Hi Friends,Im driving E46 lifestyle 318 version. My engine oil level is below expectation, and would like to add 1-2 little. My last service in AutoBavaria was use Shell Helix Ultra longlife-01. Between, what oil is that? I saw there is many types like 15 50, 5 40.... which one should i use. Any oil recommendation? Thanks and regards,

Just go with the recommendation.
But 1 to 2 Littre is ALOT.... you need to double check.
I believe, the most you should top-up is 1L.

I saw the stick and the oil level is very very low (i think lvl around 3-5mm only). 1L enough? Thanks for ur reply.

The oil should between to 2 marks.
If at lowest mark, it should need, the most, 1L.
Try to add 500ml first, then double check the stick again.

And remember, after adding the oil
- start the car, run for like 2-3 minutes
- shut it off, let it sit for 10 minutes at FLAT surface
- then check the dipstick for oil level.

It takes time for oil to flow into oil pan :)
Cheers

as what turbology mention, adding 1-2 litre is alot, even for my personal opinion, adding 1 litre is already alot, lets say after u add 1 litre and the dipstick reach center mark (just nice, ngam-ngam), when will the oil drop again until u need to topup another 1 litre? (after 1000KM? after 5000KM?) u have to monitor this. my car 10,000KM also no need topup and oil level still maintain the same in 6 month and my car is already 8 years old with 132,000KM on the clock.

wow....i think it is quite frustrating to have bought a car and got troubled with its maintenance.. instead of enjoying the drive of a UDM....

It's no big deal to put a bit of extra care for your UDM, I always check oil and water level on weekly basis. But if it needs topping up too frequent it might be due to some leaking gasket or look worst case might be piston ring not working properly (hence burnt in your combustion chamber). Try to get it to your w/shop and jack it up, sometimes any leakages might only be visible from underneath, for example between your torque converter and the engine (I do have that currently but very minimum).

hi there nana.........

I am also facing the same problem........ engine oil is burning 1500 km i need to top up 1 liter...... we have to sort this out ......... pm me... we can discuss further .........

The oil burning issue on the E46 is mostly centered around the Valvetronic 4-cylinder engines. These engines are also prone to oil sludge formation if the service intervals are streached to the max. U dont get these issues on the 6 cylinder engines cause the design concepts are different.

since this has been discus so many times, then i just use back this thread to ask question, i drive a E46 04 lifestyle(N46B20), the last service is about 78k and now is 81k and the engine light is on to prompt you for engine oil top up. which i think is impossible, i m using Mobil One Fully Syn 4litre, and i never rev the car to Redzone, how many of you toping ur engine oil at 3k interval , is this consider normal for E46 i mean, would like to know those that is using the (N46B20) engine, are u guys doing the same. My normal cruise is puchong,(LDP) damansara, shah alam, pj area and sometimes maybe KL.

Beside that, if go on highway outstation(lets say from here to penang) , will the engine oil burn faster lets say cruised at about average around 110km-130km, on off maybe touching 160km and come down again along the whole journey.

If idling car will burn the engine oil as well? like sent wife to pasar, cannot find car park, just look for elsewhere and illegal park then wait inside the car for probally like 40 minutes. Or wait for ppl go tapao food for like 10 minutes, things like this, u know...sometimes 10-15 minutes wait , sometimes 30-40 minutes wait with car engine on of course.

Hope to get some feedback and answer on my question. Thank you
By the way i m at oversea now, ask here to find out the answer cos wife is currently driving my UDM and phone me engine light is on with yellow warning light.
