That's bad.. should have stain somewhere, get a foreman to check your u.

1. Radiator
2. Water pump
3. Thermostat
4. Hoses, seals and connectors
5. Expansion tank

If don't notice from the front, hoist up the car and check the back of the engine.

item 1 n 3 change already, item 2 checked n no problem, item 5 also in no problem....the water problem got worse last September, before that have to change like only once a month..the mech in penang do some pressure test n since then the water problem has gone worse..the mech say water coming out from some where around the head (maybe gasket)...that why i think my water prob maybe related to oil lost also...my assumption is that the gasket already give way to the oil n water...just my opinion...so now need advise from sifus here whether i need or not do top overhaul??(some more note: the water only come out when the engine start)

wah bro... 750ml per week quite serious lah ... how is your car so far?

btw... how does the mech know water coming out from around the head?

Anyway, FYI, sometimes even though head gasket leaking, it doesn't show water mixing with oil and vice versa. It all depends on where the crack is. If the head gasket cracks in between cylinders, usually u will notice that water level keep on dropping but no sign of water mixing with engine oil. In this case, usually it is accompanied with a case of misfiring.

But if an overhaul is really needed, then all the best. Keep us updated bro.

change all the hoses and the plastic parts as per the diagram shown by AB (the m43 engine).... your car is already old and the plastic has turned brittle....

Water loss and oil loss is separate case, hence don't mix the 2. No white smoke means piston rings and valve seals are all okay. If water goes into engine oil, your engine oil will turn color like teh tarik. If engine oil goes into coolant, you will notice oil stain in your coolant expansion tank. Have you check both?!

BMW uses a lot of plastic components in it's cooling system and vulnerable to leak due to breakage of these components. Make sure your premix 50/50 coolant with water for your top up because any such premix coolant leak will cause a white powdery trail, very easy to trace.

Normally I wouldn't be too bothered about head gasket leak until it gets "serious".

My m54b22 is consuming oil (1L/600 km)has got no white smoke except on cold startups, been through the ccv and valve seal job. Mechanic suspects its the piston rings. Decision to overhaul or transplant?

my assumption is the head gasket...need like half the big mineral water every week..i drove my car for work and commute just like 20km daily..i haven't gone to the mech yet due to financial deficit(hehe)...now just park my car and drove my wife car to work..kongsi with her...im also thinking of changing the whole engine due to lack of power(power lost) and many more problem..any prgoress well be updated here...if have any progress la..hehe

problem happen to me too. need top up water even after the plastic pipe changed. eventually found problem with water pump. can see some green coolant stain near the pipe and hose. Look like the water pump has some kind of pressure release valve, it spray the coolant and then the stain on the hose and pipe. At first I also did not know where the coolant gone because cannot find coolant on the floor.

Just done some service at Autobahn in Sunway...after jacking up the car notice water trace come out from the bottom of the radiator...the mech suggest to change mount plate ,pipe connector and the radiator it self (i wish i know how to upload picture)..decided to change only the mount plate and pipe connector and not the radiator because just changed last time in September...hope this will settle my problem once and for all.

As for the engine oil lost, the mech suggest me to change engine oil from 5w-40 to thicker 15w-40 due to ageing engine (12 year already maa..) ..was so happy that i did not have to do top overhaul..total lost for the service done was RM825 (inclusive oil change, filter, bearing and emblem)

The sad and frustrating part was that the radiator (Behr) have already leak although i've just changed it last September. The quality of the OEM is worst in my opinion, even cuntchill and proton part are more reliable. The same goes for the termostart (Behr also) ive change back in September..the part are expensive but the quality was so bad..hope BMW will take action on this matter...if they let this continue, for sure it will scar their reputation.

Been topping up engine oil every 3-4k of driving between regular service interval for the past 6 mths. Noticed that there were traces of white smoke and my parking bay floor is slowly stained (leakage of the engine oil i would assume). Each top up would require abt 2-3 litres. So today decided to top overhaul, change the water pump (yup it gave way already) and recheck any other necessary parts that needs to be changed as a precaution.

Inilah penyakit biasa untuk N42, anyway hope you could please share the cost involve later once your car is ok. Cheers

Dude,

Dont waste money. Its quite normal. White smoke due to condensation. However, if the white smoke is persistent, ie whenever you are driving, then you would have a bigger problem. Cheers!

I second that..

White smoke at early morning start ups are normal due to condensation and yes it shouldn't cause an alarm.
