I tested the GTI shortly after gettimg my 320d-didn't like the skinny steering-didn't feel the "kick"-felt so much like a student's car-college boy's car. My 2 cents. Of course, I didn't hammer it down MEX-maybe then I would have seen its true colours.

agree with you doc.. it's a boy's car. bmw's are driven by men. no way can boys keep up with men on roads such as janda baik. even grandmothers can drive fast on straight roads. i digress? well, sorry la...

that would be a drag i would love to see :4:

on paper T2 is correct, the power to weight of the GTI (207hp, 280Nm, 1414kg) gives it an edge over the standard 320d (184hp, 380Nm, 1520kg).
it's a lot closer when you power and torque up the 320d to 204hp, 420Nm...! the bimmer's RWD gives it a little bit of extra grunt too
...wonder what the result might be? so when's this event again?

i remember whacking the GTI and over taking one at 220km/h....it was no match for my old e30...hehehe
presumely it was a standard GTI without any upgrades...

only car that i was scared was the 530d...never provoke them, you be smelling their smoke...

So what is it that you wanna know about the Golf GTi.

Me and my E90325i were blown away by a Mk5 in medium traffic on the NSE. So I went out and bought my son (and me) one.

Top speed both are limited (and tested) to 250. But I must say I feel more confident at high speed in the E90. It is more stable.

In traffic and the twisties, the GTi will beat my 325 or a 320D. It is very agile and the response is instant.

I will give high marks to the 325 for comfort and high speed cruising.

But I will give top marks on the GTi for handling and agility.

think overkill and torque converter will kaput in no time.

Powerkit doesn't even include a torque converter, Herb. Hope they can get the price down, first thing first. Any of you got a better quotation than MR8500 labour not included yet for the 320d Powerkit?

i think so it all boils down to the driver, hence the GTI is front wheel drive and the BMW rear driven...some more the GTI is a smaller car..
i remember cleary a drive to kuala kelawang via hulu langat.. 1 e36M3, 1 e46M3, 1 e30USM3 and one soup up GTI, the e30 gave up, both the M's and GTI had neck to head runs... somemore driven by a grandad of 65years old...opps, forgot about the blue 335i also....

end of the day, it boils down to whose ... is bigger. honestly I don't see any reason why anyone should risk their arms & legs for a few seconds of thrill.

Perhaps everyone should take a look at this post by Jerman and take some time to ponder what you have seen.

Exactly Herbert...suddenly not very excited about the Powerkit anymore.

Just got a Mk6 3 months ago for my wife. Superb car. Value for money. The DSG gerabox is quick. So far, I managed to tapau e90 320i for breakfast, 325i for brunch, e46 330i for lunch and e60 525i for dinner.

never really tested GTI MK5 but only R32 (friend's friend one) last year! Unbelieveable power with good acceleration & pickup... reached 180km/h in no time and good thing is that the car maintained its grip on the road and still felt stable! Heart was itchy there and then :top:

btw, just curious, does the MK6 have better performance vs the MK5?
enginewise, mk6 has extra 10hp, same torque.

new mk5 owner has spoken, i never knew gti handles better than e90 325. my dad said gti handling is nothing special. perhaps due to the fact that we have many "lotus" in the house :D
and yes after driving the gti for more than 3 hrs i've always felt tired. would love to try a long distance cruise on a 325e90
how's your gti doin? still stock? i'd say more than 30% of the mk5 out there is remapped. there is so much potential from the turbo.
i never reach 250 before, only 235-240 :D mind you the speedometer over reads.

I'm not a new Mk5 owner. It is still stock and it is with my son. Bcos of the hard ride, I much prefer my E90 as my daily driver. I will occassionaly borrow the GTi from him for a bit of weekend fun.

Please dont compare any car with the handling of the Elise, it can keep up with a Ferrari on the track. Alas, I cant get into one. I cant say much for the earlier Lotuses. With exception of a few gems, the other Lotuses are duds. i spent some time in them.

But we are talKing about the Golf GTi here, aren't we.
