affan66, I beg your pardon but I think you're making an assumption which generalizes. We're not all so small-minded as to be driven mainly by goodie bags and discounts. If you read the whole thread, you'll find that not one of the curious have mentioned the words goodies or discounts.
When I consider joining a club or affiliation, I want to know whether its activities and ethos match my own interests, otherwise there's no point in joining for me. I've twice asked what the club does (I mean for real, not what's written on the website somewhere) and am still hoping to be enlightened. The last things I want out of a club are goodie bags, discounts and such 'benefits'.
OK, let me take this one. First and foremost, this is an enthusiast car club, so naturally, our activities have centred along getting to know our cars and BMW better. This is achieved in two ways, firstly we learn from each other, secondly from experts. Whilst the forum serves the first method quite well (but not fully), the second means is best undertaken as a body of enthusiasts i.e. when we go to BMW Malaysia and ask to see first hand how our cars are assembled in Malaysia, they won't entertain us if we go as individuals or even as a rag tag of buddies who happen to own BMWs. However, as an established and respectable car club, we managed to achieve this for members. Todate, not only have we visited the AMI plant in Shah Alam and been given a thorough tour with the right experts to answer all the questions we want but we have also been given a comprehensive tour by AB, SA and Ingress of their facilities. There is so much more that can be done, I'm sure you agree. There is already an open invitation to visit the new BMW assembly plant in Kulim!
Likewise with our monthly drives. The one going to Penang will involve about 30 cars plowing through the congested streets of Penang island. We need police escorts and this has again been facilitated by our legal existence as a registered society, backed by a huge multinational corporate interest.
For Mini Bimmerfest 2008, there will be participation from BMW Malaysia, their principals, 3 auto-related MNCs and other local corporates, all of which could only be secured under the umbrella of a successful car club like ours, with the right track record and memberships. The latter is important because I don't need to explain how important it is to negotiate on an even keel and from a position of strength.
The Committee was gracious enough to open the Sapura Car Clinic and Auto Detailing Clinic by Meguiars to the general forum population. As much as we can accommodate this, we will do so. However, these events were again only possible because it was organised by or with the support of BMW Club Malaysia, tacit or otherwise. Since our membership has grown to a new level, we can no longer be blamed for restricting these activities to official members, surely! However, some forumers had taken exception to that and hence the sporadic spats that has been going on.
The list goes on and on. Ah, track days! Whilst we have not mustered enough strength to book the entire Sepang track for ourselves, we have managed to do it in conjunction with other car clubs. The former can materialise soon as the club grows but would HCOC or IA invite us to share an entire track day if we are not of equal standing with them, with principles and governance that we have put in place as a registered car club?
Charity - Yes, everyone can do that and should! But this is often self-funded from our own pockets, how far does that go? As a recognised car club, we can facilitate contribution from our sponsor, technical partners etc. I recall how we were called on to support the White Ribbon campaign, AWAM approached us on the basis we were a recognisable car club, the other partner Harley Davidson of Malaysia and Singapore!
I hope I have justified the need for a car club like ours with these few examples, as far as motoring activities are concerned.
There is one aspect of the car club that has taken a life of its own and that is interaction between members. We cannot ignore it because it is only natural with shared interests, friendships are built and the Club should foster this simbiosm (if there's such a word, hahaha!). Several social events are now organised recurringly from weekly TTs, HHs and whatever to Annual Dinner, Grand TTs etc. However, not all can afford or justify the cost of a gala dinner without support. Here, the club goes out of its way again to solicit sponsorships, lucky draw prizes to make things exciting and the cost for each member is subsidised. Last year, I paid RM50 for a sumptious dinner at Hard Rock Cafe which was 50% subsidised and walked out with a superb quality BMW golf putter worth more than RM300. The first lucky draw prize was worth in excess of RM7,000. Two years back, the first prize was a weekend use of a 645i accompanied by 2 nights stay at Pangkor Laut (courtesy of BMW Malaysia - but surely owes something to our recognition by International Council of BMW Clubs in Munich!). The winner probably got laid in the process and well, that can be priceless, hehhehehehe!
Jokes aside, that's not what this is all about at the end of the day! The interaction and bonding is! Are you aware, there are members who have gotten to know each other from the Club and got married? Members in business or networking to find solutions to business problems? Members who rescued other members when no one else could help?! You can argue that this can happen without the club in existence but consider the big picture here and you must realise at the end of the day, the club's existence has played a role, even on this forum!
The truth is this online forum cost $$$ paid by the club which in turn derives its revenue from fees, some parts of it, others 100% for club and members' activities. The only thing FREE here is each committee's members' efforts, sweat, tears and blood!
Please don't misread me as I hope I haven't sounded adversarial. I and my collegues in the committee do it out of passion and sometimes passion has a way of speaking. If what I have said appeals to you, then you're welcomed to join us. If being an occasional forumer fits your bill in life, then it's ok, we understand and it's your pre-orgative. I won't make any judgments but perhaps spare a thought for those who have made all this including this online forum possible, the members. After all, we are simbiotic, that I acknowledge.
Hope I have answered your question. If not, or if you have further queries, please ask here and I will try my best to respond. Perhaps, queries of a more specific nature can be asked? Thanks for reading!
