Mind telling us why you don't like Syntium or Helix?

Syntium gives the sand paper effect. Engine very rough and noisy. I hated it since day one.

Helix makes the engine feel heavy. I didn't notice the fuel consumption.

This is what I have to say about Castrol:
0W-30 is my favourite. Very silky and engine runs very quietly although having an SJ rating. The only snag is that I had to top up frequently.

5w-40 is smooth but not silky. Engine still quiet. No evaporation loss after 14,000km. Engine oil doesn't turn dark after 14,000km. The best balance between protection and performance.

0W-40. I haven't tried yet but looking forward to it.

Fair enough bro, if it's based on your value perceptions. If you had said because of the brands, I would have started another debate. :D

also, Mr President, would you kindly pass our 'headache' discussion to En Shukor why the 0W30 SLX Professional Powerflow which doesnt carry BMW LL...? Is it the better oil than the 0w40?

I have sent him an email asking on his availability to conduct another oil talk for the club's official members. Then all these questions can be thrown at him.

Cheers

That engine oil is actually Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow BMWLL04 5W-30. It also comes with BMW LL04 0W-30 version. Unfortunately, both version are not available locally.

This Castrol Professional Powerflow has been specifically co-engineered with BMW to precisely meet the needs of a BMW engine, so it's not a coincidence that the engine performs to its full potential. It won't surprise you that BMW only recommends Castrol and that Castrol has been appointed as a first fill supplier.

The LL03 version:

Now, who say sludge is not cause by oil? read on..

Oil sludge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oil sludge or black sludge is a solid or gel in motor oil caused by the oil gelling or solidifying, usually at temperatures lower than 100 degrees Celsius. Sludge can be a major contributor to Internal combustion engine problems, and can require the engine to be replaced, if the damage is severe. Sludge is usually caused by the presence of water in the oil, and can accumulate with use. Ways to minimize sludge production and accumulation includes performing frequent oil changes, using synthetic oil and following the manufacturer's engine maintenance routine.

So, sludge is cause by water.. !! is anxious reading this?! :p

Might explain some of the bad oil sludge issues we have been hearing from folks with E90's here in Malaysia. Humidity is high, and maybe the wet wet weather is not good for the oil in our engines. If so how come only effects BMWs more than other engines? Either that is that our fuel is mixed with water or something at stations which has leaky fuel tanks. I've known of a few folks who have had to overhaul their relatively low mileage N52's due to oil sludge or oil dissapearing issues and some of us were speculating how come it happens to only some and not others. Anyway food for thought..

alamak, i am having extremely low mileage on my 3 yr 325i.

if open up the oil cap can we see the sludge from the top?

I think quite hard le. Best indication is during the oil drain to see whether the oil flows like water down or are globs of black goo. Also the oil filter should have a good indication of how bad sludge build up is. For bad cases BMW Malaysia uses something called a scope machine to peer into the engine before recommending what to do next to the affected engine.

I've recently done my precautionary oil change at 6+k kms at Ingress instead of 10ks. Each time ~RM600-700. So much for being environmentally friendly.. sigh.

Yup thats the oil bro :top: ... but you have to check the seller's credibility before buying it from ebay (checked and it's 100% positive feedback. Not sure about customs tho. I smell a group buy :D

More info on the elixir motor oil, Castrol syntec or GC 0W-30 for our BMW's :D
