thing in the future??? what other preventive maintenance need to be done (breakdown-prone parts?)

Good thing is these expensive parts already replaced.

ask the mechanic to do full inspection whenever the car is send for oil service.. do check the cheap parts such as fuel hoses - 'bocor', happened to me twice within 2 years.. the hose is just $15+ per meter.

I was driving slowly, over a speed bump then heard a loud crack. Stop and found out the tyre exploded! Luckily (or rather unluckily - I'll tell why later) I was near a tyre/service shop. Apparently, the front spring broke!! the broken spring then puncture my tyre. Truly unbelievable! BMW front spring broke??

Tyre shop recommendation:
New shock and spring: RM1,400 (one pc)
Used shock and spring: RM900 (one pc incl labour)
Dust Cover : RM45 (one pc)
Damper: RM50 (one pc)

Going to call up few parts supplier and check on these.

... still can't believe the spring broke

I would recommend you to change a pair instead of a piece.

New shock and spring: RM1400? What brand? Kinda high site.

Thanks bmw7833, I was thinking the same thing. Tyres, suspension systems better change in pairs. Don't know what brand. But he keep suggesting me to take the potong kereta one. No thanx. Better margin for him perhaps.
Anyway, I was secretly told that my shocks are ok. Even though the boss claimed that it was already leaking (Damn him). After calling few places found a pair of coil spring at Suan huat.

New front coil springs : RM220/pc X 2 = RM440
Dust Cover: RM15/pc X 2 = RM30
Damper: RM20/pc X 2 = RM40

Thanx to BMWCM and especially this thread. I've spent half a day browsing through the posts.

Now looking for standard size tyre 225 55 R16

Strange, never thought springs can break at certain mileage. i'm using eibach coils now n dont really know how it fares..keeping fingers crossed

Wear and Tear Maintenance

Did some wear and tear maintenance yesterday for my E39. Originally went in for an oil + filter change and replacing my leaking oil filter housing gasket, but end up doing some other stuff as well. Work carried out at Gen Power Motorsport in Desa Aman Puri, Sri Damansara as I is close to my house and I wanted to test the workshop's knowledge and work quality. Some items bought from Bomin Auto Jalan Ipoh, bought myself to be delivered to the workshop. Here's the damage:

Bought from Bomin Auto:

1) Radiator (german brand he says, no brand on the radiator) RM600
2) Thermostat RM150
3) Idler bearing RM75
4) Fan Belt Tensioner RM130

Item bought by workshop (he admitted he marks up these prices):

1) Oil Filter Housing Gasket RM20
2) Oil Filter RM40 (I knowwww!!)
3) Castrol Magnatec 10W40 RM110 each x2 = RM220

Labour

1) Fit new radiator RM80
2) Replace oil filter housing gasket RM100
3) Replace thermostat RM50
4) Replace fan belt bearing + idler bearing RM50
5) I think he forgot to charge for doing the oil change so the filter price is ok for me.

Total damage RM1515

What do you guys think?

While i wouldn't say it's the norm but broken spring is not unheard of ... There's been many cases reported of broken coils or spring. Google 'bmw broken spring' you will find many post from owners having these issues. Most what ive seen is the rear coil having these problem.

Parts from Bomin looks very reasonable. Overall, I think the "damages" are OK
