Conversion of e39 steering

I read on another forum that the paddle shifters can be DIYed on those wheels. Awesome wey...having those....especially when tap the downshift paddles and the THROTTLE BLIPS....priceless!!! :wink:

Second hand ones are hard to come by....can only resort to new ones...price i think sky high la...

pre-facelift and facelift car steering incompatible. think theres also something to do with the type of airbag, single stage versus dual stage.

I think that means you can't interchange steering from pre to post or vice versa, if that's what Paul's trying to say...:wink:

Hello, I have been reading a lot about these paddle shift steering on E39s.

What I gather from my reading:

1. Yes No 5 steering can be fitted to pre-facelift E39, but you would have to buy the airbag as well which costs nearly as much as the wheel itself. The old one cant be fitted in the new shape steering. Not sure about the wiring though. Correct me if I'm wrong. Here in the UK the airbag for that steering costs £440.

2. You would have to buy the E46 M3 SMG steering wheel to use the paddle shift. You cant just buy the paddle and retrofit it to your existing M-sport steering (No 5). i think there are certain wiring or special parts inside. And your car needs to be post 1999, when BMW introduced their Steptronic gearboxes. As for costs, I'm not familiar with Malaysian prices, but here in the UK the SMG steering costs £550 new, if you have the M-sport steering already (No 5) it is possible for you to just swap it to the new steering. If not you would have to buy a new airbag (£440). And finally there is a kit to connect the new steering to the system which costs £110 here in the UK.

I have just ran a search on the forum and it looks like bro Hybrid is currently selling his M3 SMG steering wheel. He is expecting RM3500 for the steering and the airbag as well. Just for your info.

Just to update the thread.

After searching and searching, now i have these 5 types of steering wheel in my hand, initially want to fit the SMG steering, it is do-able but involve a lot of works. To save the money and time, i decided to fit the most economic one which is plug and play to my car.

- Soon to instal steering

- Borrow from one of OM

- Up for sale, looking for new owner

- Reserved by friend

3 is another OM's steering, might be for sale since he's converted to SMG steering such as in no 5. I installed it to his car last Friday.
