Hello my fellow UDM friends.I need some help and advice here. The amber engine oil light has been showing up again for the past two days while running on my BMW E46 318i.I don't see any leaks on the floor.I had the same issue about 2 months back and then I sent it for service about 1 month ago and the below items were changed / replaced:-vacuum pump-replace rear cover plate of cyclinder head-remove & install / sealing G or replacing oil pan-gasket-O-ring-HEX Bolt (M8x28.5)-gasket ring-and currently using Shell Helix Ultra 5W30I have not checked the engine oil level yet (will be checking it before I start the engine tomorrow). One more thing is when I took it to AB, those guys told me that the shaft seal and the fly-wheel needs to changed as well (will this cause the engine oil to drop?)Sifu's, can you please shed some light on this. Please advice.Thank you.

monitor the exhaust while driving for any white smoke from time to time...mine had it and it threw an engine check light...changed the oil separator and it runs fine now.

Was quoted RM150 for it at BOMIN though.

hope this helps.

Iceduke ,

Yes. I do see some white smoke sometimes from the exhaust and it will not be for too long. (like Denone biscuit - now u see, now u don't)... :)

Other than the oil separator, anything else could cause the light to show up?

I have not changed the oil separator yet.

Try to ask your mechanic check the oil pressure sensor/sender.

I had the same issue about 2 months back and then I sent it for service about 1 month ago and the below items were changed / replaced:

-vacuum pump
-replace rear cover plate of cyclinder head
-remove & install / sealing G or replacing oil pan
-gasket
-O-ring
-HEX Bolt (M8x28.5)
-gasket ring
-and currently using Shell Helix Ultra 5W30

I have not checked the engine oil level yet (will be checking it before I start the engine tomorrow).

One more thing is when I took it to AB, those guys told me that the shaft seal and the fly-wheel needs to changed as well (will this cause the engine oil to drop?)

Yup. U have to change the wear and tear parts which is the crankshaft oil seal and the flywheel oil seal. The labor is much expensive due to dismantling of your gearbox in order to install the new seals. By the way, what year is your car?. Try use the thicker oil instead of 5W30. Try 10W40. Good luck!

Alex5522 - thank you bro. I will have the oil pressure sensor/sender checked. Any idea how much it will cost if this needs to be changed?

Bro Ibrahim - it is year 2004. AB quoted me about 35k to dismantle the gear box and replace the flywheel and the oil seal.

I will need to check on the crankshaft oil seal as well. but this time will not be taking to AB.... :) warranty sudah tak ade. hihihi...

Anyone knows a reputable BMW mechanic in Johore Bahru?

Hello Veera,

Welcome to the board.

Your car is an auto or manual? If auto then ask them whats wrong with the flywheel? On auto the flywheel is mostly a piece of metal
