need advice here...my e46 2004 is giving me headache lately... every 3 weeks have to top up engine oil..went to mechanics and was told there is no leakage noted..not a single trace of oil in my garage either ..any suggestion ..tq

How do you know you need to top up in the first place if there's no visual evidence? Did the indicator light up?

chk ur exhaust if any white smoke came out, especially when engine cold. ur like me b4...

i think this is a common problem in e46 (N42) ... mine also the same problem... suggested by the mech... go for top overhaul...

Yeah N42 i guess... my M52TUB also havent have this problem ... *Touch Wood*

the aladdin light turn yellow intermittently at the beginning before it became persistent...no white smoke from the exhaust either..my mechanics did suggest overhaul..

how much money do i have to korek from my tabung to do overhaul.. any ideas

Try thicker oil, use Semi -syn 10w40, sometimes old engine burnt off thin oil faster.

Mechanics being mechanics and they will always want to overhaul the engine, more $$$ for them. Since no white smoke from the exhaust, that indicates lubricant is not leaking into cylinders. What lubricant are you using now, 0w30 or what? Try using a thicker oil like what EL118 said......10w40 or 10w60.

Any issue changing to a thicker oil?i guess this is a common problem with N42. Does N46 face the same issue?

yeah....i m having the same problem....what is the cost for top overhaul? tq

No issues using thicker oil. In fact, engines of 5 years above shouldn't be using 0w/30.

What if white smoke come out ??

White smoke indicates that lubricant oil is sipping into engine cylinders. This is usually cause by worn out piston rings. During combustion stroke, lubricant is burnt together with the fuel inside the cylinders causing white smoke emitted from exhaust.

Under such circumstances, a top overhaul is recommended.

dunno what happen after 8k. coz i change my oil every 8k. haha

You are using semi or full synth? normally after 8k for rempit kakis, need a bit (half litre) of top up.

Thanks herbert for the explaination. When i heard of overhaul, my cold sweat come as it sound expensive. What is the indicate average cost of overhaul ? my car engine is M54B22.

Any recommended place? it would be great if you could PM me some recommended place as i will be in KL this friday till monday.

mine, there is already sign of smoke emitted from exhaust....mind telling me roughly, what is the cost for top overhaul?
