Hi,I got a headache problem on my e46 engine, I services my car on 02/04/2008 and the mechanic fill up 4.5L Mobil 1 5W-50 engine oil for my engine. Until now, I already top up the engine oil for another 4L for 3 to 4 times whenever engine light on (yellow color) after I shut off engine.I need help and advise on this matter.

which engine u r using now? if u check ur cover ( underneath the engine ) ..can u c any oil on that?

Maybe got leaking somewhere....mine last time was the Valve cover gasket. Try see if got small amount of smoke come out from engine bay. try smell if got smell of plastic burning..because if got leaking..the oil will burn by your exhaust pipe or any hot metal.

did u notice engine oil on your floor?

Could be the engine oil level sensor which is known to fail. Did you chk the oil level on the dip stick before topping up?

hi E46 mates,

I did check the dip stick b4 topping the engine oil. The oil level is below min level of dip stick, so I topping up till approx. max level of the dipstick. But the practice still on going for the time being. I have to send my car for thoroughly check on engine leaking first b4any action taken espeacially overhaul engine. :)

I've been topping up my oil too on my m54b25. But i've got a known leak, from the flywheel oil seal.

but is it normal for a 1 Litre top up for say every 2-3k kms.

i've got that orange oil sign lighting up everytime i start the car, even after i top up oil. It lites up for a while after all the check lites go off and then goes off. Only at start up.

Someone did mention that its an inspection warning???

cheers :smokin:

Use less weight.
5w-50 viscosity is too high
You are wasting fuel

Use a higher "flash point" engine oil. It might ease your issue
And start looking for a new mechanic, and stop going back there.

Any recommended oil and brand? Pls advise. why can't try Auto-Rx? :listen:

Ah! Engine oil topic! While at the GTT on Saturday, I went to the Castrol booth and speak to a mid-age Malay chap representing Castrol. I ask him what should my E90 use that comes in 4 litre pack that I can buy from outside.

He said nothing suitable. Their 5W-40 is BMW LL-98 and according to him, its not suitable for Valvetronic/VANOS model. Unless we buy their drum which is available in 0w-30 but its ridiculous for us private car owner to buy the drum la.. :(

So I really dunno what Castrol is doing when most of the BMW models on the road is already having "valvetronics".. ???

I had difficult time explaining to him what car I'm using, he say the N52 makan minyak and need to top up. I say mine no need because I using N46. Then he say mine is old car.. I say no, its E90, then he say its 46, one model behind. I say its E90, running N46 engine.... he say that's why not consuming engine oil because old model. I say NOT OLD MODEL!!!! .... I gave up and say thank you for your time!! Thirsty after that.. :stupid:

Guys, I hope the following info will be helpful in determining if your engine is indeed ok. ( reprinted from BMW tech service doc for ref). See the last page on BMW AG's definition of acceptable max oil consumption.
