im planning to buy the new f10 model n im in love with diesel torque. the only thing is, is it okay with malaysia euro2 diesel? anyone who owned the d from bmw, please help me give a feedback about your d car. im afraid it will have a problem after a few years. thank you :)

My F10 520d is a SKD model and had it for 2.5 years from new. Drives very well and now going to on close to 38k kms.So far no problems with the diesel engine or the bio diesel quality. I only use Petronas from day one. You dont have to worry about the car for at least 2 years as it is warranted. My other ride is also a high torque diesel and I have no problems with it.

Good luck and go with what your heart desires.

Despite some may complain about our diesel quality (high sulphur etc), alot of the D owners (530d, 520d, 320d) have not faced any issue with the engine so far (even with piggybacks installed!). Some have clocked over 200k kms without any issue. So, go ahead and enjoy the torque & excellent fuel consumption.

I'm driving the 320d for about 6 months now, no issues with the diesel so far. Except maybe you get weird glances when you're driving nearby a crowd that is curious why is a BMW sounding like a truck.

Not sure if it's psychological but I feel Petronas and Shell gives rougher idle/louder clatter compared to BHP.

Yes you are right on that. Lately both JoonSuan and I have swapped over to BHP diesel and it is really quieter and it feels smoother.

okay thank you everybody.. but im confuse whether to get the 520i or the 520d? im thinking about the maintainance after 2 years n also im not sure which one is more power.

i never use diesel car before, just afraid the sound n steering vibration would be irritating for me because i like quiet car.. i think i need to test drive both before consider it to buy. now im using 320i sport 2009.

If you really want a quiet ride, go for the 520i. The diesel engine will eventually get to you.

Test drive both then decide from there. Some say the torque and FC benefits of the 520d alone is enough to justify the jump to diesel.

Yeahhh i think the torque would impress me, when going uphill, which one is more easier dieser or petrol?

Yes the torque does sound very nice but if you are as picky as I am, right now, I am really tired of the diesel engine drone and the vibration :(

is it really obvious? :O or only on cold start in the morning? so far u satisfy with ur diesel car or regret it? hehe :D

After a while you dont notice the sound. At cruising speed of 110-160kmh, its pretty quiet. On the E90 i notice some vibrations to the steering and seats but on the F10, I cant feel it. Most likely due to better NVH.

The diesel clatter is only noticeable from inside at low speed for instance looking for parking, traffic jam and generally speeds below 40kmh. Other than that, when you drive at speeds above that, you hardly know you're in a 20d.

Personally, I think 20d cars are more relevant in mix of city/highway driving. The torque comes in handy when you need that sudden the acceleration to overtake someone or hill climb. Of coz if you do highway all the time, the 20i is a great car to hit high revs when you need that top speed. But a BMW purist would tell you that you enjoy highway speeding only in straight 6 engines. That is not to say straight 4 pot isn't great but the refinement is not as good as a straight 6.

Above all, test the car before you make a decision. I made 3 test drives within 2 weeks before I made up my mind on the 320d. But the first test drive made a lasting impression as the sales guy kept insisting that I floor it on an uphill section and there was this sweet long stretch which was enough to hooked me. The 3rd drive, my wife tested it too, and then she insisted to get that car although I was still thinking if I could afford it or not.

And yeah, till today my parents still goad me about driving a truck. I tell you it's a stigma when you're driving diesel cars. People associate it with trucks or old bus without wanting to know the benefits of Diesel engines.

In true honesty, I definitely regretted getting the diesel, because of the heavy steering on the E90, the diesel clatter, the rough engine feel and the lack of power at higher RPM. If I were to turn back time, I would have gone for the 335i instead.

yeap i want the f10, im using e90 petrol now. so it would be okay la if i choose 520d rather than 520i? because i always travel for a long distance every week n need an efficient car n also quiet at high speed cruising.. so u said that the car is quiet at speed above 100, i think im going to buy the d model :D thx btw

oh yaa e90 steering is very heavy. im using it now but im planning to change to 5er f10, i think it will be quieter than 3 series diesel model. my budget is either 520d or 520i :D 335i is a good car!! test drove it beforeee, nice inline 6 twin turbo from bmw
