Is there any function like SMGII where you pull the upshift pedal so the car is not rolling back when stop or moving up from hill? This function is called "Gradient Assistance" in the BMW manual. Hope it help.

No lah. After I spoke to you this pm tried but nothing happened.
But I find that using manual in first gear is a lot easier to control on a slope than using C1..

SMG / SSG is not really for ladies driver. Even with the Cruise Mode ( C Mode ) is quite diffcult for them to drive (including my wife).

It's fun car to drive and don't regret it. Maybe you have to get another ride then for your wife...... Which I did that.

She's taken my E36 !

I don't think so. If yes how to do it? What I mean how to activate the system?

I guess after so many people complain about driving from slopes, BMW came up with gradient assist function in SMG 11.

hi guys

i saw this tread in
http://www.m3.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/e46-smg-slides-5247.html?

but hasn't tried it yet...wonder if it works on SMG1

there is a gradient assistance program in the SMG computer, auto and manula modes, activate as follows:
- when still, footbrake on.
- pull left shift paddle for half a second
- the engine speed will increase, which tells you that the system has activated
- release the footbrake and drive away, however you have to do this within 2 seconds because the system switches off after 2 seconds

Guys,
I still can't drive the car properly when on a uphill slope !
Unlike the auto cars, the car rolls backwards as soon as I depress the brake.
For manual cars, I can use both feet on the brake and accelerator to moderate the car.
But for SMG, by the time I release the brake pedal to step on the accelerator, the car already started moving backward.
I tried using the handbrake but it is not much help.
How do I do this properly each and everytime ?
Embarassing when people see this and dangerous when a car is right behind me.
Thanks.

Hi Ozone,

I must say, your story is hilarious :)

Ive been driving SMG for 3+ years now. It does take some time to learn to shift smoothly. Initially it was okey, trick is to time your flick of the paddle/gearknob, and understand that it takes abt 1second for the the clutch to disengage and reengage the next gear..Ease off the accelerator a bit as well wen you shift, let the tranny shift, and then resume accelerating....know that shifting from 1st to 2nd is slower than 2nd to 3rd... so learn to time your finger and right foot. Once you get it...its really great...I shift smoothly, with passengers hardly noticing... Remember, SMG is really a clutchless manual.

For hill stops, the trick I use is to use my left foot on the brakes. But I only do this for short stops (in traffic) after the right foot has stopped the car..first i engage my right foot on the brake (as normally) to stop, then let the left foot take over from the right foot. When I want to move, I just accelerate normally with my right foot and ease off the left foot from the brakes. No sliding backwards......but caution...you need learn to ease your self into doing this as your left foot will certainly stab the brake paddle initially.

Good luck...Enjoy the car man...SMG will really let u maximse the 325's potential.

It sounds like a M3 SMGII to me.
Maybe most people are just use to the auto trans. Try depress the gas pedal faster (before the car is rolling back). That's why I seldom use gradient assist, worse to worse learn left foot brake like what racing driver always does :burnout:

Hi Seribuluh,

The mantainance of a 325 SMG and 325i is the same. Its just that when major things happen for eg( gearbox) ,the SMG will cost more.In fact,SMG is using a manual platform and wear and tear should be relatively easier to deal with compared to auto.It depends on what you prefer..are you the type of person who likes some excitement in your daily driving,r u most of the time in the highway...or you just need a car to go to the office and go back home?

C200k..gives me a chill.I have seen too many problematic kompressor at my friend (he is a mechanic) place and he personally told I would regret it if I were to get one.Heck even one of my friend's c200k also giving him many problems that he sold his and get an E90.I am sure you will reach a decision after you demo both cars,

Well...in the end of the day..luck plays a big role in buying a car.

So..Good luck
