I would appreciate if anyone with prior experience or opinions to chip in and share your ideas.Problem:I'm driving a 2003 E39 M54B22 and occasionally when I fully depress my throttle pedal (Wide Open Throttle/WOT) on 1st gear I would get very slight repeating (very quick) jerks and my rpm would be hesitating in the range of

Thanks bro haywire.

I considered the Vanos seals also. I'll try to look and see where I can get that replaced in Penang.

The situation I have is that it only happens during take off from standstill and only on 1st gear since the RPM starts from 700rpm. Plus the jerks and no response freaks me out a little especially taking off from a junction.
Yes it's highly possible due to the Vanos seals. Thanks bro.

Hi Guys,

i drive the same model as Psykit, 2003 M54 520i E39 i have serviced my vanos, checked all my 6 coils, my plugs, my fuel filter but i still get the the problem you had mentioned at times during take off, but if you depress your gas slowly than its ok. once the gears have changed from 1st to rest there is no issues already.

I have serviced my torgue converter too. My millage is 130k .

I have learnt to live with the problem as some say becoz of the drive by wire so there will be a delay.

* haywire do you live Sri Damansara if so than we should meet up as i live same place too.

Cheers

Let us know if any update on this matter. I've seen others having the same model as us, and not having this issue even though his VANOS seals are never replaced before.

Its something to do with the gas pedal need to look into the software etc.

Hi Siva,

Did you get your issue sorted out already? Was that the root cause advised by a mechanic?

Thanks.

Hi bro, no really until today but the problem is really felt during very hot day when temp reaches 39 to 40 than u can feel it.

Some how if you have noticed the BMW drives really good at nite or early morning.

I haven't changed my coil packs milage now is at 130k thinking of changing all 6 than seeing how it feels.

I was adviced to change my fuel pump when milage gets closer to 150k to be on the safe side.

I send in my car to Optimum so far i find them good responsive to my issues.

Well you can call me we can meet up some day to for teh tarik discuss further 012-6016707

Cheers

Siva

Thanks bro for sharing. I would love to but I'm based in Penang :)

I was thinking about the coil packs as well but not sure whether that is the real root cause. As far as I know if it fails you can obviously feel it and your car will vibrate violently. Our problem is only in 1st gear.

If you do intent to change the coil packs please update this thread with the results after. I would love to know.

Cheers bro!

I am not sure if I had the same symptom but as I was started my car and put it into "D" this evening after work, the car did seem like it was in very soft jerk - it didn't feel like those violent jerks when you drive a manual and you don't clutch properly when going up him, this was very mild but almost lost of power but just a slight speed forward. I wasn't flooring it so it is definitely not WOT. Just the normal soft acceleration. I don't know why but my first instinct was to signal left and quickly put the car into neutral and back into D (D-N-D in less than 1 sec). This seems to do the trick and no issue after that. Never had this issue before as well and touch wood, the car didnt show any symptoms again even after a cold start.

BTW, I already had my vanos replaces a couple of weeks back. This doesn't seem to be a like-for-like issue you describe but don;t know if this would work for you OR if this is something known before. Been reading most of the e39 thread and can't remember any thread like my expriece but closest to yours.

Hi there, wuzzles thanks for the update well, i have owners telling it could be the petrol so well i am using petronas all the way 95 ron at times i do use mobil 95 ron.

Since my my car millage is at 130k well i think i try replacing all my six coils and see whats the differents.

I serviced my vanos seals 4th quarter last year, serviced my torgue converter also when my milage was at 110k. My trottle was also serviced at that point of time.

I still get the lack on 1st gear during when the weather is really hot.

I will update once i have changed my coil packs.

Cheers

Siva

Thanks wuzzles and siva for sharing your experiences.

Looks like both of you are still experiencing mild jerks even after VANOS seal replacement.

I would suggest that you get the car inspected by auto transmission specialist. Definately sounds like a tranny issue to me.

Dear Vin,

I have serviced my torque converter, flushed my GB changed filter.

One of my friends told me its something to do with the trottle since its drive by wire thingy.

I drovemy friends 523i 1997 model seems responsive on 1st gear take off, why does this problem occur to me on hot day. The car is superb to drive at night and early in the morning, sudden surge of power kicks in.

Cheers

Dear Psykit,

Bro i manage to solve my issue with the 1st gear or the trottle response when u floor it, sent in my car for service @ Optimum kayu ara this time i was adviced to change AFC valve below the intake manifold they call it the heart lay man terms now my trottle response is so good and the light feel is back.

Cheers,

Root cause = Pressure Regulating Valve?

Bro Siva,

Glad to know that you got yours sorted out. When you mention AFC Valve, is it referring to the Pressure Regulating Valve (Item no. 1) as below? Some people also call it Crankcase Ventilator (CCV) or Oil Regulator.

Yes bro that is the one they changed.

1. in the picture 2. in the picture4. in the picture and 7. in the picture

basically the hoses where very hard due to engine heat they where not gripping so tightly adviced to change it.

i hope the problem does not come back, my fuel filter and ATF fluid and filter was replaced plus all the plugs.

coil packs was advice not to change as all 6 working fine.

Cheers.

Wow... I didn't know a pressure regulating valve could cause jerk. I know this could be one of the possibility for engine oil consumption due to blockage and pressure changes caused by aging valve. Thanks for the insight Siva!

I'll remember to get mine looked at as well.
