Paddle shift did not work last week whilst driving to Ipoh.
Went to do a modic and fault registered was steering column. Could not even erase the fault.
Since the dealer gave me a 1 year warranty, he asked me to go to a specialist who pressed a few buttons on the steering wheel and suddenly it worked. According to him there are occassions where the wires sometimes touch thus causing the malfunction.
Modic also showed fault on the lights but was told that this is because HID lights was installed.
Other than that, my usual workshop told me that everything on the car is OK and I do not need to spend any money to change parts right now.
Getting used to the SMG now - learning how to balance it on a slope and can do it most times now.

can u tell me where did u go to repaire the paddle malfunction....coz i have problem with my shifter too...
The paddle can perform up shifting but the down shifting is not at function...
please help....anyone?

M Power in Ipoh. But as I said, he did not even open it up. Just turned the steering wheel left and right and randomly pressed all the buttons and it suddenly worked again.
It still worked until today ...

Now is the SSG/SMG1 common problem.

SMG gearbox computer box attached at the gearbox itself. (design failure by the stupid Italian gearbox designer, computer box for gearbox in an M3 SMG which is by siemens is located the engine bay and covered) If you stuck in the jam during hot weather for quite sometime, the computer box cannot give proper input to the gearbox. Meaning you car cannot move even to press the fuel.

The solution is to open the under carriage engine cover to give more air circulation at the gearbox area. Or put your ceiling fan near the computer box:stupid:

Was stuck in a jam for an hour just now ( it is raining in KL ) and the gearbox went all funny - from standstill, I can still shift between 1st and 2nd but when I press the accelerator, the car does not respond until the rpm is about 2.5k then it started moving slowly. After a while, the car can barely move and it felt very jerky and when I press the accelerator, you can hear the gear changing very loudly but the car is hardly moving. I turned the engine off for 2 mins and it was normal again. Then after another 5 mins of driving, it happened again.
Finally got home.
Is this the symtom of what you describe as computer being too hot ?
If yes, then I will go and remove the cover as you mentioned.
If not, pengsan, got to go to Sapura on Monday am

u should go to the authorised dealer to have a check, they will let u know whts wrong with ur car. I think this must be clutch is slipping

The problem that you mentioned will come again if you stuck in heavy traffic. It's nothing to do with your clucth pad. Ask AB/Sapura to re-program your gearbox before change both items of above items.

The immediate solution that you can take is avoid heavy traffic road. and open the cover to give more air at the gearbox area.

I 2nd what Yellow mentioned.Get it reprogrammed.It looks certain like clucth slip as what you have mentioned.But the car really lags power when clucth slips..rev go up but car hardly moving according to rev.If it still bite when you drove it last nite,then perharps its not the clucth.

Reprogramming is far more cheaper than changing clucth or actuator or both.If it doesnt work..you have to do what Alan said..change the clutch.

Since you got your car not too long ago,talk to your dealer bout this and get them do something about the car.You never know,many dealers out there just wanna get rid of a car even though they know the car needs repair.

SMG or not it is purely luck even an Autobox cant guarantee you that it will last.

I dislike automatic (torque converter).
But the only cluth-system you can get in E46 and E90 , is a SMG.
We should call up AB and tell them "WE WANT CAR with REAL MANUAL".
Then we won't have SMG trouble.

I just ordered my clutch and actuator frm AB and its imported from Germany, takes about 1 week to get it...my clutch is giving me this problem in heavy traffic and if i switch off my ignition for about 15 minutes it will return to normal again.

Go to AB for advice about reprogramming or restrimming the program and they will jack up ur car see if weather the clutch is giving u problem or not..they will advise u on what u should do...

I still can drive my car but when in a traffic jam it drives me up the wall with all this problem coming up...so i finally decided to change the clutch and actuator and it takes me 3 months to make my final decision.

I have changed my gearbox + clucth pad + ECU... AB gave me 50% goodwill warranty + 2 years warranty on all the parts. Noticed that my new gearbox + ECU version is different part number and version with our old gearbox + ECU version. AB said it's improvise version done by the Italian..... .. My ride now is superb..:rock:

Thank YM. I was told that the gearbox and clutch plate was changed about a year ago ........
Anyway, will do the reprogramming as per your advise as soon as I can.

i went to Mspeed workshop just now...to get second opinion from ah meng in regards of my faulty paddle shifter...

he suggested to do software upgrade of the engine and the smg system. he quoted me rm 250 to do both..only then he can determine what is the cause of the malfunction downshifter.

he also mentioned the easiest way to identify the problem is to swap smg steering...if it's working surely ..so is not cause by the steering..

yellowmellow did mention regarding the gerbox upgrade...do u think i should go to AB Sapura instead of Mspeed ?
Ah meng mentioned better to upgrade engine software as well... follow by gearbox upgrade. is this necessary?

I'm not an expert but that is odd advice. I would have thought that he can plug into the computer and it will tell you whether the steering column is an issue.
I don't see how engine and gearbox software can affect only one paddle shifter.
But he is also correct to say that you can swap steering wheel - problem is where to find one to swap for test purpose.
I going to reprogramme my gearbox tomorrow and remove the bottom engine cover. Hope it works .........
